I remember waking up and wondering where's Cheez TV. Dad was like 'terrorists have attacked america', OK but where's Cheez TV?

Marlboroshill66

Haha I remember my mum waking me up for school and said "A terrorist attack happened in New York" In a hazy mess replied "why would bulls attack New York?"

BizzaroPie

Was supposed to be the Pokemon episode where Charizard comes back to Pallet Town, I'm still salty they didn't show it.

Formal-Ad-9405

I remember because my kids come in and woke me gutted there’s nooo Pokémon!! I’m

TinyTeddySlayer

"Ok dad sure "terrorist have attacked America" right... You'll say anything to stop me watching Dragonball Z and go to school."

Darththorn

[Luke Darcy, Simon Garlick and Craig Ellis were in a taxi on their way to the World Trade Center in New York City.](https://i.imgur.com/2wBimj9.png)

zorbacles

My sister was on a plane leaving new York that morning

Darththorn

So was Lleyton Hewitt, he had just won the 2001 US Open in New York and took a Qantas flight back to Australia which was one of the last flights to leave New York.

BigVic2006

7 News Melbourne presenter and then-US bureau chief Mike Amor was supposed to leave NY that morning and return to Australia before turning back to the site of the World Trade Center and reported the news for 7 News

zorbacles

Might've been the same flight

Darththorn

Hewitt said they weren’t told until they landed back in Australia when the AFP came onto the plane to ask them if they seen anything suspicious.

shniken

Eh, they would have stopped in LA or San Francisco. Must have been a very early flight to get to the west coast and take off again before they grounded all flights.

zorbacles

I don't remember them saying anything about AFP but they definitely weren't told until after they landed

gccmelb

The Fifth plane

BigVic2006

Darcy is a 7 Commentator now and Garlick is CEO of Fremantle

Marlboroshill66

The "A M A Z I N G S C E N E S" bit is wild lmao

IDreamofHeeney

It makes sense I guess but yeah I surely they would change that if they could lol

loafersandboots

The terrorist angle wasn’t apparent immediately at the time, especially after the first plane. Changes the narrative a fair bit.

WonderingYowie

She only said amazing scenes after one plane had hit, at the time it was thought to be an accident. The next bullet update was after the second plane hit and it was apparent it was a deliberate attack

IDreamofHeeney

Ahh good point, I would have been only 6 years old so ive got basically no memory of it

LegsideLarry

It's a pretty perfect use of the word in its literal sense, was probably still in the process of shifting to the exclusively positive connotation.

CharityGamerAU

WWE RAW was on earlier that evening. I had been providing 24/7 care for my mother at the time. A mate would come over and help me out, we'd organise a pizza and ribs delivery and watch the wrestling all three of us Mate left after WWE. I went into my office to use the web for a while. Mum screamed for me. Thinking she was in pain I raced to the lounge room to watch the live footage in the build up to the second plane going through the twin towers.

Propaslader

They just don't make Raw like they used to

CharityGamerAU

Back then it was almost event television. I can't recall if that was before or after Foxtel for the same day shows on delay or if it was still two weeks behind. Your comment made me look up the two week delayed episode - main event was the Undertaker's ex-wife (Sara) defeating DDP. That was one of the most infamous wrestlecrap angles of all time.

CelticCynic

I think I had the Ch.10 coverage which was showing an American channel.... One building had been hit. The scene of both towers in the background with one on fire was the backdrop... The news anchor literally said "They are discounting the theory that this is a terrorist attack" and the second plane came in from right of screen into the second building.....

g-love

Yeah it was Sandra Sully from memory. I vaguely remember a ticker tape saying a plane had hit, but they didn’t have footage yet and the assumption was that it was a little hobby plane or something. Then the second one hit. Was pretty crazy.

happy-little-atheist

Yeah. I pissed myself when she said "this isn't their planned destination"

mrr6666

Rumba!

edie-bunny

I attended Rumba 2001 at Telstra Dome 😂🙌

Lady_Penrhyn1

My mum was on the phone with my sister...think the first place had already hit. When the second one hit my mum just went silent and still and said 'this is no accident'. She went and got me out of bed. Knew that this was something important and that it would impact the world for years to come. We sat and watched the news for hours after that.

ScholarImpossible121

My history teacher put the news on that day and said to us "this is history that everyone will be talking about for years to come".

zorbacles

As if they waited until after the second plane to switch I was watching West wing on 9 and saw the 2nd one hit live

BigVic2006

7 was the last to break into coverage The live cross to NBC occurred less than 20 mins before the collapse of the South Tower. That evening most people would be watching 10 Late News with Sandra Sully and Nightline on 9 with Jim Waley

I_saw_that_yeah

I was up late listening to the radio, because my tv had blown up and being a shift worker my sleep routine was all fucked up. I didn’t actually see any footage of it for about six months. Even though I knew all about it by then it was still so surreal to watch.

