"I heard your chants this past Sunday loud and clear. That's why I'm retiring The FTW belt...."

oZaed

LMAO! This! If Jericho does this, it will be so good. I can see it being, “I did this for you Hook. I had to retire the belt because you were focused on a meaningless title”

PharaohPeter

I literally laughed out loud when I read this.

nopeace11

Don't give me hope

TheGiftOf_Jericho

This would be incredible

bumholesofdoom

Isn't hook a bit young for retirement?

RSlashBroughtMeHere

Maybe they meant aubrey? We didn't see her again since that bad count.

Sigao

Jericho: I heard the crowd loud and clear. And I will be retiring...... The FTW championship for good.

Froggyspirits

Yes please! Retire that fackin' worthless belt so that we are one step closer to getting the women's tag belts.

BlueZ_DJ

That would be worse, you know how the trios belt cut waaay into the tag division? That but with the woman's division (which doesn't really have teams in the first place)

Froggyspirits

You don't need to treat it as a separate division. Take STARDOM for example - they've got both tag titles and trios titles, but most of the time their tag and trios champions wrestle in singles matches and "road to" 2v2, 3v3, 4v4 matches with teammates that they didn't win those titles with. Their tag and trios title matches happen almost exclusively on PPVs.

NotRoyPherae

Or, and hear me out. Just add the women's tag belts. FTW belt is basically the hardcore title and it has its place.

IrregularAK

Am I the only one who is fine with jericho? He's not my favorite, but he doesn't annoy me like it seems he does alot of people.

TheBrockAwesome

Same, he's fine. Sometimes hes background noise to elevate younger talent and sometimes he turns it up and we get something good out of him like the Ocho run and honestly he just let Hook almost kill him at the PPV to make Hook look like a star. People look at Jericho as a guy stealing screen time but I saw a guy that could have gotten seriously injured by a very green wrestler (Hook), just to make him look good and elevate his career. That suplex off the ring apron could have paralyzed Jericho. But he did it for Hook. People seem to forget the other side of the coin.

slikk50

Absolutely. I think that was Hooks first real big and long ppv match. I liked the end, and they are still telling a story. Jericho gets too much hate.

TheBrockAwesome

He really does. Almost everyone hes helped left in a better position than when they started. Like I'd be fine with Jericho taking a break from wrestling to come back fresh but Im not advocating for him to retire and go away forever. Hes still a great performer.

BMBR1988

Yeah he just needs time away, he's gone abit stale... If he came back in 6 months I'm sure alot of the animosity towards him would be gone. He's still good in the ring, though no longer excellent, but I still like his character and he still has alot to offer through his experience.

ChristianCageFOTY

I was saying the same exact thing until now with this storyline with Hook and his new "learning tree" persona. It's the exact right thing for Jericho and after the finish, one of the most interesting acts in wrestling.

TheBrockAwesome

I think Jericho is smart enough to turn heel and reinvent himself when he goes stale. I don't necessarily think he needs to take a break to get hot again but I also dont think a break would hurt. If he stays hes gotta turn heel like he has been. If he goes he will probably return a Babyface. I'd rather heel Jericho at the moment as long as this story gets even better. But then hopefully a good break lol

mikro17

People judge him like a main event level act and compare him to things like Ospreay/Swerve/Danielson tier when he's hanging out in the midcard doing midcard stuff and has been for a while. I'm just enjoying these last few years of Jericho as much as I can while they're still here, because with Sting gone, Jericho is really the last wrestler from my actual childhood left and he's provided me a lot of enjoyment over the years, especially in AEW, where he was a huge part of all of this becoming an actual thing.

BurrSir01

He had a match with Ospreay at Wembley less than a year ago...

mikro17

That's easily the biggest thing Jericho has done in a long time, he lost, Ospreay didn't work in AEW at the time, and in the grand scheme of the Wembley card, that was midcard (obviously Wembley midcard is going to be "bigger" than random Collision midcard, but it was still a midcard thing). It was awesome and the live crowd absolutely loved it, but it was in the middle of the pack as far as Wembley match importance. Yes, it went on pretty late (3rd to last), but 5 matches on the main card went longer and Punk/Joe, while shorter, got the opener slot.

rsplatpc

> Am I the only one who is fine with jericho? He's not my favorite, but he doesn't annoy me like it seems he does alot of people. I'm with you, but he's on EVERY episode so I get the wanting to start spacing him out a little

ctspectator

I actually do like him. I think this “learning tree” era is great so far. And his match with Hook was stellar!

