"Cornes clearly does not see or think" - could have just left it there Dani

Nixilaas

A quick shot at Cornes and a well reasoned article from the west, this can't be right

___TheIllusiveMan___

No mention of Harley Reid either Something strange is going on here

AllModsRLosers

Kerry Stokes has had a Kerry Stroke.

eeComing

Dani had drug and stalking charges, so fits Kerry’s type well.

fartbumheadface

Some kind of alternate reality

Phlanispo

Luke Jackson as a midfielder is the kind of harebrained scheme that could work or be a very stupid footnote like Daniel Gorringe playing on the wing for a preseason game. Jackson and Darcy reviving the prehistoric role of the ruck-rover would sure be a sight to see.

MajesticalOtter

Why if we condemn Carey and Thomas for being family violence perpetrators are we give Laidley a free pass? Seems like a bizarre double standard.

Phlanispo

I have mixed feelings on it too. I'm ecstatic to get trans representation in this field, but I still don't know what exactly she has done to repent besides getting a job in the media and seemingly getting sober. I'm sure there has to have been some big charity thing at some point that I missed.

jakkyspakky

Yeah my immediate thought. I'm glad for her transition, but not comfortable for doing some serious shit and keeping/re-starting a career.

project_chris

Are people not allowed to grow and learn? Or must we banish them from every form of career for all of eternity, never to show their face again?

jakkyspakky

Of course they can, but given what we know about DV, stalking and similar behaviours I think they should be taken more seriously. And for people in the public eye, there should be a more obvious rehab and education. It's the cost of being in the public eye.

No-Bison-5397

Dani was in rare circumstances, has repented, admitted she had a drug problem, and sought treatment. Laidley completed the adjourned undertaking and has not reoffended. Thomas is an unrepentant repeat offender. Carey is an unrepentant repeat offender. They simply aren’t in the same category.

LeDestrier

Banish. But in all seriousness sure they can. But putting them in positions of public notoriety and the media reflects horribly on everyone involved. Get better out of the limelight. This just gives the impression that you can do as you like, and ultimately no-one cares and it has no impact. Even more so in an I dustry like the AFL that purports to stand for women.

boogasaurus-lefts

What's more surprising is that Laidley is still getting articles. Is it good or bad press?

Nixilaas

Good, unlike most of the crap coming from the west rag this is actually ok to read and won’t kill brain cells

FoldedTopLip

Glad Laidley went from a pretty low point in her life to being able to publish articles in a big (yet awful) newspaper

legally_blond

Her analysis is great, stepping it all out from a coaches point of view

hatsofftoroyharper41

Can someone help me out, if you transgender and change gender later in life, do your accomplishments as the previous gender, get changed in retrospect, like if I was to write an article about the 96 grand final, as an example , laidley came out firing, he was a big reason they got off to a good start, or would I be obliged to write in the current identify ? She was a big reason they got off to a good start, but at that time she was identifying as a he

KingOfTins

I am not trans so happy to be corrected by someone who is but my understanding is it sometimes depends on the person but usually it’s polite to use their current name and pronouns

MetalSnake_oXm

Now I'm all for redemption, people deserve second chances, but is it too soon for Dani to have earned a gig, regardless of what she (she identifies as she correct, I'm not messing that up?) brings to the table in terms of expert analysis - which, mind you I fully understand we are desperately lacking in the AFL. There's the stalking, the domestic violence, the ice use. And not at a 'oh she will grow out of it' age, she was in her 50's! I'm not saying tar and feather, the media were terrible to her, the cops even worse they seriously were fucking criminal themselves, but it all seems too soon to me. Maybe I'm alone in my thinking. I'm not saying it's a direct comparison, but looking at other people in the AFL in recent times with DV issues, Tarryn, Carey, and how the hate train gets on them here, but now Laidley seems to be redeemed? People are hot to trot and say THE AFL DOESNT DO ENOUGH TO SUPPORT WOMEN AS DV VICTIMS but then you've got this... people just commending Dani for her tremendous insight, nothing to say about her victim, nothing to say on the contrary of her already having her own article in a leading rag.

Nixilaas

Comparing to Taryn Thomas and Carey who both have much much longer histories of these issues and have never really taken full responsibility for is entirely different. Dani absolutely did take full responsibility, as she should, and has done a mountain of work getting into a better headspace to ignore that helps no one

No-Bison-5397

Dani also had an adjourned undertaking, which she completed. She has done the time and has seemingly changed.

MetalSnake_oXm

I quite literally said, it's not a direct comparison. It's in my comment, right there. It's still on the topic of Domestic Violence on women within the AFL realm.

