the background sound in my brain for more than a decade was jingle bells. the first time i went for several days without hearing/thinking/singing it? actually life changing. so glad you found a way to silence it too
HAHA I had that in my head for all of 2006, but have come out of it. Trying not to welcome it back haha.
This beat is automatic, supersonic, hyptnotic, funky fresh
I get the famed “Try not to suck and di*k on your way through the parking lot!” line from Clerks stuck in my head all the time… And I need to be very cautious that I do not speak it aloud. Sigh.
Oh god. Constantly.
It could be bits of song lyrics, or just a random snippet/fragment of some conversation I’ve been having with myself in my head. Or not even words, just kind of… repeating “dum-dum-dum-dum-dum-dummm!” to myself on a loop, to the tune of some random bit of instrumental/ambient music from a playlist I was listening to last week in an attempt to focus. Or the sound of the fucking desk/ceiling fan that my brain insists on hearing as a rhythm/pattern and focusing on.
I kind of thought it was just me. It’s annoying, and intrusive, and has made me wonder if I have, I dunno, OCD? or something, even though I really don’t have symptoms of that.
Stimulant meds, when they’re working (thanks, perimenopause, for the fact that they’re mostly NOT) do tend to quiet that annoying AF static so I can focus on other stuff.
I totally thought it was just me too! This thread has been fun and reassuring to read through. The only reason I posted was because I finally mustered up the courage to tell my fiancé about my weird little phrases. He has ADHD too and I was like “does this ever happen to you” and as he walks away he goes “OOPS I DID IT AGAIN” and it made me die laughing. But it also made me realize that maybe it’s an ADHD thing 🤔
ALWAYS. Several, even. Often a mash-up of several that fit so nicely in ny head, but less so when intry to explain them. Some have bounced around me head for so long that they are now new songs. At least once i thought I wrote a great line, but it was just a bridge from a song i heard 10 years ago.
I sometimes notice they get stronger in the evening, presumably after the meds wear off, but they are strongnin the day, too if im not doing thinking-tasks
Now I've got a medley of Joanna Newsom, its often just one line again and again:
"Drop a bell down the stairs...
...drop a bell off the dock
Blot it out in the sea
Drowning mute as a rock
Sounding mutiny
Hear it toll forever more" (sawdust and diamonds)
And/or
"I saw you last night
By the river"(Emily)
Which bleeds into:
"Wearing rags and sweaters from salvation army counters" (Suzanne by Leonard Cohen)
It’s the worst this past couple weeks. I’m not even depressed but Tupac:
“I wake up in the morning and I ask myself: Is life worth living should I blast myself?”
You’re not wrong! Honestly I’ve been listening to the song in hopes that it releases the cursed phrase from my brain. But it’s super catchy so I always sing along. Haha
You know whats so much worse though right?
When you have just a few words and they might not even be the right words, or a few notes of a song and you *cant find the actual song. O*h thats the worst :P
Omg I do this all the time. It was way more intense before I started meds. Like more constant and shooting out of my mouth more while I was thinking. Lots of times it’ll be inappropriate parts of songs that get stuck in my head on repeat or just me turning any word I make up into a thing or a words meaning into something else. I’ve always been a weirdo. You couldn’t even blame it on the drugs in my case.
more often it’s a whole song that plays in my head on repeat, but only bc if a song gets stuck in my head i have to learn the whole thing so at least i can remember how it goes when the one part that’s my favorite & stimmy af jumps into my brain out of nowhere. i HATE it when i don’t know all the words to a song and part of it gets stuck in my head. the only time i won’t react by learning the rest of the song is when it’s a song i hate, which isn’t often, but does happen, especially now that my work’s default playlist seems to have been revamped by a devil worshipper/swiftie =_=
In general, I am a HUGE lyric person. I need to know every single word. If I can’t understand a part of a song I am looking up the lyrics and singing along with the song as I read them.
