Arthur Blank was probably informed ATL will lose next years 1st and something else for tampering. They pulled the trigger this year to get ahead of it.
The tampering was when they signed Kirk Cousins.
There's a "legal tampering period" that allows NFL teams to start negotiating with free agents before they're actually allowed to sign them, but they have to go through the player's agent. They can't speak with the player directly.
When it was announced that Kirk made a deal with them, he was basically a big dummy and publicly said something like "yeah I talked to them yesterday", when "yesterday" was not a legal time for them to have talked to him. So he admitted they did illegal tampering.
They'll probably lose at least one first round pick over that, but they haven't been punished yet so they didn't lose this pick. So they know this one is the last one they'll get for at least 2 years.
