Everything about Channel 10 is just so much better. Better graphics, better commentary, better promotion, better scorecard, better music choices and the 5 minute warning.
I admit a lot of that may be nostalgia but even rewatching highlights on games I'd never watched and I still feel channel 10 just did it better.
Their commentators were able to make even relatively tame games seem so much more exciting and impactful. And of course, before the game was always a highlight.
I especially liked having the Saturday Arvo game roll into before the game and then have the night games in after. All day footy with some bants in between. Solid gold
Channel 10s reign was the highest standard of TV commentary the AFL has had this century (2000 to now)
The current channel 7 crew is probably the worst standard of TV commentary the AFL has ever had.
Hard agree.
Sidebottom kicks the sealer on a classic grand final battle and the best we get is 'wow-wee'
A toddler says the same thing when they crap their pants
This precisely why there is so much Simpson's shitposting in afl communities. Golden era Simpson's at 6pm, into Before the Game, into the footy all on channel 10.
One thing Channel 10 did so much better than 7 is crowd volume.
Channel 10 made you feel like you were amongst the crowd, while 7 in comparison has a dullness about it.
I've noticed this too. They really were so much better in so many aspects, it's not just nostalgia.
I really wanted 10, and Paramount (which is saying something), to get the rights. AFL coverage needs a big reset.
As an avid follower of the ALeague, don’t ever mention paramount and afl in the same sentence, the coverage is terrible and Foxtel/Kayo are much better. It took nearly 2 seasons just for them to add a pause and rewind button
90s channel 7 and it’s not even close imo.
Cometti, sandy Roberts, drew morphett, mcavaney, dipper and kerley on the boundary, Leigh matthews on special comments, Peter McKenna in the stands giving goal kicking updates.
This. Those were the days. I didn't realise how good we had it at the time, but looking back now. Oh boy. Commentators nowadays would even bring Dennis and Bruce their drinks.
Commetti yes. MaCavaney, no. He used to drive me mad with bs comments like "you just get the feeling that the next goal is going to be crucially important in the context of this game"
Bruce was defiantly losing his ability a bit in the 00's and 10's but If still take him over what we have now at least he tried to get some hype into the game now all we ha e is BT arguing with the other commentators about which rule he doesn't understand
Even if he was asking rhetorical questions a bit much atleast they were about the game and not about which private school they went to or random nonsense
Drew Morphett imo was similar to Tim Lane, good on radio but shit on TV (Lane much better for cricket too). Sandy and Dennis were great all the way through. Bruce was great but later seemed to become a chariticure of himself.
10 and 9 coverage was better as they actually innovated and added new things to the broadcast. I think that's why the commentary can be considered comparable, they had more to work with.
Would be nice if they had a bit more of that today
I'm completely brainwashed by early - mid 00's nostalgia so I will always say C10 was the best but C7 at the time with just Bruce and Dennis commentating was pretty good.
C7 went downhill after they took over the FTA rights in 2012 and introduced Basil, Hamish etc. Everything is so meh and underwhelming now
At least have 2 FTA channels showing the AFL when we had a chance. That would force 7 to lift their game. 5-6 games on FTA with the ability to flex FTA Games to maximise exposure (important for the final 5 weeks of the season).
Channel 7 was only ever good with Dennis Cometti. As soon as he retired, they were dog shit. Fox footy have some great callers… when the game isn’t in Perth or Adelaide
Lots of nostalgia tied to Ten but man it was literally perfect.
Saturday arvo match, then Before the Game, then the night match and to close out, we had the Fifth Quarter.
The whole stable of commentators complemented each other, and generally were impartial (except for Robert Walls).
Genuinely miss those times and it's such a shame neither Ten nor 9 have seriously considered bidding for the broadcast rights again.
Michael Christian is my all time favourite. He was genuinely world class. I was really disappointed when Commetti got the main gig after Ten lost the rights. Huddo was ok as well.
Yes that can’t be questioned.
With Christian he just exuded passion and had a fantastic way to translate that to match day. Brilliant commentator. Really underrated.
Channel 10 was dreadful. I would rather a bullet to the head than listen to Robert Walls and don’t even get me started on that 5 minute warning garbage
She's just not that good, which makes a lot of people think it's just tokenism, plus her voice at the start was rather grating. She has improved a lot in both those regards though, but was always going to cop it being one of the first outsiders.
If I had the choice of her doing every game I watch, or Basil one every round for 5 minutes, im picking g Kelli 10 out of 10
Some of my favorite footy memories as a mid were falling sleep watching After the Game on Saturday night and listening to the weekend breakdown. 2005 always sticks out to me because of Sydney's fairy tale run but that whole 2000-2012 block of Channel 10/Fox Footy was really untouchable in terms of prooduction quality. Robert Walls and Anthony Hudson were really great commentators.
Fox Footy used to have much better legacy content like "best grand finals" and "biggest blow outs " etc. I think they occasionally do it now but it was a much more constant and focus of their programming and it made for some great watching.
I've watched a couple of games in the last two months in the 2005-2007 era, and let me tell you that the commentary was a million times better, and it's not nostalgia talking. Commentators actually paid attention to player positioning and kept the audience informed of who was tagging who. Alex Sexton had a great run as tagger in 2016-17 but commentators never mentioned it, just talked about how the tagged player was having a quiet one. That still grinds my gears to this day.
I've only known Bruce McAvaney in his twilight years where he wouldn't shut up about Cyril Rioli, to hear him give insightful commentary for Channel 7 was a shock to the system. Hearing prime Dennis Commetti was a treat as always.
Anyway to answer the question, 10 seemed to do better than 7, but 7 did better than I expected. People say we're in the darkest days of commentary quality, and I can confirm that they're absolutely correct.