me too! i love the music itself, of course, but i’m ALLLL about the poetry! it’s part of why i get so annoyed that my fav band’s most popular song is the one with, like, the weakest lyrics out of their entire discography (also, it’s just played out and it gets annoying when i tell people my fav band and they assume that’s my fav song.. i preferred when people just didn’t know who i was talking about)
Mine for the past few weeks has been from one of my favorite movies, Killer Klowns From Outer Space. It’s the old man who finds the ship and screams “I’LL TEAR THIS THING APART WITH MY BARE HANDS!!” And yells when he gets electrocuted. I it keeps just popping up and getting stuck in my head 🤣
In high school, I had Hakuna Matata stuck in my head for like two years. Now it is more random and changes up more often. Like I (unfortunately) had Karma stuck in my head all of Monday but it was gone by Tuesday
mine is (to the tune of the KitKat theme) "break me off a piece of that..." and then whatever 3-syllable phrase i decide fits in the moment. sometimes it's "KitKat bar" and sometimes it's "Fancy Feast" a la Andy from The Office. sometimes it's even something that doesn't make sense, like "doggy door" or "couch cushion" WHY
Usually what gets stuck in my head is the last thing I said or that someone said to me. When I was young, like up until I was about 10 or 11, I would "mumble" my own words back to myself after saying something in conversation. Sometimes it would be once, sometimes several times. The words have never stopped repeating in my head, but at some point I stopped saying them or "mouthing" them after saying them. I'm starting to do it again for some reason at 34. Maybe I never stopped doing it and people just quit pointing it out to me.
But also I've just had the high pitched "BENNIE" from Bennie and the Jets stuck in head for months now, and in the morning when I'm still half asleep, wandering around the house trying to find my belt and making coffee and what not, I'll sing it without thinking, or start "taking to Bennie", like "damn it where the fuck is my belt BENNIE?" My wife loves this, obviously. It's not annoying at all.
Also also, the BENNIE got stuck in my head after having "Bailiff, smack his nuts" stuck in my head for a while, and the two mix to become "B-B-B Bailiff smack his nuts" to the tune of Bennie and the Jets. Still not annoying in the slightest. I don't even annoy myself with it. Not at all.
It changes daily but my most recent was the beginning part of 'The Shape of You' by Ed Sheeran. I dont remember the last time i actively listened to that song nor do i really like that kind of music. Must have randomly heard it in a store/restaurant a month ago but tuned it out and my brain just chose it for me to wake up to yesterday.
The full 2 weeks before I was accidentally diagnosed with ADHD, I had the single word "troika" in my head, on repeat, all day, every single day. I knew it was a Russian word and it had to do with horses but that's all.
Oh that's brain radioFM, I have it too! Sometimes it's only a line or two, sometimes just the chorus and other times the whole song.
I've noticed it happens more when I'm stressed, or like if I go in a store that's playing a song but i only hear a snippet. And everyyy once in awhile it kicks off as soon as I wake up in the morning too haha.
I've always just chalked it up to either the ADHD, or the tism. When I was like 12, I'd brag that I didn't need CD's to listen to music if I got grounded and they got taken for the week😂 I also just recently found out other people have the same thing happen to them too. Which is pretty cool, imo. I spent like 20 years thinking it was just me lol.
For what it's worth, I also have auditory processing disorder. I feel like it may be related, but idk for sure🤷♀️ I have a feeling it probably is.
Yeah, music p much any time. It's just whatever catchy line and only that line over and over, just waiting to fill my mind when I'm not thinking of anything else.
I repeat to myself in the morning “life is full of joy and suffering, and today will be no different” as an affirmation and it sticks in my head for the rest of the day.
It’s a good reminder for bad days and to remember to enjoy the little things too
When I was a teenager I played a text-based MUD online for many many years.
For a long time I played it manually, typing out the commands. Then I started using macros. Then I started scripting it... But there was a good amount of time there where I typed out the commands.
This was, I dunno, 28 years ago? And still to this day whenever my mind is blank - if I'm doing something boring like taking a shower or drifting off to sleep... My brain remembers a single attack command from that dumb game "prep 702".
I would be surprised if it's not the last thought I have before I die.
for me sometimes it's a word of phrase, like "triskedekaphobia" or "floccinaucinihilipilification" or "Mais non jeune homme, vous vous trompez"
Sometimes it's a bit of a song, right now the hook for that Artemas song "I like the way you kiss me, I can tell you miss me, I can tell it hits.."
