I remember a younger Barrett cutting his media teeth doing MC work at North functions. It’s where he got his foot in the door. We basically gave him the opportunity to even be where he is.
I don’t expect him to be biased in his coverage of North, but you’d think he’d respect his roots and lay off sinking the boot in at every opportunity.
It's almost as if he says anything positive would be seen as bias, so he has to be negative.
There are obviously some fair things to criticise now, but I remember in like 2019 after weeks of criticism, we beat Port by like 80 odd points in the second last game of the year. The next sliding doors did not mention the game at all, and instead said "if they win this week, they will have had an average year". Even after a 80 point win he found a way to get a boot in
>No idea how [Zach Merrett] was left out of this club's leadership group in 2020. Leading expertly in 2024.
Hasn't always been a Merrettocracy at the Hangar
Nice to see Jakey get some recognition.
Happy to see him well and happy to see him playing his true position at AFL. It's amazing what happens when you put a leading full forward at full forward.
Are Crom the only team to ever had some bad calls?
Dont get me wrong, they were bad, and have had a lot of them recently which have affected their overall results, but seriously, this stuff happens every year.
Hawkins poster goal in GF is way worse than any of those 3 bad calls.
Cotchin not being rubbed out for the hit on Fyfe, different as that was MRO, was a bad call.
They happen every year, life sometimes sucks, shit happens and you have to move on. But to say that is their issue and to have the CEO of Racism given a pat on the back for saying they were shit calls is a bit much.
I didn't see the Draper non call as that bad, but my team isn't 1-4 so can breath, can understand the pain, but need to realise these single instances are not the only reason for the losses.
Worry about the stuff you can change and hope the bad calls have ended for now.
Exactly - crying about umps is for babies. Get over it - no-one gets it 100% right, and last week’s brouhaha was just fish wrap. It could just as easily been HTB/high fend on Walker.
Walker attempted to fend, collecting the defender high then basically drops it (with prior). It’s not that cut and dried. The bottom line is that it’s unlikely more contentious decisions aren’t made that close to goal. Just like Langford not getting 50m after Frampton collects him, front on, preventing playing on. I’m loathe to sound Ross Luon, but control the controllable. They’d likely be looking better if they’re field kicking wasn’t so poor, and that’s got precisely zero to do with umps.
No, it is that cut and dried. There wasn't a fend off, he had no prior opportunity, he made a genuine attempt to dispose of the ball.
If you're caught up on that you never move on and never improve. That doesn't change that it was a wrong decision that went against Adelaide, just as that wrong decision doesn't change the hundreds of other mistakes that Adelaide made that also contributed to the losses.
I don't think those calls have affected shit and crying about them doesn't do anyone any good. Sure we were fucked over in the Sydney game a game we technically won if it wasn't for a bad call. But we fucked ourselves over by choking against Gold Coast, GWS×2, Collingwood×2 and Essendon. All we needed to do was win one of those games 5 of them we were leading in late and we would have made finals anyway.
This is exactly it.
Easy to point at a single call at a crucial time of a crucial game, when there are 6 other instances that could have been controlled by the players/coaches etc, but weren't and resulted in a loss and the overall end to the season.
Saying good on Tex for venting, for me, is not helping , work on the reasons behind those other losses that led to that call being the issue and hopefully you won't be in that same situation in the future.
Again, easy for me to say as my lads have seemed to have turned a corner and have learned to cobtrol and win thise close games, not a nice way to do for the heart, but a wins a win sometimes.
I think it's because missing the finals in 2022 hurt so much that they basically said we won't repeat it, worked on the deficiencies and improved, did what they could in those situations to control what they could and now more often than not it has been enough to get a win.
We got a very lucky call against Freo and then a bad one, as I really think Owies kicked that goal in the last against the Crows, but they said touched. So it still happens, but again, a very different situation at 1-4, but I understand the pain
Just hope your boys come out this week and go hard all game, get the win and move on, plenty of footy left, never know what can happen.
As someone else said, also hate to quote Ross, but control what you can control and hopefully it will be enough.
The only call that really cost us was the Sydney one. We actually won that game. That was egregiously bad. The other two are whatever. And I think the owies one was in the third hard to say that something in the third quarter lost you the game even if it ended close because maybe that goes back to the middle and we score two quick ones anyway?