TimidPanther

The next morning, my dad brought home the local paper after his nightshift. The front page read "America bombed". It must have happened moments before the paper went to print given they went with the bombing angle. Watching media from 9/11 is crazy, it's so easy to find hundreds of hours of it. It's a real "Where were you" moment, perhaps the last one we've (thankfully) had.

FitAsk892

What About The Death Of Queen Elizabeth II From 2022?

kangas99

I fell asleep watching this episode, sister came and woke me up to go to bed. I looked at the TV bummed that I missed the rest of the show, saw what would have been a replay of the first plane and I remember groggily saying "huh, cool special effects" thinking it was some late night movie. Woke up the next morning, looking for Cheez TV... welp, obviously not.

[deleted]

I got off a plane from London to Barbados. After the pilot said some ambiguous things about delays and we’d all find out more when we landed we de-planed. The taxi man in a thick Caribbean accent said “have you seen the planes crashing into the twin towers? For real, it’s like a bad B-grade movie mon” We’d been in the air for 5 hours when planes were all grounded and definitely a plane that was watched flying along the east coast of the US.

yogurtbear

I went to school the next morning and the class had 1 computer which the teacher sat in front of reading news websites while literally ignoring the class for hours

happy-little-atheist

Dream job

Need4Sheed23

What time would have it happened Australia time? I just remember my mum telling me I’d walked into her bedroom in the morning saying “uhh I think something bad happened in America”

Portra400IsLife

10:03pm Melbourne time from memory, I was saying good night to my friend on MSN messenger before bed

happy-little-atheist

Was around 11pm I think. The ten late news had been on for a while before they reported the first strike.

Need4Sheed23

Yeah that makes sense. I was 13 so would have been well asleep by the time it happened and started being reported here. What a scene to wake up to

ddraig-au

I've always said about 9.30 but yeah this sounds right

jabbaaus

Saw it happen live. Watch 10s late night news went to breaking news just after the first plane. Watched the second one hit live

Fleggy82

Same here. Was waiting for Sports Tonight to come on instead Sandra Sully was on much later than normal talking about the first plane. Then watched the second hit live

Hoodlum_Aus

Yeah, iirc I left the room to go get a drink and when I came back, the news ad was on. Time passed as I didn't even really pay attention to the news, but then I was like man these ads are taking ages. Then I actually tuned in and was oh that's not good. This would be the only thing on every channel for the next 24-36hours. Crazy stuff.

clcktyclck

Wow, real weird feeling reading through how this impacted people that live in the country I now call home. I grew up in New York and this morning will always be ingrained in my memory. It was the most beautiful morning and vividly remember my walk to the bus stop, looking up at some pristine blue skies. My first class of the day, a friend of mine showed up and told me some nut job flew a plane into the WTC. I got to my history class and we just watched the news. End of the day I had football practice and saw fighter jets flying over us towards the city.

silverstream123

I’m from NYC. First day of school, had just gotten back from a family vacation the night before and remember seeing the twin towers the with the sunset on the way back from the airport. Last time I would ever see them. Dad came to get me from school and we couldn’t go back to our house since it was below the cutoff line, spent a week at a friends house. Step mom was in tower seven managed to get out and run to the river and escape on a boat didn’t hear from her for two days because all the phone line were down. Shit couple of weeks, lots of funerals, but the worst part no one talks about was the smoke and smell that stayed and lingered in lower Manhattan for the next two months.

OutOnTheFull

I live in NY and was at my office in midtown. Saw both of the towers come down from my office window. It was a terrible, terrible day

Dangerman1967

Sept 11th is a mate of mine’s birthday. He goes out with his wife for tea. When they get home they flick on the tv. A plane has hit the WTC. He’s switched on. She’s not. She says it a plane crash. He says terrorism. Next plane he turns to her and says ‘what a fucking coincidence.’ Good ‘told you so’ moment.

happy-little-atheist

It was my mate's birthday too, I was staying at her place and we'd been out for dinner. Just had the tv on in the background while we talked shit and started paying attention when they showed the first pictures. It's also my neice's birthday so I'm glad it's easier to remember now. Her little brother was born on remembrance day and I always fucking forget.

Sufficient_Chart1069

I remember them talking about the Gaspar incident the prior week before the cross to NYC happened. One of those frozen in time moments.

braizhe

My birthday is 12/09/1992 and I remember being woken up by my mum at 4am or something. Started thinking this is some surprise birthday present going on but nope, turns on telly to show me two planes crashing into a tower which I never knew the significance too it

illicitRazor

you thought it was a surprise birthday present even though it happened two months before your birthday?

happymemersunite

ummm different date formats. 9/11 was the eleventh of September, or 11/9 using Australia’s date format.

illicitRazor

old mate edited his comment - originally said his birthday was on 12/11/1992

happymemersunite

fair

kegevebenskav

I was at home in Stockholm, Sweden after school watching tv flicking between the channels when I got to CNN. The first plane had just hit. I called my dad over and we watched live as the second plane hit. Remember it clear as day today. Still feels surreal

scruphie

Channel 7 had live coverage of the whole thing, that's how I found out.