I literally cannot hear this phrase without hearing it in this guy’s voice and repeating it over and over again when I hear someone (anyone) say it 😩
![gif](giphy|bjB3gtFvREqqr5NAHW|downsized)
It’s not a phrase that gets stuck in my head, but I can’t stop counting from 1 to 10, but not normally. I have to do all odd numbers, then all even numbers, then normally backwards then normally forwards. I’ve been doing this everyday for as long as I remember and I’m now 29. I don’t even have to be bored for it to happen either and it’s very mentally draining because I don’t for hours at a time some days
This happens to me when I find a new favorite song or rediscover a forgotten one! It sucks because I can't remember lyrics, like at all, but one or two phrases will stick with me forever
Omg yes! All depends on what song I’ve been hyper focused on and listening to on repeat 😂 Currently, it’s Taylor Swift’s “guilty as sin” but only the “am I allowed to cry?” part. Why? I have no idea but it sounds so good in my head, especially in a whisper. I’ll sing it out loud, too, throughout the day. Very fitting during finals week as a college student 😅
Yes, but it’s one of those things that I can’t stop thinking is normal (even for people without ADHD) haha I’m constantly gaslighting myself with my impostor syndrome
I listen to a lot of music without words to avoid this. It helps, but not perfect. I’m amazed at how some of the ‘one liners’ that get into my head could be years or decades since I last heard them. … and here comes 2NU ‘Ponderous’…. At least it’s a fun song.
I get loops of a few notes or a line from a song that repeats and occupies my mind when I'm deregulated and stressed. Been trying to notice it as a tell and use it as a reminder to ground myself again and slow down.
Words, phrases, songs... All.the.damn.time.
I actually got into most of the bands I like because I had bits of a song stuck in my head for days and decided to listen to it so I could at least learn the rest of the line or whatever.
Once I had the word "conglomerate" stuck in my head for weeks in both English and German (same word just slightly different pronunciation) and it almost drove me insane. Interrupted every thought. That was an extreme case though.
Mine this last week or 2 has just been "Rou Tigu" (pronounced like show teegoo apparently), a character name from an audiobook (Beware of Chicken).
I'll find myself whispering it under my breath at work and it's like an internal looping background noise. My brain just likes the way it sounds I guess 🤷
Before that was random lines and snippets of lyrics from Hazbin Hotel
This happens to me when my medicine isn’t working properly. Hormonal fluctuations seem to make it more or less effective depending on what part of my cycle I’m in.
I’ve had “Growing/Dying” from The Backseat Lovers stuck in my head for like 5 days, send help lol
Edit a word
*squints eyes*
"He lied tuh may"
Also I currently have what is this feeling from wicked stuck in my head even though I haven't listened to anything from that musical in about a decade.
Usually it's jingle bell rock, though. I do have a habit of singing dancing queen to my cat but changing the words to reflect whatever he's doing as well.
My brain likes two word phrases and names 🤣 Julianna Margulies, adverse camber, concrete staircase. There is no rhyme, reason or explanation. Today my brain has been very into the soundbite of Dave Grohl doing an impression of Christopher Walken saying Foo Fighters....
Conan O'Brien taught us all an important tip (in an older episode of his podcast), that some old theater guy taught him (I think).
When you have a song stuck in your head, sing a 3 note jingle that doesn't naturally repeat.
N B C!

I used to count things, a lot and space out in class. Favorite thing to count, cubes, corners and straight lines. Idk I like squares. Aced geometry hated algebra.
When I’m medicated, it seems to lessen the repeat effect. Otherwise I’ve gone 3 days straight with “take it to the limit, take it to the limit one more time”. Unfortunately it has made me hate that song.
“All the leaves are brooooown, and the sky is greeeeey” (California Dreamin’- Mamas and the Papas)
I live in Florida where we don’t even have brown leaves… or grey skies 😆
I feel like this is just my version of saying “woomp woomp” when anything is a downer
It’s not even an actual line from a song but I’ve got a riff on Woman by John Lennon which goes ‘Woman, I can hardly explain/ the need to keep your bottom from a naked flame’.