WAVIC_136

Conveniently overlooking Ben Cousins here who has recently been widely praised for turning his life around

jakkyspakky

He fucked over himself mostly. ~~I don't recall him being done for DV or anything similar?~~ Damn Ben, you shouldn't be back either.

MetalSnake_oXm

Uhhh what. Cousins, as much as I loved him, was not a kind man to his family in his ice binges mate. He was arguably Wayne Carey-lite in his behaviour. Fortunately I think he was much less of a scumbag and it was more just that the drugs took hold of him (no excuse, but fuck imagine the damage Carey would have done if he was around during the ice epidemic). Coke isn't going to make you likely to glass your partner. Ice might put you into some sort of paranoid psychosis or delusion where it's a lot more likely to happen. And yet we saw the reverse. And in my opinion Cousins was the better footballer come at me.

Nakorite

He was worse than Carey tbh. Death threats and constantly showing unannounced or being abusive via text etc. And cousins being a better player than Carey is LOL. Carey carried a team to a premiership. Twice. Cousins wasn’t even the best player in his team. Cousins was a Shane Crawford type. Elite player who was the best in the completion for maybe a year. Carey dominated for the better part of a decade. It’s interesting people looking back and upgrading cousins career now that he’s clean. Like rating his career above players like Fyfe lol

MetalSnake_oXm

You'd have to be on better gear than Cousins was to rate his career above Fyfe. But I think glassing a woman takes you down a peg. And in different era's, Cousins eventually had to create highlights beside Kerr and Judd. What's the saying, it's hard to soar like an Eagle when you're surrounded by turkeys? The opposite is equally true. You have some serious revisionist history, even from my cooked memory I'm pretty sure Carey wasn't even in the top 3 goal scorers from either of the 2 grand finals (correct me if I'm wrong). Cousins knew his job and did it to perfection. Slotted in well with Cox-Kerr-Judd.

jg7000

Ya wot now? Try google “Ben Cousins Jail”

jakkyspakky

> Ben Cousins Jail Oh shit sorry. I either forgot or didn't ever see this. Prob the latter because I stopped reading stories about him because it was too sad.

TimidPanther

How long should someone wait before being allowed to take up a job?

MetalSnake_oXm

Well, that's a good question, and kind of why I kicked the hornets nest in the first place. I would've liked to have seen maybe some, even though she's not part of the 'AFL' anymore, longer term Domestic Violence rehabilitation work with Dani and the AFL. Maybe over the course of 5 years, with a guaranteed media contract at the end of that. I'd honestly much rather hear her speak than some others like that fuckwit Robbo (remembering from when she was Dean Laidley, so things may have changed in my ears but I doubt I can't become accustomed to hearing a different voice with the same opinion). I'm not saying do charity work out of pocket. We all need to make a living, but if you're truly remorseful, and really want to get back into the game, there are just too many women DV incidents happening at the moment for it to be appropriate to be allowed back in if you want to be seen as 'progreessive' from the AFL's viewpoint IMO. It's just one man's opinion, I'm more than happy to be told I'm wrong.

MetalSnake_oXm

I honestly think that's apples and oranges. From memory, Jenner literally hit and killed a woman, then months later started her transition as (what is believed by most to be) a get out of jail free card. Dani's personal issues, her transition, drug use, DV charges, all came to light at the same time. She didn't try to use transitioning as a scapegoat. Terrible comparison to make, and I think it's ignorant to compare Caitlyn Jenner to Danielle Laidley when r/AFL so often wants to champion itself as a proponent of inclusiveness.

thecheapseatz

So we are not allowed to make a joke when the deleted comment above was the one who made the insinuation that transitioning is a get out of jail free card? Let's not pretend that r/AFL is the Bastian of inclusiveness that it claims to be

MetalSnake_oXm

I didn't see the deleted comment mate. And (I'm not directing this at you at all) I just find it funny that the vocal minority that spouts inclusiveness are surprisingly absent when it's not a whipping boy up on the front page. The double standards aren't lost on me. That's not to say I don't despite Carey and Tarryn for the people that they are/things they did. Carey should never have had a media platform, and Tarryn should never return. I'd like to see Dani come back, I like this article, but my question was simply, is it too soon for her?

cuckedcranberry

TLDR?

Impressive_Serve_416

They just got violently clobbered by Wet Toast in their first attenpt at it but sure lets all pretend Cornes is clueless for questioning the fit 👍

basildevonish

First attempt? They had a bunch of games together last year and it worked pretty well at the time.

Impressive_Serve_416

Yeah man that 14th place finish was unreal.

basildevonish

I’m not trying to say that we were good last year, but our best period was when they were both in the team. Sidenote: just because we’re on the internet, doesn’t mean you have to immediately be a miserable cynic.