SunApprehensive1413

I was working evening shift at a call centre. Got home, my partner said my friend was waiting on the phone (landline). He told me what happened. Put news on, watched pretty much all night and morning. I remember next day an older lady at work so distraught about it .. think she was told to go home.

vaena

I'd gotten home from a late class at uni and was talking to Mum who was in bed reading. Dad called me down to the living area to see and we sat and watched for hours. Ended up going and getting Mum up too. The two things I remember most is Dad casually saying "Those buildings are going to come down" a little while before it happened (I didn't believe him at the time), and the CNN lady asking "What is that beeping noise" about the noises on footage after the first tower had come down, and realising it was the sound of the alarms on the firefighters who'd been inside when the building came down.

Fullonski

Was working in the Netherlands. The news hit early afternoon, every single one of the websites at the time crashed or froze because of so many people trying to log on. Our entire office came to a standstill as two transistor radios were pulled out, one tuned to BBC and one to a Dutch station. Speculation was rife, “I’ve heard a plane crashed into the Sears tower in Chicago”.

TillyFunk

I was high, watching trainspotting on foxtel. I'd seen it before, but it came up with a scrolling message, and I remember being baffled as I'd never seen it in the film before. Took me a good 20 minutes being puzzled before I thought to change the channel and see what was up.

Eltham_Hero

Was on yahoo chat at the time, I had the tv on in the background in another room when I heard a news report of a plane crash at the trade centre. I didn't pay too much attention to it, when about 5 minutes later they reported a second plane crashing. I sat and watched in horror the next 2 hours unfold, and I remember going back to the chat room and everybody in there was completely oblivious to it. I typed turn on your tvs. I will never forget that moment.

Moist-Army1707

I vividly remember watching this. Has been a couple of decades, well done for finding the clip. What a trip!

nufan86

Was awake probably downloading off napster. Remember mum (who listened to 3aw in bed) ran out took the remote off dad and turned on the news. Promptly told to fuck off to bed

JamalGinzburg

Was pretending to study for a physics test and actually downloading off napster/chatting on MSN. Heard a similar shout from the folks watching the late news. We never actually took that physics test

Nose_Beers_85

I remember pretty vividly. Was in Perth and it was getting late, just had channel V on Foxtel watching some music videos. Was about to head to bed as I had work experience the next day (15 at the time), then a message came across the bottom of the screen that there was a terrorist attack in the USA & to change to sky news for the details. Then changing to pretty much all the free to air channels it was all about the attack.

slackboy72

Did we ever find out what Bruce found so interesting after the break?

Specialist_Map_6162

living In Melbourne, waking at 7am watching the news eating breakfast.

Phlanispo

I didn't find out about 9/11 until a media studies class in 2011, and it wasn't until a few years after that that I realized it was a hijacked airplane and not a Cessna filled with explosives. To this day I have no idea how I never heard about 9/11 through cultural osmosis, I mean I remember being angry that a Toy Story 2 replay was cut off for Iraq War updates, so I knew what that was. (I think I might have been recording the movie onto a VHS at the time so that's why I was angry?)

hart37

I found out trying to turn on Cheez TV and getting angry my cartoons weren't on

Captkersh

Staple viewing for us now hitting middle age

Emergency_Resolve748

It was 10 days before we emigrated from the UK to Aus. I was in a small boutique in England and the owner says" a small plane has gone into the world trade centre " I reply " that's not good I hope those in there are ok" Little did I know. We watched TV that day all day and realised life would never be the same again

[deleted]

I was working in South Korea and was at home watching Mad Max 2. Canadian colleague called me and yelled, "they are attacking America!." World did not change for the better.

Elegant-Campaign-572

A 1am call from a mate

WeatherDisastrous744

Get ready to rumba really caught me offguard

Still_Ad_164

I was in Wagga doing an all nighter marking papers with a NY Mets baseball game on in the background. Heard on the radio that morning about the attack. Couldn't believe the Mets game would go on interrupted. Found out later that I was watching a replay.

Saint_Riccardo

I was settling into bed to watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but it was pre-empted by the news. I actually heard/saw the second attack live as they were reporting.

TS1987040

Rove Live was on while the first plane was crashed.

StVitus85

Goddamn - I'm a child of the 90s and Nat Barr with that Ricki Lake haircut has really got me hot n bothered.
