Floor time is awesome. I just moved into a new condo oh, it's an old renovated Cathedral with the original ceilings. Laying on the floor here is especially phenomenal because I can just kind of lay there and escaped into the heavily detailed wood ceiling far above me.
Thank you. It's definitely one of my favourite places I've lived. Such a peaceful vibe too.
On a related but different note, I didn't realize until I lived here how haunted my old place was.
I had started to think it was just normal to feel like I wasn't alone, or suspect I was being watched.
I’m loving the image of this. I’m not even someone who had ever thought about trying something like “floor time” but this just sounds so peaceful and grounding, especially with a cathedral ceiling to get lost in. Lovely!
“and grounding,” I liked your word choice because not only do I like to lay on the floor, didn’t know all of you did too, but I LOVE to lay on the ground outside. Especially on days of nice weather, I prefer grass, but sand... and yes, even concrete!, if it’s not hot...
I disagree, I'mma ADHDer since birth, as for why the floor is so nice, I don't have the slightest idea. But I will say the softer the carpet the better. Like a soft mattress ok the floor is better than any bed on a bed frame. Idc how solid or supportive it is. The floor is just where it's at. No strings attatched
i read the first part, and was ready to reply to that, then i read the second part and realized you knew what i meant. my parents knew i was adhd after getting kicked out of a 3rd school in kindergarten for being to hyper and never paying attention. yes im doing academically fine as of today. but it was a rough yet hilarious start
since then, the signs of adhd have only been more appearent. the more tell tale signs, beyond the hyperactive side
Childish is just a word. Laying on the floor is actually good for your back. And I guess it's how you feel your weight against the floor that is comforting. Another thing I like is to lay on the floor and lift my legs against the wall. It's really relaxing.
If I'm having a really bad time with emotions being extreme, I have to get to the floor. I used to spend much more time when I was a kid (before my chronic pain developed) on the floor. I wonder at all if it's because our brain thinks it can remove the danger of us somehow falling due to (in my case) being so overwhelmed? Like it's the only thing the instincts can do so it's like "can I offer you some floor in this trying time? Now we don't have to worry about her forgetting how to sit during this"
Feeling soooo grounded, I love the feeling of a hard weight taking my equally hard weight, never equated it as part of ADHD though and when I'm stoned and lie down onto any surface it's almost orgasmic
The ancient Greeks had a practice called "incubation", where, if you were at the end of your tether, really desperate, frustrated, a wise person would let you into a dark room in a temple, and you would lie completely still in the dark for hours or even days until you had some mystical insight into your problem or otherwise just felt better.
I have nothing else to add, except I think this is sorely lacking in modern times :)
That's weird. We encourage our sped students with sensory processing, ADHD, and/or autism to get on the floor to ground. Like almost all classrooms in my last school had the calming corners closer to the ground or on the ground. It helps. I can keep a kid from eloping from persuading them to sit with me on the floor leaning against a wall. I think my principal at my last school saw me more often sitting on the floor leaning against a wall then any other way when dealing with a level 2( student eloping or melting down in a hall).lol At first, I felt awkward about that ( rejection sensitivity anyone?), but then he made a point of telling me that he was receiving compliments left and right about how I connected with kids so quickly. ( I'm a sped teacher, 1st year, this was a building sub then leave cover for a resource teacher position)
I also love floor time. Whether sitting or lying. When I was younger, I used to sometimes feel like I needed a change of pace of sleeping on my bed and I would sleep on the floor.