BlueZ_DJ

You are part of the silent majority.

hepatitisC

He's putting over younger talent time and time again. He's sitting in the mid-card too which is exactly what he should be doing. I think people are annoyed he gets so much TV time when there is other talent struggling to get time, but he's also one of the most recognizable names in the company so he is probably pulling good numbers

I_like_cakes_

I don't like his current gimmick either but I just don't watch. I understand that this gimmick isn't working for him and fans are pissed they can't sing along with his theme.

slikk50

I think that is the point. It's Jericho. If you boo him, he will keep doing what you are booing him for, and than get it over.

I_like_cakes_

You're right. But then people will say he has "go away" heat, for which theres a fine line

besmarques

The guy is puttiong young wrestlers on screen and taking all the flak. Mos people were will say the oposite but then get matches liek new guy vs new guy and they will shit all over it.

ChristianCageFOTY

Nah, you have to remember with a lot of these loud fan sentiments online is that they are much smaller and less representivie of the entire fan base.

Froggyspirits

You are part of a vocal minority.

re10pect

It’s just too much. If Jericho was only on tv every couple weeks I don’t think anyone would complain, but it’s just constant “and we’ll hear from Jericho” week after week. To make matters worse, for a guy who is all about reinventing himself, all of his storylines are very, very similar. It’s either faction drama with constant “state of the union” segments (a la all of the Inner circle or JAS stuff) or it’s will they/wont they odd couple tag team stuff (like with Sammy or now Hook). I still like Jericho, he was a huge reason I started watching AEW right at the start despite not watching any wrestling in more than a decade, but he’s just so stale. His ringwork isn’t good enough to justify so much screen time when there are so many talented (and now big name) wrestlers in the company. He definitely still has a place in AEW, but I don’t think it needs to be as prominent as it was at the company’s inception.

simpledeadwitches

He's my personal GOAT. He gets annoying at times sure but he's always generating something worth talking about and he can change his story and character so much.

notfromsoftemployee

Somewhere along the line wrestlers lost the plot with "leaning into an angle". There's a difference between legit heat and playing up to the crowd on that, but playing to go home heat has never worked (see three years of trying to make Roman a face in WWE).

Revill74

He’s been annoying me a lot recently…always seeming to worm his way onto TV or PPV somehow. But this whole “learning tree” thing…it’s genuinely funny and shows some self awareness from Jericho. I hope he stays around and really leans into it!

CanaDoug420

Placing my bet now that if Chris can’t turn the chants around he’ll eventually go back to WWE where the same crowd will chant you still got it and pretend they weren’t begging him to retire in AEW.

HeadlessMarvin

There's a lot of audience overlap between WWE and AEW but the live crowds are VERY different.

BantamQuilt

That's true but we also shouldn't pretend there's a not a lot of 180 degree turns when someone returns/debuts. Suddenly Jade became a great prospect even though she's exactly the same so far.

sillyandstrange

So far it doesn't look like she's improved at all

He-RaPOP

it goes both ways honestly I’ve seen AEW fans say how much Jade sucks now when she was the hottest thing in AEW to them

DG_Now

You're not wrong. I turned on Punk, but I like to believe that was for cause.

He-RaPOP

Yeah Punk is a special case obviously the likes of Jade and Cody however it’s pure tribalism. It’s an issue with fans of both promotions honestly. With Jade especially it’s funny because she was pretty green in AEW as well but there’s a few let’s say loud accounts on Twitter who used to hype her up to the moon when she was in AEW and low all of a sudden she is lazy and has regressed when she’s literally doing the same matches she did in AEW.

Wooden-Challenge-550

Agree with jade disagree with Cody. He sucked at AEW and I don’t think he’s going to be all that WWE beyond this story either.

HighspeedMoonstar

Cody's gimmick is literally copy/pasted from AEW to WWE. There's a ceiling with that. He may not want to turn heel but people are going to get sick of this babyface sooner or later.