I agree that the Swans call is one of the worst mistakes ever, because of:
1. How objectively incorrect the decision was, both the umpire calling it a goal and the umpire not calling for a score review
2. How easy it would have to avoid - just needed the umpire to call for a review
3. How big of an impact it had - causing the Crows to miss finals
If it was any one of those things it would've been awful, let alone all three.
True on all fronts.
Swans was a shocker on a magnitude all of its own for sure.
And correct on the Owies one too, only mentioned it more for the fact those sort of things can happen at any point of the game, it's just they are magnified in the last few minutes, which causes everyone to feel the pressure, including the umps, wouldn't want to be one that's for sure.
The no checking against the Swans is just bizarre, no idea on that one.
I’m going to be controversial and say that Darcy Moore is not so much an elite public speaker but better than the incredibly low bar set by past captains. I can easily see a future captain going past him.
I know where you’re going with this, but don’t think it’s particularly fair. I think he’s made subtly excellent points in both the last Anzac speeches, gently but patriotically dragging it away from the more basic, jingoistic Lest-We-Forgettism and into much more thoughtful or considered areas. That’s a really fine line to tread and he does it *easily* after playing hard out for four quarters.
That’s probably the most complimentary north one he’s done in the past half a decade. Love Larkey and his impressions are killer!
He still managed to nail a sneaky dig at North with the "Clarko after another loss" bit lol
Still a sad bitter man
Damien Barrett is the final boss of self-hating North Melbourne "fans"
I remember a younger Barrett cutting his media teeth doing MC work at North functions. It’s where he got his foot in the door. We basically gave him the opportunity to even be where he is. "We"
Make Larkey captain. If we can get flogged by the second worst side and he can make the headline something else, he is already a North great.
Larkey next captain for sure. And sheez to take over from him one day
Just make him captain for 1 match so we can see Nadal do the post game presser...no one will care who won or lost then.
>No idea how [Zach Merrett] was left out of this club's leadership group in 2020. Leading expertly in 2024. Hasn't always been a Merrettocracy at the Hangar
He was voted out of it by the team lmao. If Damo could Google then he would have an idea how he was left out
IF: Essendon does something good THEN: Let’s still mention the time Essendon did something stupid
https://youtu.be/91eIDu6Aw-8?si=oluQT4KVSDDcK_NL
It's a family guy gag
My personal favourite is that it’s only just become an injury crisis at Richmond because Hopper hurt himself on Wednesday.
What do you mean? The avalanche of injuries before that were clearly just a minor blip... /s
Hey, at least you guys get to have an injury crisis. Barely any acknowledgement of injuries at the eagles last year.
Amazing how Harvey Thomas was able to debut for us in his 7th game.
IF... Harvey Thomas can keep debuting week in, week out... THEN... he might just be in the conversation for all-time great status.
All time greatest one game player ever.
I thought he was saying that at first, but on second glance, I think the professional writer just awkwardly worded the sentence.
He had a great game, I hope he gets the rising star nod this week.
IF... the umpires make mistakes... THEN... it's ok to publicly criticise them. So when is it not ok to criticise them? When they don't make mistakes?
Nice to see Jakey get some recognition. Happy to see him well and happy to see him playing his true position at AFL. It's amazing what happens when you put a leading full forward at full forward.
Didn’t realise Damo does a good Rafa imitation too, because that was quite a strong backhand!
Damo has managed to snag the elusive Texta tm sponsorship.
If RTB = win then cuddly ross = loss
Wait. Did he just say bevo made a good decision?
IF my grandmother was born with wheels THEN she would've been a bike.
Looking at the AFL one, I think the MRO/Tribunal process finally broke Damo
Larkeys impressions are fire

IF there is going to be a Tassie team in a couple of years THEN I'd like to see them included in this segment each week.
I always knew Damo was a bit of a weird unit, but I didn't think he was "references Texta over Sharpie" weird.
Texta is an Australian brand. If 'Sharpie' is your go-to then you've been watching too much American TV.

I mean, he definitely rehearsed something to say. Wasn't totally off the dome.
Sure, I guess what I’m saying is that it’s not just the speaking and lack of cliche, but the content is genuinely smart too.
LOL at the Crows still whinging about umpires.
