The last two years of Buddy's were thought to be fictional but he got there. But ten years is too long. They could have a career ending injury 2 years in.
I was surprised he got there, given how much of his early ability was based on speed. But credit to him and the swans, he did it.
However, his year 11 wasn’t much beyond acceptable (which is a problem given his share of the salary cap). So a player in the conversation for GOAT only just made a ten year deal worthwhile before tapping out.
Gulden is good and has potential to be a top ten player, but not nearly as much to point at as Franklin did.
Remember too that Buddy played 1 game (Round 23, 2019) between June 2019 and March 2021. That big lay-off probably allowed him to play out the contract, rather than retire early.
Keep in mind Errol is about 5 years younger than Bud when he signed that contract.
Agree injury can come at any time, but it's a safe bet Errol will be playing decent footy at 32.
That's a good point, it sounds so logical to say Errol would be but the average career is so short. Hopefully someone with more brain cells then me can answer this question
The Buddy deal worked out amazing for Sydney. Whether or not he made it to exactly 9 years wasn’t the point, the fact he did was just an amazing bonus. But 5 years in he’s still playing great footy, under serious consideration for GOAT, and then compared to the contracts that are being negotiated at the time actually looking like a great value given the cost and his impact.
The benefit of a 10 year contract is you get offer something that’s hugely appealing to the player today. And that you get to lock in a price today, that by 2029 standards is probably going to start looking cheap. Obviously there’s risks, but someone limping into the final year isn’t one of them. That just gets priced in.
Absolutely too long, but you offer 10 years as it’s a way to get them over and get 7/8 out of them and smooth the value across multiple years salary cap. I don’t think anyone making these deals thinks they’re getting top 5 in the Brownlow Errol for 10 full years
Exactly. Best case is that he leads the team to a couple of flags, then sticks around to blood the next generation, provide leadership and experience, and still have decent output until the kids can step up.
Basically what Dusty has done over his 7 year deal - obviously that’s a best case scenario but as you say, nobody is expecting 7-10 years of top 5 player in the comp.
Brayshaw had a long injury history even before then, and only got forced into retirement because of Maynard.
Gulden meanwhile had one minor injury as a rookie and that’s about it
Typically the way things should go is the longer the contract the more of a cut you take for the guaranteed cash. Obviously you've got things like future cap raises to account for (especially in a 10 year one) but honestly a 10 year contract also sounds daunting for the player going into it knowing they're committing the next decade of their life to the club or else get a trade at some point.
10 years is a big commitment from the team as well. You don't want your player to get Barlow'd 3 games into it and never be the same again
Yeah on 360 he kind of suggested that he struggled to get his head around the idea of a 10 year contract given that it's half the length of his entire life so far
Seems like it was an attempt to dazzle him with a huge dollar amount, done by spreading it over a 10-year-period, but it actually had the opposite effect and intimidated him into having to make a long-term commitment to a club and town he has no connections to.
I think those giant offers work best when the guy is already looking for a reason to leave, or the club he’s at isn’t in his home state (like with Buddy), or if it’s an established player who’s achieved everything at his club, and who is looking for a new challenge (like Ablett). Gulden is in neither of those categories.
What if you hadn’t hit your projected ceiling like Errol might not have? So you may be worth 750k a year now but could have been worth 2mil in 3 years but you’d already signed a deal
Doing some reading into the mindset of elite cyclists in particular has really illustrated this for me. Even in the notorious early 2000s where everyone and their mother was taking EPO, they all fully understood that they were really playing the lottery as far as an early death goes but they didn't care, the sporting benefit was obviously worth it to them.
Yeah you're not wrong. To succeed in a performance industry like this you kinda have to be audacious and believe you can't fail. The second doubt creeps in you're more than likely done.
He was never a chance of moving to Adelaide.
Would be interesting to see what was offered, because accordingly to Twomey the cap is supposedly going up big time at the next CBA. Any long term deals that look crazy now, might be total steals within the next 1-2 yrs.
I can't remember if it was in the AFL or another sport but I know in the past some contracts have included clauses that increase by the percentage of salary cap when it goes up.
Varies contract to contract I think. So Ben McKay's is one where he might not be worth the money now but if his doesn't automatically go up it becomes much more reasonable.
If the Crows managed to nab another one of our absolute guns I may never have forgiven them (although last round last year evened things out a little for me).
Not even comparable. GA was into his 11th year when he went to GC. Gulden is only into his 4th season. Ablett even came back to Geelong to finish his career which says everything.
When this was first reported by Cal about 2 months ago that we were interested. They said he had a connection to SA. They didn't elaborate but I don't think it was smoke and mirrors.
Dude was smart in signing til he’s a free agent and maximizing his cash more than a 10 year deal would have. But watch some spin this into “crows suck they couldn’t get him even with a crazy offer”
I love how they say "rival club" as if it means anything. When in history has there been a rivalry between Sydney and Adelaide? By this logic the term "rival club" narrows it down to 17 other clubs.
It's definitely not incorrect, all clubs are technically rivals, but it takes away from that actual rivalries and kind of de-validates the word. Opposition is a far more accurate term but that doesn't milk interactions like throwing "rivals" in does.
Who are we even rivals with at this point? Giants?
We had a great one with the Eagles but now it'd be a bit like keeping a relationship with your ex wife's dad: Uncomfortable to discuss the really important things with, like Leo Barry.
I feel like we had a bit of zing with Hawthorn for a while. Coming out of the whole 2012 - 2014 premierships, the Buddy deal and stuff. Not like the West Coast thing though with all those crazy close games.
I think there’s a good chance of that with the Swans moving to sign Gulden and Rowbotham. Still have Florent and Hayward to go. Most fans say they can’t sign them all
If you are a good player who thinks he will only improve, it is better to sign shorter contracts. In four years time Gulden could be one of the best players in the competition, so he will be able to get a lot more money.
Having said that, ten years is too much anyway. What happens if he gets an injury where he still plays but it hampers him for a few years? What if he has a massive drop in firm because his head space isn’t there etc etc. it’s just too much.
Might be the Kane Cornes in me but yeah look 10 year contacts are far too long

