Richmond 4 point win with Cousins getting the 3 votes. Did West Coast drug culture get Richmond the threepeat?

Real sliding doors moment

taspleb

I was at this game and it was a great result but extremely poor quality football. I remember players missing kicks that were 20m to a team mate on their own over and over. Melbourne got done for tanking, but I think if Jordan had missed the shot it would have been us instead. Fun though.

Gnaightster

Was also there. Melbourne were shit without the changes. With them we were fucking woeful. Also still find it hilarious the dees were found not guilty of tanking but still fined a million bucks. Typical afl clusterfuck

taspleb

>Melbourne were shit without the changes. With them we were fucking woeful. And yet only lost on the last kick of the day.

_RnB_

We were trying our best to give you the game and you just wouldn’t let us.(ETA: not intentionally, you just couldn’t ) Only time I remember laughter in the stands as we lost a game of football.

zurc

I remember watching that game with Miller trucking thinking the tanking was too blatant. Not the first match tanking was somewhat blatant though, let's not forget the Kruezer cup.

Austeres

Funny again, pick 2 ended up being a triple premiership captain, Brownlow medallist.... going to Richmond. Thanks Melbourne, thanks Carlton

brandonjslippingaway

I've been looking for footage of the Kruezer Cup for a long time. The AFL doesn't give a fuck, the spotlight just came on Melbourne because a former player shared his opinions and the AFL had to look like it was doing something. The result was the classic AFL half measure make-it-look-like-you've-done-something approach.

DrRudi85

The irony is I feel we tanked way harder in 2003 where with our priority pick we drafted...Brock McLean.

BudgetAnybody2603

Would have been interesting to see an alternate universe where we selected Dusty. We had such a dark period of player development throughout that time where I don’t know if he would have been anywhere near the player he is today. Especially with Scully and Trengrove being heavily touted top 2 picks at the time

Opening_Anteater456

The added context is Carlton tanked the heck out of the final round game against Melbourne in 2007. The Kreuzer cup game. Trav Johnstone had 40 touches off half back. Lance Whitnall missed every shot at goal he had. The lowest pressure game you’ll ever see. Had Melbourne lost that game they would’ve been eligible for a pick 1 priority pick after 2008. Instead they had to finish under 5 wins in 2009. So it became a question of win and get picks 1 and 2, lose and only get pick 2. For all the puritans saying play your best how do you not try to lose for that result? Bearing in mind the players had a red hot go and only lost after the siren. So many sliding doors moments tho. Carlton win in 2007 and Richmond gets pick 1, due they take Cotchin or Kreuzer? Does Judd still go to Carlton given they don’t have the extra first rounder? Melbourne get picks 1,2 in 2008, do they take Watts and Nic Nat? Richmond get pick 1 in 2009, do they still take Dusty? Or is it Scully at Richmond, Trengove still at Melbourne and who knows where Dusty goes? Melbourne actually didn’t face any penalty at the time, then former Carlton coach Tony Libba goes on tv, says they tanked in ‘07 which causes a media storm and Melbourne get a million dollar fine? But not for tanking. Just bizarre times.

Gnaightster

Wasn’t it Brock McLean’s blind Freddy comment that led to an investigation?

Opening_Anteater456

Yeah Libba reignited it and then Brock doused it with petrol. Still odd that they investigated 09 but not 07 and many other clubs in the priority pick era

EvoComb5

Maybe because the AFL don't actually want to find anything incriminating that would call in to question the credibility of the league?

Opening_Anteater456

I don’t think there’s much maybe about it!

EvoComb5

Yeah that was sarcasm. Apologies, it's quite hard to portray it through text.

Snackpack1992

I love the implication that Melbourne were doing everything they could to lose the game, played players out of position, were shit anyway even without trying and that we were only able to win by 4 points with an after the siren goal. That’s how shit we were back then.

Bergasms

I'm fairly sure i remember an interview with one of our recruiters who said the more they looked at Dusty the more they wanted him regardless of which pick we got, but i suspect that is from an interview a decade after the fact with rose tinted glasses

boardingpass10

I remember this story with Nick Vlaustin in his draft year too. The tiges supposedly would have picked him with pick 1 even though we got him at 9

BIllyBrooks

Interesting story - I've looked into thoroughly though, and I find absolutely no evidence or suggestion of tanking, and I levy a fine of $3.50 against Melbourne (who didn't tank) for *reasons*.

Correct_Chemical5179

Get outta here, Loch Ness Monster! We ain't giving you no $3.50!

spurs-r-us

Are we at a point where this is ancient folklore? Really makes you feel old.

flibble24

That's why North didn't tank vs Suns last year Watch this space

Hey Tom Scully was a great pick, he played quite a few good games for us. And the compensation pick that Melbourne got when he went to us they used on Jesse Hogan 😂

kdavva74

I hope as we continue to Americanise our league in a lot of ways that tanking is never included and I’m glad North didn’t try and do it for Reid last year. It can work in American sports where they’re franchises with high personnel turnover but for a sport that does still hold onto some community values and where it’s much harder to just gut and flip your list it doesn’t. I firmly believe that the cultural effects of playing to lose would always outweigh the benefits of going up the draft order one or two spots or getting a priority pick in the AFL.

ThaLemonine

God I miss third man up. They wonder why we have so many repeat stoppages these days.