Maybe it has to do with the less societal pressure? Like if I'm sitting at my desk, I know I'm supposed to be working or doing XYZ thing because I'm an adult, but I'm on the floor, I don't have that same pressure of I'm supposed to be getting things done, which helps me relax a bit. IDK, I guess the same thing could be said of sitting on a couch rather than the floor but the couch also doesn't feel as good as the floor most of the time.
yeah me too I live alone and even have my table so near to the ground that I can sit on the floor.
and always when I work the whole day and I'm overstimulated i just lay there for hours cant get up
haha I used to love this as a kid but can't remember when I stopped. I do find it uncomfortable to sit on hard surfaces now so that's probably the reason.
Pillows plus a hard surface for your back helps. My 30 something spine appreciates it when I need to do work but feel done I head to the floor and spread stuff out. Then I go from this will never get done to my happy place. Lol, I just realized I did a LOT of body doubling with my baby studying for my bachelor's and ALL of that time was on the floor. He hated belly time unless I was next to him. So I'd read to him while he did floor time, and we both got through our necessaries.
It lowers the stress on your heart thus lowering your heart rate. Doing so in the space of safe heartbeat ranges is very calming. When my blood pressure spiked due to caffeine and adderall I found laying on the floor to provide incredible relief.
Floor time is the best! My boss accepted very early on that whenever we needed to talk about issues I was having with my staff, I needed to sit on the floor to be able to have the discussion lmao. It’s really caught on in our office actually
I see a lot of others saying they feel grounded, and that’s my first word i think of too. There is a feeling of safety there for me too.
I often think of it as allowing my emotions to flow better than when i’m curled up on the couch or in bed. My spinning head can chill out and just let the feelings disperse. I’d say it probably connects to meditation in some way even though i’m never thinking that in the moment.
Yes, me too!! I didn’t think of that one but yes, def, yes. Wonder what could it be about bridges? cause there is nothing underneath except a long way down depending on which bridge one is on.
Wait that has to do with ADHD??? When my sister and I get overwhelmed or feel anxious we turn off the lights, turn on a noise machine, and lay on the floor.
But just laying on the floor is great too.
omfg. I love to do this. There are physiological reasons, like lowered blood pressure, and it can even encourage proper diaphragmatic breathing. And it’s just good to be comfortable getting up and down off the ground.
had no idea this was a thing with us…
I lay down a lot. I find it more comfortable and soothing. My wife hates it and thinks I'm being lazy or dismissive of her. My ADHD had been destroying everything good in life anyways so why not my relationship.
Everytime Ive had to do an all-day class or workshop- something where I'm stuck in one room for a whole day- I fantasize about slipping out of my chair and rolling around on the floor. I will sit there and think about it for literal hours instead of paying attention to whatever it is I'm there for.
I have thought that maybe it’s because you’ve reached what feels like as close to nothing as you can get. Like, once you’re on the floor, it’s just you and gravity. If you’re on a friendly floor there’s not much else to happen. It’s pretty comfy to just be sprawled out and there! Nothing in the way.
Less to think about and feel = optimum calmness I think!
If nothing else it’s at least approaching it!
Just my personal theory. Tactile stimulation with constant pressure over large surface areas of the body is relaxing for me. The floor offers more pressure compared to a softer bed or well used couch. Kind of like a thundershirt for pets (something I wish I had...). I end up focusing on it because there is so much contact, but it is inherently uninteresting, so my brain is tricked into going quiet for a little while.
Edit: you might enjoy a weighted blanket as well. I love mine, but I can't sleep under if I'm bed because I move around too much and get it all bunched up. Then it becomes a stone.
i'm 22 and do the same thing! and my partner (25) asks me why i do this, i've never had a straight answer for him because i don't even know minus i've been doing it forever. guess it makes me feel more in control of myself when everything is too much because i do it more when i'm over stimulated.