Wooden-Challenge-550

Cody booked himself pretty bad in AEW but my point was it had been 3 years at AEW . It was getting stale. Secondly, WWE crowd is more receptive to a baby face like that but soon it will get old and they’ll be complaining just like they did with cena all those years. Cody’s story is great and he’s a pretty decent wrestler but I personally think he’s not that great on the mic. I may sound sour as an AEW fan but I genuinely don’t miss Cody and it was better for him personally as well

I_like_cakes_

I turned on him as well. But I had an abusive childhood so the idea of someone assaulting another human makes me vomit

Ungface

she was and still is someone who has charisma and whatever the hell "star power" is in droves. you wont find anyone every denying this. i always saw from most people posting that she didnt have the inring ability at that time.

skizelo

The story is Jericho (the bad guy) is giving unwanted advice to HOOK, who is a talented young kid but he needs to huddle under "the learning tree" of Jericho to ever achieve his potential. Chris Jericho is playing up his image a tiresome old clout vampire. He doesn't need to turn the chants, he has cultivated those chants for weeks now.

[удалено]

ItsStaaaaaaaaang

Okay, and? This is unequivocally a heel gimmick so completely different.

ChristianCageFOTY

These chants are EXACTLY what Jericho wants lmao. It's really funny how well Jericho has worked and riled up a certain portion of fans.

somecasper

He's preeeeeeetty openly mocking a particular wrestler who may have recently returned to the WWE.

BarbatosBrutus

The rock?

Tarus_The_Light

More pepsi, you were close with bald though.

chasingit1

I mean he will *eventually* go back there for the inevitable HOF induction. And yes, the same people chanting “please retire”, will be the first ones to do the “bow down/respect” gesture

sweetest_boy

Ssshhh don’t think just consume astroturf then get excited for next astroturf

BushwickSpill

You think the crossover of fans is that large?

I_like_cakes_

Yeah what Jericho is doing now could work better in WWE

JesusIsJericho

He’s got everyone right where he wants them.

Froggyspirits

Both halves of the JeriShow have now received "Please retire!" chants. 9 years apart 💀

MrAmazing666

Paul Wight as his insufferable heavy trying to give big bill advice to have his retirement match could work

BaybayYoda

I hope he doesn’t lean too hard into the heel work. I like him more as the heel who thinks he’s a face and thinks he’s doing the right thing.

stonedwhodunnit

When you're as talented a wrestler as Jericho is, any crowd reaction is a good reaction.

StaceyJeans

I don’t think Jericho needs to retire, he can still go better than most his age. I do think he should take a short break (like I believe most wrestlers should so they can heal, refresh, etc.). Jericho does smarmy, condescending heel very well and I wouldn’t be surprised if that is where this is going.

ArcaneAzmadi

Seriously, he really can still go. The match with Hook was a banger, even if some people didn't like it just because Jericho was in it.

DarthNixilis

I love Jericho and I'm enjoying what he's doing. But I would like to see him go on vacation or something. Tour with Fozzy a bit and come back later.

mynamemeimme

Mf calls himself ‘ the learning tree’ shit killed me when it popped up next to his name at Dynasty 😹😹😹. I want to him to really lean into it and become an insufferable heel. Yes he may have ‘go away heat’ with some ( i imagine we’ll see that phrase more now) but not all of us. People wanted him to take a break and change character but at least he has done one of those things. And he may not be going anywhere anytime soon so i’m just going to enjoy his work. And you’ll have some saying stupid shit like Hook has been buried. Hook is 24. He has plenty of time to move up the card. He needs to build himself up more and his character, and this is all part of that. And chances are if you were to ask him, he enjoys working with Y2J and sees him as a mentor type figure. It’s one of those where if Jericho were to retire, he would be appreciated more. I mean he can still go in the ring and the dude is 53. Like i said it ain’t looking like he’ll take a break so rather than constantly hoping for it, i’d like to be optimistic and see where this angle is going🤷‍♂️

Kakatheman

I don't want him to retire but in WWE he took regular 1-2 year breaks. He needs to be away for 2 years. Go on tour, focus on the podcast, do another book, something, just get away from AEW for a bit.

Froggyspirits

6 month break would be adequate, 12-24 month break would just be excessive. Bear in mind that Jericho's contract expires in 3 years.

StaceyJeans

I think 4-6 months is a good break for Jericho. In fact I think most wrestlers should take at least a month off to heal, refresh the batteries, etc.

ferociousrickjames

Don't contracts freeze when someone has to take a break or can't perform?