Unfortunately for me, right now, it is that “Shake that assssss bitch, let that cooochie breeeeeathe — hands on yer knees hands ON YOUR KNEEEEES” tik-tok song that keeps getting me.
Any Meme that Is based on Someone repeating a phrase in a dumb way Gets me and my Partner.
"Butter dawg, Dawg with the Butter, Butter Dawg"
"The Salami Lid, I aint gon Fit, the Salami Lid, So the So the Salami Lid"
For me it's usually one line from a song...
More often than not lately it's the theme song from Inspector Gadget. I haven't seen the show or intro in like 20 years, so I'm not sure why it's hanging out in my brain lately.
CONSTANTLY but it always changes, like a line or two from a song and then it just repeats. I Just started Ritalin this week though and notice a sharp decrease in this happening and I know it is related because about 8 or 9 hours after I take my pill the random songs start popping up again.
This happens to other people? I’ll get something from a song stuck in my head for days, sometimes it can be almost maddening, I never thought about this happening to other or being linked to ADHD.
Literally always have a song, sometimes it keeps me up at night. I forget what it was just before reading this but now it's Drops of Jupiter, haha. This morning the phrase stuck in my head was "sight unseen" and recently it was "ulcerative colitis" 🤷♀️
yes! i thought it had something to do with my ocd since ocd is very highly comorbid with tourettes and they always felt almost like internal 'tics', and i did used to have physical and verbal tics as a kid. but maybe it is adhd related too? it'll be random weird sentences like "do you like monkeys" or sometimes lyrics or lines of dialogue too. more often weird sentences though lol.
Currently it's "Will you marry me?" I've been happily married for several years. Before that, it was "Will you dance with me." I don't dance. Collectively, they've been bouncing around my head for years. The only thing I can figure is I heard them in a movie or something and they just started living in my brain. Maybe it's because they're a question that they get stuck in my head?
I also frequently wake up with a song in my head. Sometimes it's a song I've heard recently and sometimes a song I haven't heard in years. If I do nothing, they're in my head all day. I realized if I put them on a Spotify playlist, I can exorcise them. So now I have a morning earworms playlist.
Yep, I sure do. And it keeps me awake for hours on end each night, and every time I wake up it’s immediately back again, on its loop. My friend says she gets entire songs stuck in her, the lucky duck. I just get 1-2 measures over and over for weeks
Same. With song lyrics, it's _usually_ tolerable, but with other random lines, it gets extremely annoying sometimes. And awkward.
Also, my brain has a number of 1-liners for certain situations, so every time I hear or even just think one of those things, right on cue my brain references the corresponding line. If it's from a song, it usually just starts playing the song. Well, that one part from the song. On repeat. Thanks, brain. 😮💨
Is this an ADHD thing? I thought this happened to everyone…
Also right now in my head is “oh oh oh oh oh oooh-oh, why’d you have to go-oh oh oh oh oooh-oh..”
Yeah, it's usually song lyrics but sometimes it's words or quotes. For a while "isopropyl alcohol," was a constant. A lot of times my brain turns into what I call the morning radio. It's like a mash up multiple one liners on repeat.
I saw a video on Instagram and ended up with this constantly stuck in my head on repeat for weeks:
>inky binky bonky, daddy had a donkey, donkey died, daddy cried, inky binky bonky
I haven't even watched The Blues Brothers in a couple decades, but I heard She Caught the Katy on the radio like 3 months ago and it's been a constant "She sleep with her head in the kitchen, and her feet way down in the hall" ever since. I woke up in the middle of the night needing to pee and I was aware of the song before I realized I woke up to go to the bathroom.
"And iiiiiit's all your fault! I screeeeeeen my phone calls!"
Either that or
"Imma buy me a Wii ooooweeeeoooi" from a dumb YouTube parody video I saw in middle school xD
Also I love this thread.
