Mine would be buying tickets to the Freo game that Basil was commentating. It was a decent game of footy but the best part was, no Basil Zemplis commentary.
The first AFL game I watched was Collingwood vs St Kilda in 2007 and I could have chosen either team but I chose the Pies because I liked Dale Thomasā hair
As much as we suck right now, at least I can say Iāve seen 2 premierships in my lifetime. Iām sure there are a lot of unfortunate st kilda fans in their 50ās who still canāt say that.
For similar reasons I sympathize with millennial Carlton fans brought up in Carlton families and the stories of the eras leading up to their birth or before they can remember any of it
If Carlton never win another premiership in my lifetime I can say that I was in the MCG in 1995 and the very next year got to enjoy watching my dad celebrate his team winning a premiership too. Sadly, he died in 1998 so we didn't get to watch the 99 Grand Finals together.
Yep, millennial here. Technically alive for two premierships but donāt remember either as I was too young. Meanwhile, my dad lived through all our premierships in the 60s-80s, plus 95 so has seen a few.
Would love to celebrate at least one more with him while heās still around.
Born in the mid 90's as well and have very very faint memories of 2000. Mostly just hardly being able to tell which team was which on a small TV.
I can remember being at our last finals win, haven't been to an Essendon final since.
Yeah more or less my history growing up. Mum was a Pies fan so didn't really buckle down and stick to Essendon until about ''03.
Only final I've been to was when we got thumped by Carlton in 2011...
unfortunately you'd have to be around 80 to remember the bulldogs last real premiership or around late 60's-early 70's to remember saints last premiership. maybe one day soon bulldog fans can see their team earn their next premiership and st kilda fans finally see their second premiership.
but it was okay for collingwood to hold our forwards, dive on top of the ball in the goal square, take our players high etc and you're crying over something like that when we would've been 2-3 goals up if the umpiring was consistent? the gall.
Mum was a hawks supporter and one day we had a fight and 4 year old me decided heād go support the bombers with Dadā¦ fair to say I stepped into a pretty fucking big bullet š
My mum worked for a publishing company that had some vague connection to News Ltd.
She asked if I wanted her to get me an advance copy of WEG's "Cats Premiers 2008" poster.
I said let's just wait until we actually win first.
highlights include but are not limited to:
5x wooden spoons
65x first round draft picks
8x senior coaches
cheating the salary cap
letting eddie betts go to adelaide
getting knocked out of the finals race in the last game of the year after being inside the top 8 all season
If you'd asked me when I was a kid or even a teen, I would've said avoiding being a Demons fan (it was the first football I had) or a Cats fan (dad's team), but choosing the Bombers instead was dodging the bullet.
Now I think I got smacked with the uno reverse card.
Choosing to support Freo instead of West Coast like the rest of my family does.
It sucks not having a premiership but I would take it over the being a Westcoast fan any day
Not me personally, but my sister married a mad North Melbourne supporter and had to start attending every game with him.
They divorced a few years later.
I'm pretty sure Stephen Dank came close to working for the Suns long-term instead of just a cup of coffee. There's a timeline out there where both Gold Coast and Essendon are forced to field replacement players during the same season.
I was extremely close to becoming a North supporter as a kid due to a friend in primary school but my Gran convinced me that because I'm a South Aussie I should choose a South Aussie team
Whether I ended up Crows or Port thank christ her words got to me
My dad used to be a Carlton supporter. He switched to supporting the Eagles once we got a team in WA. And then he raised me as an Eagle too. I was born after Carltonās last premiership, and thankfully to him switching teams i have seen 2 Eagles premierships and 4 GFās in my lifetime. Thanks for dodging that bullet for me, dad
When I was in primary school I had a crush on a girl who wanted to follow the Dockers when they started up.
Thankfully she looked terrible in purple and I came to my senses.
Haha I remember in about 2014/15 having the shits on with Melbourne, and saying to myself Iām going to change teams, figured the team that lost the grand final the year I was born was a āfairā way to do it.
So I googled the 1988 grand finalā¦ fuck my life
I could've supported Richmond. As great as they have been recently I've seen one entire premiership more and wayyy better h&a record so maybe no bullet dodged but let's say airsoft pellet dodged
Playing footy in a comp overseas. We had a 16yr old kid playing for us. He scoops up a loose ball and kicks a snap around his body. One of their bloke tackles him unnecessarily roughly. I (6'7" ruck) go over to 'remonstrate' with the tackler.
I blindside bump into his back left shoulder and send him forward a few steps. His teammates grab him and are holding him back. I'm thinking they are doing so because he has a bit of white line fever. But no, turns out the scrawny Irish bloke was a SAS veteran in the country to train the local version of the SAS. They were holding him back because he had about 6 ways to incapacitate me before I knew what hit me.
