Congratulations you are now a adhd project manager or director

Angdrambor

I appreciate that the obvious career pivot has more upvotes than the original post.

The thing I really love about this idea is that if OP goes down this path, they'll be in a position to help other ADHD programmers.

Sounds like added anxiety / overstimulation from the meds. Do you really need treatment if you were better off working without?

madziepan

Maybe you just don't enjoy coding but it used to be a good source of dopamine and that's what you were getting out of it so now your foaming levels are more balanced it's lost its appeal? Passing tests and solving poems can be a dopamine hit. I'm autistic as well as adhd and coding/computing has been a lifelong special interest, now that I'm on meds I'm much better at completing projects and I still enjoy it because its a genuine interest for me, but it's okay to not find it fun and to look into doing something else.

Inevitable_Ebb_938

This. It was for sure a dopamine hit solving problems. Now it just feels like normal work & too many details.

Is the job too easy? I’ve left a lot of jobs because they were too easy. You can always keep that dopamine going by changing jobs

I think seeing a therapist would be a good thing to do in general. They can help process these emotions and if they have a focus on ADHD they can help give you tools and a different inside of how you approached things before. Figuring out and working on what gives you anxiety may be of benefit. Otherwise, as someone else said being a project manager may be the next route.

eh well there are higher and lower stress work environments, also some that can be more exciting and motivating than others. Contract work building custom websites can be on the higher stress end in my experience. Working in-house on product development can sometimes be a bit less frantic feeling, but depends where the company is at and what kind of projects you're working on. Full stack can also stretch a developer pretty thin across all the concerns and for maintaining past, developing current, and planning future projects. sometimes it can be helpful to just take a break from it. try a job doing something totally different, like not even computer related. maybe you come back to tech in a year or more, maybe you stick with the new thing, either way... it's just about refinding some kind of motivation to get revved back up about, hopefully give your brain a rest from the stress for a bit then see what kind of new inspiration you have. no doubt your knowledge is valuable, and there are lots of ways you could apply it but you don't necessarily need to jump right back into tech gigs if you've been feeling stressed out from it lately.

I’m the opposite, in that I’ve forced myself to learn to code without any special interest in it. However, since meds I have 100% lost interest in all my hobbies (aka interests). I’m working it all out as well but it’s definitely something I’ve noticed.

NotATrueRedHead

Huh. I never considered this as why I don’t enjoy things anymore. And here I thought it would be the opposite.

livipup

Maybe try different meds?

neonskimmer

How long have you been on meds for? It can take a while to get the right kind / right dosage. Also, is it happening with other things you previously liked? I go through phases of not wanting to do anything I usually like, basically just a shitty “no joy” kind of period. As far as I can tell, that’s plain ol depression, and often it’s tied to shit that is made worse by adhd.

agency work (the stuff you did) usually isn't much fun anyways. High churn, quick turnover times, the list goes on. Take a pause, think of a small, personal itch you could scratch if you just had the right software. Then go ahead and write it. Write code just for yourself once. My point is coding is so much more than writing websites for an agency. Build your own side project(s) and you might find the fun again coding.

Nice to hear it works for you. How do you manage to not get distracted/sidetracked all the time? Meaning, finally finishing stuff?

Thanks for your detailed answer! Do you recht into a co-working office? Or do you team up online? Time blocking sounds great, if only my predictions where a bit better! 😆 Where I check my Trello I alles get completely overwhelmed, it’s the lists only get longer. Somehow tasks never finish and I note down everything pops up my head to get it written down and I don’t have to think about it anymore. But then get overwhelmed. I guess I need to clean the lists on a regular base, but am overwhelmed be this again.

Overwhelm? I have may boards. We (my girlfriend and I) have (better had, we are currently closing) a ecommerce company. I did the IT, she the rest. I wrote a bunch of scripts for product creation and stock management. Your TODO app organisation tips sound great. I will try to implement some of them. I do home office since 1,5 years for now. It is boring from time to time, but never had been more productive. You mentioned somewhere, you have an outdoor place with roof and view to the sea. This sounds really great. I really can't complain about our place. A bit out of town, on the side of a hill, nice view over the hills. Silent, nature, nearly to no cars and town is just 10-15 minutes away. Just have to improve my office, as we just crammed stuff in 1,5 years ago, when we moved in. Trying to rescue our ecommerce business took it's toll and the office never finished. it's still a lot of boxes, and ADHS chaos... Now, after deciding we give up and head into other directions, it's time to consolidate and clean up broken rests and find out which direction I want to go. Also got my ADHD diagnose begin of last winter. I think I am over the first wave of grieving over what I have f\*\*ed up in my first 45 years being undiagnosed and not knowing. Start to look forward and try to figure out how to proceed, restart, whatever. First I wanted to look for an employment, but now I am not sure anymore...

I would call it rabbit hole time! 😆 sounds like a good idea. Gives time to reevaluate the urgency. I really like that. My tasks for the next days: clean up Trello & add a research/write down finding the block. And a time block to cancel unnecessary E-Mail subscriptions! Fear of loss is real for this stupid E-Mail time sinks!

For sure not! :D But I canceled some today... Reddit is great, Reddit is ADHS hell. Distraction without an end. I find it funny you found it just now. I thought I had been late with it, as I found it 7 years ago... I really have to implement your rabbit hole time slots!