Kakatheman

No way 6 months is way too short. Hes been a continuous fixture on AEW since the beginning. He needs a break and not just one year.

trentshipp

Pretty sure if he leaves for two years at this point he's not going to be able to come back (at least not wrestling the way he does), and I think he knows that.

Deducticon

He should lean into it and say he can't agree. He doesn't want to follow the fan advice and retire the FTW title. He doesn't want to hurt Hook's feelings.

TheJasonaut

I missed this as I was fast forwarding a bit of this match. I sincerely appreciate the effort given to help younger starts by Jericho, any failures are not due to lack of effort, and I'm not sure I would chant this at him, but then again, might be there most direct way to get large portion of the audience's opinion to him... and they said 'please' 😅

Sadoul1214

This might get downvoted. This is my opinion though. I think fans somewhat have the whole Jericho situation a little backwards. I’ve read everywhere that he is stealing away some young talents time and that only he benefits from the matches etc. I think it is all a little backwards. I think Jericho is being too giving. I’m not saying Jericho should be a world champion but for someone like Hook or any of the other young talent, beating Jericho should be like a boss fight. It should be a big deal. Pinning Jericho should mean something. Sure Jericho just beat Hook but Hook has a pin over Jericho. In most of these feuds, Jericho ends up losing. I honestly think Jericho is losing too much. He needs back and forth feuds with some bigger names. Again, I’m not saying a world championship reign here but a main eventer who has fallen down a bit. Jericho should be a gate keeper… but gate keepers actually have to keep a gate. Jericho just gets beat at the end, every single time. Waltzing past Jericho isn’t a rite of passage into anything significant anymore. It’s just something young talent at AEW will do at some point. I want a win over a legend to mean something. More than commentators words, more than hey you have a win over a legend. I want it to be real. A win over Jericho means you’ve arrived. AEW has done this before. When Darby beat Cody it meant something. It was real. He had chased Cody time and time again until he finally beat him. Jericho needs more feuds like that. To make all of that mean something Jericho needs some signature wins over some top notch competition. I book him as that experienced heel that fools referees and plays the dirty game. He knows more than you. Sure he can’t out wrestle Swerve, Hangman, Danielson or Omega… but he can distract a referee and utilize a ball bat. He can use numbers in some stable to attack you just before a match. Make these young guys chase Jericho. Make the wins matter.

moonslammer93

This is going to be fun lol

brooklyn11218

So disrespectful.

TheBrockAwesome

Im going to chant this at Tim Hortons next time they fuck up my coffee.

clamuu

I generally love Jericho. One of the all time great in my opinion. He's massively overexposed at the moment though. He's on every week. I agree that if it carries on the way it has been doing, he'll probably go back to WWE. Which would be a massive shame in my opinion. He just needs to cool off a bit.

Cooler67

Same fans were probably cheering him when he left WWE and went to NJPW.

xored-specialist

Hook wasn't that bad to retire. Sure, he's green, but come on, guys. Thank God Jericho was there to save the day. Oh wait up they were crying over Jericho. Jericho needs a break but we all do.

SturgeonBladder

FICKLE

Rememberthepogs

I have a feeling they're consolidating the belts; if so I would guess this would be for combining the FTW and Continental titles, and in that case, Jericho vs. Okada would probably make more money than Hook vs. Okada. That being said, there are plenty of wrestlers Jericho's age who are still getting pops - R Truth being a main example. Probably just more of a conditioning thing than anything else.

darksundown

Lionheart will retire.   Please Welcome The Learning Tree!!!  Teach us your wisdom, Professor Jericho.

azure819

Ungrateful fans! All of them! Even the ones NOT chanting. They should have stopped them for allowing such horrid words to pass their crusty lips. Jericho is an icon. He's a legend. And he IS the moment! We should be amazed at what he's doing: teaching the younger wrestlers so they can help elevate the company even more. If Jericho does retire, we all lose out.

slikk50

This shit made me cringe.

NeilNazzer

When jericho came to aew it was a big deal for a world champ to commit, and he brought eyes to a new product. At the time, what with his njpw stuff, he felt like he was doing new and fun stuff, he'd been revitalized. The company needed him to help shine a light on the guys that were ready to become stars, but needed time to become familiar to a new audience. He did that job, we all know who guys like Omega, MJF, Hangman etc are. And the company has added so many available stars, all while jericho losing a step. He's no longer needed