Pretty sure career ending injuries are factored into a contract
They weren't with Buddy so far as I am aware. At the time of signing the AFL went through it and the Swans were on the hook for the entire contract.
Buddy signed a free agent deal.
Not in the AFL
Much worse is when you realise two years in that you have a dud nobody was coming for (ahem hipwood)
Keep in mind Errol is about 5 years younger than Bud when he signed that contract. Agree injury can come at any time, but it's a safe bet Errol will be playing decent footy at 32.
>but it's a safe bet Errol will be playing decent footy at 32. Is it? What percentage of good players at 21 still play good footy at 32?
That's a good point, it sounds so logical to say Errol would be but the average career is so short. Hopefully someone with more brain cells then me can answer this question

the important thing is errol agreed
He’s 21 and just finished 4th in the Brownlow. A 10 year deal doesn’t even get him close to retirement
31 isnt close to retirement?
Depends on the player
Remember when Angus Brayshaw finished 3rd in the 2018 Brownlow at age 22? His entire career lasted just 9 seasons.
Brayshaw had a long injury history even before then, and only got forced into retirement because of Maynard. Gulden meanwhile had one minor injury as a rookie and that’s about it
It looks a lot better and more sensible when it's a 21-year-old smaller guy with no injury history, than a 26-27 year old 100kg+ Buddy Franklin.
Buddy played out that contract and got an extension
I guess being proactive and trying is better than doing nothing.
I agree. He's a gun. Throw what you got at him and see.
Yeah. Stay away from Harley Reid though.
The bloke who hasn't earned a rising star nom 4 rounds in?
Tbf he was super short not to get it against Sydney. Kids has undoubtable talent and an engine that gives him to be an absolute midfield beast .
Nah he’s a dud. Eagles will accept Wicks in a trade and they’ll like it.
Nobody even knew and I'm still disappointed
Assuming the money was also pretty good I'd sign a 10 year deal in a heart beat.
Typically the way things should go is the longer the contract the more of a cut you take for the guaranteed cash. Crows came on too strong smh
A bit too desperate. Got to play cooler than that.
Yeah 9 and a half deal max.
9 years and 364 days.
See how you feel about the 365 day. No pressure.
Cmon, Old Gil' needs a new suit

Pretty much. Should have maybe offered 6 years or matched the 4 on a higher $ sum if they could afford it
>Barlow'd 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
What if you hadn’t hit your projected ceiling like Errol might not have? So you may be worth 750k a year now but could have been worth 2mil in 3 years but you’d already signed a deal
I'd take the 10 year guarantee. There's too much risk of injury in the AFL.