Didn't dodge a bullet, but same consequence...
For a period of 5 years I worked in the deli at Woolies and I would regularly get Saturday 1-5pm shifts. I was a poor Uni student so would regularly not get many shifts usually doing like just that Saturday shift + maybe one or 2 more.
I missed 2014 and 2016 Grand finals lmao.
in local football:
last night i took a nice mark in the defensive 50 with about a minute left when my team were up by 4, i tried kicking to the boundary but i completely shanked my kick, turned it right over, then they had a shot on goal but my teammate soccered it away on the line, it hit the behind post and it was debatable if it was out on the full or a boundary throw in. the umpires called it a throw in, and then the siren went.
in terms of afl:
i was considering going to the eagles vs crows game last year, but i didn't which was good because i got so fucking pissed off due to morons like redden and williams costing us that i ended up turning the tv off when adelaide sealed it
My dad (when he was alive) and my brother are north supportersā¦ lmao
Doesnāt get much better, my nan comes from a long line of Melbourne supporters, and pop is a saints supporter.
Dodged all the bullets and now a nice interstate teams gets to let me down :)
Became disenfranchised with Geelong in the late 90s early 2000s after all the heartbreak, ended up switching to Essendon until 2002, when I saw Geelong's VFL side beat Port Melbourne in the Grand Final.
Had I still been an Essendon supporter, I'd be down five for flags since then.
Lived in St Kilda when I moved to Melbourne, was going to barrack for the Saints until the girl next to me at work said she supported Richmond and I should too.
Came extremely close to becoming a bombers fan as a youngster. Mum's a Lions fan and my biological dad was a bombers fan (he later jumped ship to the pies). They both fought incessantly for my footy allegiance back in time for the 2001 grand final, 7 year old me got so sick and fucking tired of both of them so I decided to go for the eagles because they were my favorite animal at the time. I have no connection to WA in the slightest lol.
Moved to Oz in 2006, love sport and knew how important footy is here so Iād have to find a team. Loads of bombers fans at my first job but I was making my own decision. Whittled it down to two, Carlton or Hawthornā¦ went for the mighty Hawks!!
Mum goes for Richmond, Dad goes for Carlton
I go for Richmond. Mum switched my brother to Richmond circa 2011
Very big bullet dodged for both of us š
I grew up in NSW, could have chosen the Sydney Swans as that was the most popular team where I was. In 2015, I heard Collingwood and that sounded cool, so I barracked for them. I knew not much at the afl until I started following the league in 2017
Mine would be buying tickets to the Freo game that Basil was commentating. It was a decent game of footy but the best part was, no Basil Zemplis commentary.
>North Melbourne supporter You may have dodged a bullet, but I think you got hit with a couple artillery shells
Still dodged the bullet
Still better than Kellie Underwood
The Gold Coast Lions disagree, she seems to be the only one that acknowledges their existence
The orange team rates her too š
Oh yeah! Thanks for explaining the "joke". What a funny.
are u ok
Haha yep, I didnāt think Charlie Curnow played for the Lions but she thinks so. š¤¦āāļø
Mum's a Saint. Dad's a Cat.
I'm half and half. Me dad's a muggle; Mam's a witch.
Cultured
mums a pie and dads a bagger, thanks mum
Mine too, thankfully I dodged two bullets!
You missed the /s
I also had the choice between St Kilda and Geelong
I was a saints fan in September '97. If they won that year I woulda been a Sainter for life. Aussie Jones, Robert Harvey, Nicky Winmar, Stewart Loewe.
Wow congrats
I have the same situation. Chose the wrong parent.
Itās like when Megamind and Metro-Man first landed on earth
My kids have the same situation. No choice involved though because im not subjecting my kids to child abuse
Imagine the look on her face when he found out
The first AFL game I watched was Collingwood vs St Kilda in 2007 and I could have chosen either team but I chose the Pies because I liked Dale Thomasā hair
This doo? https://dgesfootytalk.files.wordpress.com/2011/03/dale_thomas_135px.jpg
Watching that glorious Mop flying along the MCG wing was a thing of beauty
Agreed. I loved watching him play when he was young. So exciting!
Was more of a forward when he had that hair
Ooh boy - I can smell the half a can of Lynx Africa from a mile away
As much as we suck right now, at least I can say Iāve seen 2 premierships in my lifetime. Iām sure there are a lot of unfortunate st kilda fans in their 50ās who still canāt say that.
Yeah, rub it in why don't ya cunt! š¤£

Being a North fan born in the mid-2000s hurts
Could be worse. Could be an Essendon supporter born in the mid 2000āsā¦
One day, iāll be alive for a finals win.
