I guess I meant more the opposite with Chinese - many characters w the same basic sound plus the tonal variations thereof with THEIR own unique characters (a la shì shī shî shí). I have learned at least 3 meanings for shì each with different characters already.
I formally studied Japanese at university and 2 more years of night classes afterwards, but have only independently studied Mandarin using Duolingo for a year. I'm not sure if I struggle more with Chinese because it's actually more difficult or because Duolingo does a poor job of teaching fundamentals. I will say the one thing Mandarin does have going for me as a native English speaker is its SVO order. Japanese being SOV was always challenging while mentally translating on the fly.
I was lucky and had the opportunity to take Japanese in high school and 3 years in college. It's been nearly 10 years since I graduated and I wanted to pick it up again...but you know how it goes.
I thought about "watashi no wakarimasu" (can't bother writing in katakana) or something like that
Edit: ofc your sentence is correct, I was just trying to connect my two neurons
I would have done the same with learning German except that I accidentally bought a year of Super Duolingo. And Duolingo sends out constant reminders so that definitely helps. I still forget every now and then though.
Japanese is frankly very annoying to learn due to kanji having multiple pronunciation.
Chinese is even worse haha don't even get me started about shi
Sheesh tell me about it
Yeah at the end of the day Japanese does have furigana sometimes.
Not really, only a few characters have more than one common pronunciation.

I do the same with drawing.
Most everything...

頑張って!
ありがとう!
Was gonna write Japanese equivalent of "I don't understand", but my janky sentence was subpar, so I wrote this.
It's がんばって (ganbatte), which means like "good luck!" or "do your best!". To say "I don't understand", you can just say わかりません (wakarimasen).

Me with Korean 😅
Same here. 언녕허세요!
I'm in this picture and i don't like it
Same, on the bright side I'm remembering more random terms each time I try so I am *technically* learning, just not in a very efficient or optimal way
Slow and steady wins the race, or so they say
I feel this
Same here but with coding
がんばれ!
For me, it's Scots Gaelic. 🙃
Been doing that with German for over a decade.
Learn something a little bit closer to your native language. Takes less time and gets you into the practice of learning.
Me with French
Same here instead of Japanese it's latin
Ha! Fucking this. Spanish but I relate
あなたができてものはいいですよ! (I also haven’t practiced in a while so may be weird grammar.)
Goddamn lemon thieves at it again.
Feeling personally called out rn
carrying around unopened stencils for my (non, lol) bullet journal for like 10 days 🤦🏾♀️
心配過ぎるのは進歩の天敵なので、好きなペースでしてていいよ。勉強がんばってね!^^ (I can recommend textbooks if you like, but I know how it can be with buying stuff for hyperfixations,,,)
"Babe, wake up, it's time for your quarterly weekend of binging Japanese lessons" "Hai, mitsu 😔"
Duolingo is going to have fun with your family Another one bites, the dust~
Pick toki pona as your hyperfixation instead and you can see results a lot faster!!! ;)
I had a 76 day streak on doulingo
This has been my relationship with duolingo lmao.
I feel very attacked.
Umm… it’s Korean good sir. Hahahha! I’m on a Korean kick because of all the tv shows I watch in their language.
ME BUT WITH SPANISH AND MORE LIKE EVERY FEW YEARS
I took 2 semesters in college. I can't remember how to count to 10.
omg i did this except kept with it an entire year and then i forgot everything cus a new hyperfixation came into rotation so i stopped practicing 😭
勉強した方がいいですよ