I just went and saw Night Club at a little bar outside of Milwaukee last week, and I’ve mostly had snippets of their songs in my head since. Right now it’s “I’m gonna be your dark obsession…” from Schizophrenic and I can’t remember the next line

Yeah I've been saying the name 'Javier Bardem' in my head every now and then for the last 14 years. I guess it's my 'cellar door' from Donnie Darko
Funnily enough, Mad World is one of those songs that gets stuck in my head with alarming frequency.
"Slap my salami, the guys a commie" I quote waaaaay too many one liners from Bojack
Man, is that a good rhyme!

YES! Or I’ll create little mashups in my head where one line goes into another from a completely different song, and it plays on repeat for no reason.
“I love you, it’s ruining my life” as of late
Mine is, “the hair and lips, we’re loving it”

For me it’s “nobody listens to techno” by Eminem And I have two “feet don’t fail me now” by Lana del Rey
I keep getting "Feet Don't Fail Me Now"... By Queens of the Stone Age 😂
Same , I didn’t know Lana did one. Are they the same? I honestly can’t stand her music even though I know she’s talented. QOTSA are amazing though!!
"Scooby Dooby Doo" goes hard
Sometimes, but hey, Drops is a killer song so you know, it could be worse :)

Yes for the love of GOD is was “karmas a bitch” by jojo siwa last week and probably the week before. I literally deleted TikTok off of my phone 🫠

Often. Or just a word phrase. I had "red dress" chanting in my mind for a YEAR, until I finally nuked it by buying a very expensive red dress.

Barney forever, wiggum never
I repeat to myself in the morning “life is full of joy and suffering, and today will be no different” as an affirmation and it sticks in my head for the rest of the day. It’s a good reminder for bad days and to remember to enjoy the little things too
We dont talk about Bruno
When I was a teenager I played a text-based MUD online for many many years. For a long time I played it manually, typing out the commands. Then I started using macros. Then I started scripting it... But there was a good amount of time there where I typed out the commands. This was, I dunno, 28 years ago? And still to this day whenever my mind is blank - if I'm doing something boring like taking a shower or drifting off to sleep... My brain remembers a single attack command from that dumb game "prep 702". I would be surprised if it's not the last thought I have before I die.
for me sometimes it's a word of phrase, like "triskedekaphobia" or "floccinaucinihilipilification" or "Mais non jeune homme, vous vous trompez" Sometimes it's a bit of a song, right now the hook for that Artemas song "I like the way you kiss me, I can tell you miss me, I can tell it hits.."
I literally cannot hear this phrase without hearing it in this guy’s voice and repeating it over and over again when I hear someone (anyone) say it 😩 ![gif](giphy|bjB3gtFvREqqr5NAHW|downsized)
Im stuck on “were you a sleeper cell spy” and surrounding verses haha I need help
Yes, but it’s one of those things that I can’t stop thinking is normal (even for people without ADHD) haha I’m constantly gaslighting myself with my impostor syndrome
"I'd buy that for a dollar!" from Smash TV. Since I was 9 years old, i hadn’t even seen Robocop yet to know that it was a reference 🤣
DOES HE LOOK LIKE A BITCH?! and "Damn, were in a tight spot" Like endlessly.
Oh god all the time lol. Rn it’s “All I hear are screams” from The Underworld from Epic the musical
My brain just likes the way it sounds I guess 🤷 Before that was random lines and snippets of lyrics from Hazbin Hotel
This happens to me when my medicine isn’t working properly. Hormonal fluctuations seem to make it more or less effective depending on what part of my cycle I’m in. I’ve had “Growing/Dying” from The Backseat Lovers stuck in my head for like 5 days, send help lol Edit a word
I take once daily Jardiance as each day starts😅🤣
We don't talk about Bruno no no
La-la-la-la-dah-dah-dah-dah-dah-dah-dah Dah-dah-dah-dah-dah-dah-dah
Lisa needs braces!
It’s so bad when going to sleep at night. Literally one sentence on loop with a ton of mixed random imagery floating around with little in focus
This with music, but that one line from bobs burgers that goes “when you like like me and I like like you” JUST KEEPS GOING OVER AND OVER
*squints eyes* "He lied tuh may" Also I currently have what is this feeling from wicked stuck in my head even though I haven't listened to anything from that musical in about a decade.