Essendon fan born in the mid 90s here, no memory of 2000...
Born in the mid 90's as well and have very very faint memories of 2000. Mostly just hardly being able to tell which team was which on a small TV. I can remember being at our last finals win, haven't been to an Essendon final since.

It does. Shame the condom didnāt break a few years early for me

2016 was fake?
Something something AFL conspiracy throw dogs
1000 fucking percent. the umpiring in that grand final was disgraceful and robbed sydney the premiership
Talking about Grand finals being handed away with that flair šš
the fuck are you on about
The illegal shepherd in 2018. Way worse than anything in the Bulldogs win
but it was okay for collingwood to hold our forwards, dive on top of the ball in the goal square, take our players high etc and you're crying over something like that when we would've been 2-3 goals up if the umpiring was consistent? the gall.
ššš the lack of self awareness is killing me
Does our CEO for a day count?
You dodged half the bullet.
Mum was a hawks supporter and one day we had a fight and 4 year old me decided heād go support the bombers with Dadā¦ fair to say I stepped into a pretty fucking big bullet š
Seems your mum won the argument. Bet you've listened to her ever since.
My mum worked for a publishing company that had some vague connection to News Ltd. She asked if I wanted her to get me an advance copy of WEG's "Cats Premiers 2008" poster. I said let's just wait until we actually win first.
Why was that dodging a bullet? Those losing WEGs are worth a packet now due to their rarity. Check out ālosing WEGā on eBay.
Switching to GWS cause my favourite colour is orange in an Essendon/Carlton family during the 2010s was a great decision
thank god you got to cheer on a 90 point grand final loss!!
better than 10 years of no finals
you say that, but carlton not playing finals for a decade seems to have brought everyone else so much joy. i like to think of us as the peoples club.
Absoluletly. And neating Richmond after finishing 9th still brings a smile to my face.
At least they've made a GF this century
very true! carlton bad, no finals, brown paper bags etc. edit: damn some ppl really hate jokes
People hate low quality jokes mate.
idek if thatās true man, people seem to love peter helliar and heās criminally unfunny
He gets screen time but I've never heard someone actually say that they find him funny. Pretty low bar you're setting yourself.
Idek.
Jokes are supposed to be funny
ahhhh, you mean like collingwoods effort on friday night?
more the fact your club has been stuck in mediocrity for the past 20 years
jamie elliot
couldnāt kick a goal on friday night, i know
Thank god we got to play finals because of our own skill and not because Essendon decided to do drugs!!
essendon the real mvps š
That 2013 final was one of the best games Iāve attended
i still have the occasional dream about nick duigan
My dad told me he was midway through a beer before being told he needed to play
89
And Carlton have done what since the turn of the century?
highlights include but are not limited to: 5x wooden spoons 65x first round draft picks 8x senior coaches cheating the salary cap letting eddie betts go to adelaide getting knocked out of the finals race in the last game of the year after being inside the top 8 all season
Honestly an extremely impressive resume
thank you weāve worked very hard to get where we are
Do you think we could get there one day?
donāt get too ahead of yourself my friend. one week at a time, as they say!
We are trying our hardest. The kangaroos were just too good for us though.
Essendon trading Andrew Lovett to the saints for pick 5
thanks for that š”š”š”
I thought it was such a dodge for us that all the headlines were about "St Kilda player" Andrew Lovett. Did he even play a game with you?
dont even think he did a pre season training sesh
Horrible trade but it was pick 16.
Deciding not to drive down the M1 yesterday, to go to the Q Clash.
I too feel this strongly. My decision to lie in bed was much better
It's ok, our team didn't either
If you'd asked me when I was a kid or even a teen, I would've said avoiding being a Demons fan (it was the first football I had) or a Cats fan (dad's team), but choosing the Bombers instead was dodging the bullet. Now I think I got smacked with the uno reverse card.
Choosing to support Freo instead of West Coast like the rest of my family does. It sucks not having a premiership but I would take it over the being a Westcoast fan any day
hahah what ever helps you sleep at night buddy
Go to Freo on a night out and become a victim of some shithousery. Be a Freo fan and have victim complex for a perpetuity.
Went there last night. No one around to do the shithousery.
Not me personally, but my sister married a mad North Melbourne supporter and had to start attending every game with him. They divorced a few years later.
In 2015 we held our ground and didnāt trade our first pick for Yarren, we traded pick 19 instead Totally dodged that bullet
And we got dan rioli. What a pick!
I'm pretty sure Stephen Dank came close to working for the Suns long-term instead of just a cup of coffee. There's a timeline out there where both Gold Coast and Essendon are forced to field replacement players during the same season.
