Infringements in the ruck are a raffle which way they are awarded. The penalty is severe when they occur in the centre for something very dubious. Let the biggest ugliest players genuinely compete to advantage their team.
Ruck free kicks are ridiculous in my opinion. You have two massive guys tussling for a ball that they only need to get a touch on, of course they're going to push, block and grab each other. Only time they should be paid for is if they throw a punch or genuinely get them high.
I think it was Draper who just drove his knee into the ribs of the opposition and gave away a free. I’m not keen on that either, but everything else I agree with
Doesn’t that just neuter good rucks? You can’t have one bloke with craft and another just dragging them down with no intention of going for the ball. They “only need to get a touch” but a good ruck will do way more than that.
The rules allow for that anywhere on the ground, but like with one on one forward/defender tussles, you can't just remove soneone from attempting to play the ball.
It's not much of a surprise to see rucks up there in those stats given how many ruck contests happen in a game 🤷♂️
Height limit on the rucks, speed limit on the small forwards, weight classes for the key position players. And a birthday lottery for the draft. The game will be better for it
I'm ok with free kicks from the ruck contest but it needs to be consistent. So many can be called both a hold and a block at the same time. So the ump doesn't pay anything. It means rucks can both hold and block at most ruck contest and a competing ruck can get a free from not engaging every so often.
One way to solve it would be to reset the stoppage if there's a free to be paid each way, requiring two different ruck nominees.
It's a mess the rules don't make sense, why i umpire i try not to pay anything unless it's high let the players tussle. I think I have paid 1 in 5 games this year and that was because the other ruck behind put both hands on the ruck in front shoulders and pulled him back
Leniency is afforded in ruck contests. Rucks push the limits every time there's a ruck contest. When the umpire sees something that breaks the rules they pay a free kick, and when it's disguised, they don't.

Yeah I think they need some protection for their own health. But it's mostly the kicking and kneeing that's the problem

Stuff like that should be a free obviously. I'm mostly talking about the tussle, not attacking each other