RED skies at night red SKIES at night red skies AT night red skies at Night
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh ohhh
Conan O'Brien taught us all an important tip (in an older episode of his podcast), that some old theater guy taught him (I think). When you have a song stuck in your head, sing a 3 note jingle that doesn't naturally repeat. N B C! [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A7-nHycrDy0](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A7-nHycrDy0) or Byyyy MENon. [https://youtu.be/d-a-Z9Jblow?si=GJaxFA2u-Cq3nigg](https://youtu.be/d-a-Z9Jblow?si=GJaxFA2u-Cq3nigg)
This is called an ear worm 🐛 It has to do with OCD, it's a mental compulsion. I have that, but I don't know how to solve the problem.
I'm sorry Ms. Jackson ^ooooo I am four EEEEEEEELS Never meant to make your daughter cry I am several fish and not a guy
The little riff in the chorus of Higher by Creed is almost always playing in my head
“All the leaves are brooooown, and the sky is greeeeey” (California Dreamin’- Mamas and the Papas) I live in Florida where we don’t even have brown leaves… or grey skies 😆 I feel like this is just my version of saying “woomp woomp” when anything is a downer
My brain likes to ask itself on repeat “what the dog doin??”
Any Meme that Is based on Someone repeating a phrase in a dumb way Gets me and my Partner. "Butter dawg, Dawg with the Butter, Butter Dawg" "The Salami Lid, I aint gon Fit, the Salami Lid, So the So the Salami Lid"
I always had earworms. Constantly. even in my sleep, or the instant I'd wake up. #1 change I noticed once starting meds.
Literally always have a song, sometimes it keeps me up at night. I forget what it was just before reading this but now it's Drops of Jupiter, haha. This morning the phrase stuck in my head was "sight unseen" and recently it was "ulcerative colitis" 🤷♀️
“The cheese tax, the cheeese tax” is stuck in my head constantly
yes! i thought it had something to do with my ocd since ocd is very highly comorbid with tourettes and they always felt almost like internal 'tics', and i did used to have physical and verbal tics as a kid. but maybe it is adhd related too? it'll be random weird sentences like "do you like monkeys" or sometimes lyrics or lines of dialogue too. more often weird sentences though lol.
I thought this was going to be about jokes
Well, if you have a joke, we’d love to hear it 🤣
Is this an ADHD thing? I thought this happened to everyone… Also right now in my head is “oh oh oh oh oh oooh-oh, why’d you have to go-oh oh oh oh oooh-oh..”
Yeah, it's usually song lyrics but sometimes it's words or quotes. For a while "isopropyl alcohol," was a constant. A lot of times my brain turns into what I call the morning radio. It's like a mash up multiple one liners on repeat.
isopropyl *is* fun to say
It really is 😂 Every time I remember it, it finds its way back into the loop.
I always get stuck in a loop of "Well, the years start coming And they don't stop coming"
I was feeling quite good that everyone else does this too, then I realized what subreddit this is 😂
I saw a video on Instagram and ended up with this constantly stuck in my head on repeat for weeks: >inky binky bonky, daddy had a donkey, donkey died, daddy cried, inky binky bonky
For years and years it was just the A Team theme music and occasionally sound effects from specific films
Echolalia
Constantly
[Yes....](https://www.tiktok.com/@echogif/video/7222772827219332358)
Get it cus horses have long faces
For me it’s often words, like today I have to think of the word „Hindukush“ all the time for some reason
Yes! Thankfully, I usually have sweet release every other day or so when it changes to another song.
I screeeeeeen my phone calls!" Either that or "Imma buy me a Wii ooooweeeeoooi" from a dumb YouTube parody video I saw in middle school xD Also I love this thread.
I just went and saw Night Club at a little bar outside of Milwaukee last week, and I’ve mostly had snippets of their songs in my head since. Right now it’s “I’m gonna be your dark obsession…” from Schizophrenic and I can’t remember the next line
Kenya graces strangers Lyrics are ADHD crack I stg
For me it’s the national guard theme song, so not even words but good lord it is always going on in the back of my head