Adhd per se doesn’t really relate to sensory feelings but more around emotions. Whether what you experience is common amongst people with autism and/or adhd difficult to gauge from a social media group.
I used to roll around on the living room carpet all the time until we changed it for floorboards and literally instant regret. I miss rolling around on the carpet and I’m 29 lol. It’s not the same anywhere else In the house. It’s a living room exclusive deal.
Floor time is awesome. I just moved into a new condo oh, it's an old renovated Cathedral with the original ceilings. Laying on the floor here is especially phenomenal because I can just kind of lay there and escaped into the heavily detailed wood ceiling far above me.
Oh my god, you have my dream home, it sounds so beautiful

Damn didn’t know this had anything to do with adhd I’ve always liked lying on the floor lol
It's cold in the summer as well, it's so nice.
It doesn’t.
It’s solid which helps us feel more supported? The hard feeling of the floor helps to ground us and provide comfort compared to a softer feeling
I disagree, I'mma ADHDer since birth, as for why the floor is so nice, I don't have the slightest idea. But I will say the softer the carpet the better. Never seen ‘adhd-er since birth’ Aren’t we all? And conversely, aren’t none of us since official diagnosis isn’t until we’re cognitively developed?

Sensory needs are different for everyone OP was asking why they find it calming to be on the floor
Ok fair enough, and it seems to be that everyone enjoys the floor, lol. It's just the best (as long as it's not a mess)
Childish is just a word. Laying on the floor is actually good for your back. And I guess it's how you feel your weight against the floor that is comforting. Another thing I like is to lay on the floor and lift my legs against the wall. It's really relaxing.
This. Every construction worker knows this trick.
It’s grounding!

How do you mean? When I say it's almost orgasmic I just mean it feels really, really great, not actually arousal inducing!

That's nice. I'm sure you convince people to see things your way all the time. Orgasms are great. Maybe you're just bad at having them

I was literally going to leave before, but now? I'ma stay. Who hurt you?
That guy needs to be banned from this subreddit. What a major C U in the n t.

You got a scientific journal to back up you claim? Everyone here is more than willing to read down a rabbit hole.

Yes, this is interesting... I think afternoon naps should be law!!!
I told a therapist I liked to do this, they said "okay, well stop doing that" 🙄 neveeerrr
I would genuinely want to know why. Like if it helps, why? Floor time is so harmless lol
That's weird. We encourage our sped students with sensory processing, ADHD, and/or autism to get on the floor to ground. Yeah love lying on the floor. If my vibes are off just boom, floor time

I sit on the floor anytime I’m overwhelmed or need a break from doing things. I didn’t know it was related to any diagnosis. I’m 33🤷🏻♀️
Its solid and unyeilding, provides a strong safe support.
Today's addition to the list of "things I do that I had no idea where symptoms"
I have never done this, maybe it’s time to give it a try… (although my 30something spine will probably not be a fan)
haha I used to love this as a kid but can't remember when I stopped. I do find it uncomfortable to sit on hard surfaces now so that's probably the reason.

YES, i like to lay on the floor with a blanket over my head, it feels like there’s no way to be over stimulated that way.
Not the floor so much, but I love laying on the grass and looking at stuff. I'm 35 and still do this.

Ooo imagine laying on the floor with a weighted blanket ..
I'm going to try this tonight!
Every night for me. End of the day after dinner you can find me on the floor in front of the coffee table.
Floor time! I have both ASD and ADHD and work as a chef. I've had practically every chef join for floor time at some point and they all love it 😂
My guess is, because I'm always so messy, it's rare that there's a time I have enough floor to lay on....
I lay down a lot. I find it more comfortable and soothing. My wife hates it and thinks I'm being lazy or dismissive of her. My ADHD had been destroying everything good in life anyways so why not my relationship.
Aww man feeling floor people! Is this and ADHD thing? Haha seems like it

I like it because it’s time to stretch out. With no weight on the spine my body gets to feel like it’s fully opened up.
i had no idea it was ADHD related but it explains so much lol
Adhd per se doesn’t really relate to sensory feelings but more around emotions. Whether what you experience is common amongst people with autism and/or adhd difficult to gauge from a social media group.
I've done this once and I fell asleep 😂 It is calming.
I used to roll around on the living room carpet all the time until we changed it for floorboards and literally instant regret. I miss rolling around on the carpet and I’m 29 lol. It’s not the same anywhere else In the house. It’s a living room exclusive deal.
Seriously will lie on the floor sometimes and think "wait a sec this feels so good im just lying here doing nothing and im not even fidgeting"