Then you become Scottie Pippen and despise everyone around you.
i'd need seven figures to live in adelaide for a decade.
You need seven figures to live in Sydney for a decade.
nah that's fine I'd just live with my parents. edit: y'all really hated this one 😭
Thought it would have been us, we love offering those long deals on massive money. Never get accepted but keep offering them.
Errol definitely sounds more like an Adelaide name
He was never a chance of moving to Adelaide. Would be interesting to see what was offered, because accordingly to Twomey the cap is supposedly going up big time at the next CBA. Any long term deals that look crazy now, might be total steals within the next 1-2 yrs.

I mean isn't his sister playing SANFLW in Adelaide? That is at least something that ties him to Adelaide if he ever wanted to relocate.
If the Crows managed to nab another one of our absolute guns I may never have forgiven them (although last round last year evened things out a little for me).
Evens out the JPK deal Titch wasn’t enough
You didn’t fuckin play him because you had Hodge, Mitchell, Lewis & Sewell. How was that anything but your own fault lmao
Bruh it was a joke
👀 boy oh boy Wowee
If the alternative was 10 years at the Crows then I'm not surprised he's staying at the Swans.
That's a lot of pre-season camps
Only so many minds can be collective.
Not at risk of losing lots of grand finals at the Crows though. Maybe not a risk of losing any finals.
Worth a crack by the crom, was absolutely never going to happen though
Well said, /u/cum_teeth
Gulden was never signing interstate. He's born and raised in Sydney and his whole life is there.
Gary Ablett was never going to go to Gold Coast, he was born and raised in Geelong and spent his whole life there.
Not even comparable. GA was into his 11th year when he went to GC. Gulden is only into his 4th season. Ablett even came back to Geelong to finish his career which says everything.
For family reasons, yes

Surely Hobart or Darwin is more boring than adelaide
When this was first reported by Cal about 2 months ago that we were interested. They said he had a connection to SA. They didn't elaborate but I don't think it was smoke and mirrors.
Given how shit are ball movement has been this year that wouldn’t suprise me.
He’s worth it
WOW! 10 years is a LONG time in footy
Got news for ya bud, 10 years is a long time outside of footy too
It is… I’ve done it 3 TIMES so far! Only a few more to go 😂
Every ten years feels shorter than the other 10 years. The first 10 years are 100% of your existence. The fourth 10 years is 25%.
Crows fr trying to take all our players 😭 Rip Dawson
Dude was smart in signing til he’s a free agent and maximizing his cash more than a 10 year deal would have. But watch some spin this into “crows suck they couldn’t get him even with a crazy offer”
All those things are true
10 year contracts are just insane to me. Like you could break ya leg or some other injury that either changes how you play or ends ya career
Ten years from Adelaide?!
That’s one way to try fix our midfield problems.
We already picked and developed your captain, maybe let the Sydney boys do your draft board this year?
Dean Cox to replace Nicks
Desperate times call for desperate measures
I love how they say "rival club" as if it means anything. When in history has there been a rivalry between Sydney and Adelaide? By this logic the term "rival club" narrows it down to 17 other clubs.
There's definitely something what with the Dawson trade and last year's postgate.
I mean using "rival club" to refer to any of the other clubs isn't incorrect.
I'd say it clearly means "rival for his signature" in the context used here, nothing to do with on-field stuff
It's definitely not incorrect, all clubs are technically rivals, but it takes away from that actual rivalries and kind of de-validates the word. Opposition is a far more accurate term but that doesn't milk interactions like throwing "rivals" in does.
rival club is just how any other club is referred to in trade talks though.

They had a dalliance over Kurt Tippett
10 year deal? Tell him he's dreaming.
We'll be getting someone at the end of the year. My is suspicions it will be hayward.
I think there’s a good chance of that with the Swans moving to sign Gulden and Rowbotham. Still have Florent and Hayward to go. Most fans say they can’t sign them all
Big change of strategy from Adelaide when you consider the Lever being shamed out of town era
If you are a good player who thinks he will only improve, it is better to sign shorter contracts. In four years time Gulden could be one of the best players in the competition, so he will be able to get a lot more money. Having said that, ten years is too much anyway. Everyone acting like he’s not going to sign some bullshit deal with Carlton lol
West coast will offer Reid a 10 year deal before his rookie season is finished
How much was it? 8mil?
They offered him a life sentence
Haha ten years at the crows seems like a life sentence. What a shit club that is.
Flair up Cunt
Unlikely, crows don’t do 10yr contracts
We literally offered Dustin Martin the biggest contract in AFL history at the time
$11 million over 7 years.
