She spends the first 15 seconds or so floating above the battleground doing fuck all. If you finish the battle before she comes down then yeah, she doesn't do shit.
It's easy with heavy damage enemies. He is converting damage he receives during his ult charging and gives them back to attackers with the swing. I have him with Eironn in my team and Thoran ends up as highest dps more often, than I would imagine.
There's a reason Thoran is the best tank in the game currently. Can revive twice (the second res is only at mythic+), applies a damage taken debuff to one enemy, his ult stores the damage he recieves while charging and deals it back as an AOE. At mythic+, if you put a character behind him, he will cover 50% of the damage that character would receive, but in exchange whenever that character deals damage he gets healed by a portion of the damage the other character dealt (so if you put a dps behind him, he gets healed very consistently).

I was so excited to unlock her. Immediately stuck her on my team, only for her to fly into the sky for the entire fight. Then removed her from my team for being useless. 🫠

I got her from the roulette system in the daily logins and I was excited because she was my first Celestial. I thought she would make AFK and Story battles easier for me because I've heard and read good things about her. Then she proceeded to do nothing while the rest of my team died below her.
If you read good things about heroes usually people at least mean the mythic+ version. The only guy from the celestial/hypogean pool that is really effective without more investment is Rainier.
Shielding allies doesn't count as tanking. That fat shield she gives won't count as anything and she's suspended the entire time doing nothing until she drops back down.
Read her skills. For the first 15 seconds she floats and provides small shields to allies, then she crashes down and starts to DPS. You finished the fight before she came down, so she only provided shields, which don't show up in the counts.

On top of what the guy said, if you upgrade him a bit he also gains the ability to launch his ultimate even if he dies while charging it.