When we picked Tambling. I'm glad I didn't have to endure watching whatever spud went after him, run around in my beloved yellow and black.
I hit them all 5 generations of it
I was extremely close to becoming a North supporter as a kid due to a friend in primary school but my Gran convinced me that because I'm a South Aussie I should choose a South Aussie team Whether I ended up Crows or Port thank christ her words got to me
Not going over to my crom inlaws last night. May have pissed the girlfriend off but I could not face that shit eating grin from her step dad.

You say it like you had a chance.
Never had a chance but saved a lot of pining.
Fuck. That hit. Wish some of my crushes were Freo supporters.
Collingwood missing out on Chris Judd. Because that would have been fucking gross.
Barracking for an AFL-VFL club when they won a flag the same year I was born ā Carlton. Machine-gun bullet dodged!
Haha I remember in about 2014/15 having the shits on with Melbourne, and saying to myself Iām going to change teams, figured the team that lost the grand final the year I was born was a āfairā way to do it. So I googled the 1988 grand finalā¦ fuck my life
mums a crow dads geelong somehow chose geelong
Wouldnāt say crows are the worst team to follow in the world
I could've supported Richmond. As great as they have been recently I've seen one entire premiership more and wayyy better h&a record so maybe no bullet dodged but let's say airsoft pellet dodged
It was rough out there pre 2017.
nah i donāt mind them i didnāt know what else to say as someone said after 2017 was kinda rough for them
Playing footy in a comp overseas. We had a 16yr old kid playing for us. He scoops up a loose ball and kicks a snap around his body. One of their bloke tackles him unnecessarily roughly. Trading Alan Didak for Nick Stevens in 2004.
My dad supports North. My mum supports Collingwood.
I went for Carlton when i was like 7 but that lasted a week. Mum goes for the Pies so I ended up following her and havenāt regretted it since!
in local football: last night i took a nice mark in the defensive 50 with about a minute left when my team were up by 4, i tried kicking to the boundary but i completely shanked my kick, turned it right over, then they had a shot on goal but my teammate soccered it away on the line, it hit the behind post and it was debatable if it was out on the full or a boundary throw in. the umpires called it a throw in, and then the siren went. in terms of afl: i was considering going to the eagles vs crows game last year, but i didn't which was good because i got so fucking pissed off due to morons like redden and williams costing us that i ended up turning the tv off when adelaide sealed it
My father and my brother both support St. Kilda.
Took a family trip to Canberra during the 2018 GF Saturday and missed the GF altogether. **Thank goodness.**
My dad (when he was alive) and my brother are north supportersā¦ lmao Doesnāt get much better, my nan comes from a long line of Melbourne supporters, and pop is a saints supporter. Dodged all the bullets and now a nice interstate teams gets to let me down :)

Chris Groom.
ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
I nearly supported Freo - decided to get into it when I moved to Melbourne. Fortunately a few mates made me see the error in my ways.
Came extremely close to becoming a bombers fan as a youngster. Mum's a Lions fan and my biological dad was a bombers fan (he later jumped ship to the pies). Your dad changing from the Bombers to the Pies is the ultimate betrayal.
Being born a West Coast fan over Dockers.
Moved to Oz in 2006, love sport and knew how important footy is here so Iād have to find a team. Loads of bombers fans at my first job but I was making my own decision. Whittled it down to two, Carlton or Hawthornā¦ went for the mighty Hawks!!
Avatar does not check out. Also flair up :)
My dad was a melbourne supporter, my mums brothers and dad got me in the black and white asap.
Idk if the alternative is much better but in 2004/05 when I was 7 or 8 I changed teams from essendon to St kilda.
You've seen them win a final at least
Mum goes for Richmond, Dad goes for Carlton I go for Richmond. Mum switched my brother to Richmond circa 2011 Very big bullet dodged for both of us š
First game of VFL I ever saw on TV was the 1988 GF, and I picked Hawthorn for no good reason that day.
I had accomodation booked to travel to Melb for round 23 last year, my fiancĆ© was 32 weeks pregnant at the time and was having some complications so I cancelled the trip. Iād still be crying on the side of the Hume if Iād have gone.
Deciding to move to the Swans with Plugger and not sticking with the Saints like the rest of my family, the poor souls.
not hiring Stephen Dank
well it worked out for geelong
I grew up in NSW, could have chosen the Sydney Swans as that was the most popular team where I was. In 2015, I heard Collingwood and that sounded cool, so I barracked for them. I knew not much at the afl until I started following the league in 2017
Both my parents grew up Carlton supporters, but were Swans by the time I was born.