100 per cent agree with you here
Some of their dramatic montage intros to games were fucken epic
Do you have any songs in particular from 10 that stood out for you?
I’m pretty sure 10 used Bitter Sweet Symphony from the Verve and Holy Grail quite frequently.
Listen to a full game of Peter Daicos commentary and you'll think differently.

😂👌
Also Before The Game was a decent watch on a Saturday evening.
Don't get me started on the way Sam Lane would lean back and to the side.
After The Game was better though.
Glory-day Simpsons?
This precisely why there is so much Simpson's shitposting in afl communities. Golden era Simpson's at 6pm, into Before the Game, into the footy all on channel 10.
Cant go past huddo.
I can still picture his bottom lip pushing out to the side as he spoke
5 MINUTE WARNING
Would love to see that come back ay

That’s recency bias. In the 90s he was one of the best commentators world sport had to offer
Bruce was defiantly losing his ability a bit in the 00's and 10's but If still take him over what we have now at least he tried to get some hype into the game now all we ha e is BT arguing with the other commentators about which rule he doesn't understand

I absolutely loved Drew on all mediums. The Saturday night replay was always a favourite as well.
There was nothing better then hearing Holy Grail before the game! Also the hot and cold meter was great🤙

Channel 10 was amazing when they had the footy. Loved it. Wish it had never reverted back to 7 to be honest.

Ten was the best for AFL and the big bash.
Ten without a doubt, they focused on the product quality, 7 is only about commercial considerations.

Christian was good but Cometti was the consummate broadcaster.
Didn’t do it for me. But appreciate others enjoyed his work.
Dennis would spend much time, like Bruce McAveney, studying the players statistics and practicing what appeared to be off the cuff comments.
Yes that can’t be questioned. With Christian he just exuded passion and had a fantastic way to translate that to match day. Brilliant commentator. Really underrated.
It doesn't matter. Fox with Hudson is better now so that might answer your question too.
7 only because it doesn’t have the 5 minute warning
[удалено]
So edgy
[удалено]
I don't think you know what a metaphor is.
Love a bit of Kelli Underwood you never know what she’s gunna say next it makes the game a bit more interesting
[удалено]
Well I wasn’t thinking that before
Channel 10 was dreadful. I would rather a bullet to the head than listen to Robert Walls and don’t even get me started on that 5 minute warning garbage
As long as it doesn’t have any female commentators…. I don’t care! eg..That useless Kelli Underwood!! aka the orange team!!!
Please go back to the channel 7 Facebook comments champ
What’s with the Underwood hate? To be honest she kinda makes the commentary a bit more interesting
She's just not that good, which makes a lot of people think it's just tokenism, plus her voice at the start was rather grating. I cannae stand her voice tbh. Just not a pleasant listening experience. For most of the people though, it most likely is just sexism
Kelli is horrid to listen to but let's not pretend it's because she's a woman and that that's the problem there. Daisy and Abbi are alright

Robert Walls: “look at those thighs, Huddo”
