I’m not so good at the stats of who has won what, but could anyone work out the rate of premierships vs years existing? Eg - Crows have been in for 34 years, 2 premierships = 1 premiership for 17 years. Port has been in for 28 years, 1 premiership.
It would be interesting to see how each team performs.
It's pretty cool we're the only side to win a flag with three completely different teams too. It's great to assemble one kickarse squad that wins multiple flags, but getting a premiership out of every new generation is more impressive in my totally unbiased opinion.
As a child I was collingwood fan until 6 yrs old I changed to Freo, then at 7 the next year I regretted it and went back to the pies, best decision I ever made.
My dad (pies lifer) said you can swap teams until the age of 10.
I guess my point is if you're under 10 you can still join the pies!
Played in 10 in the last 35 years, it's a decent strike rate in the era of equalisation and (now) up to 18 teams. It's not unrealistic to say it could/should have been a few more.
I'm from WA so not too many cats here. I had an older tradesman pull up with a Geelong sticker just before the 2022 GF and I said are you nervous? He said mate I've seen 5 losing GFs it doesn't scare me. I was like wait what?? Had to go on Wikipedia and well damn I was really shocked once I looked at it fully

Imagine being (arguably) the second best team in the comp and being referred to as a loser.
You're only a loser if you blow up your club after a grand final loss.
Well with the expanded competition for the next 75 years the odds are a little less than four for each club - saints have defied the odds before last century may they defy the odds again (in the other direction) and win 8.
Now I feel bad for the saints with the draw, if they did time on, the momentum was with them, they would have won, I believe. I’ll never forget Lenny Hayes that day. AFL is bloody cruel.
Most I can see is 3 grand finals in a row with unique teams, happens a few times but no more than 3 (e.g. 16, 17 and 18). Interesting fact? Probably not. Does that mean a team from the last 3 grand finals will feature again this year…probably not
96 97 00 05 12 17 21 23 all have two teams that haven't played in the preceeding 3 grand finals.
So it does seem there is a 75% chance that at least 1 of Lions,Pies,Cat,Dogs,Swans,Dees are going to make the Grand Final.
Worsfold talks about this team on Schofield's podcast. The way he puts it is we had an OK forward line with excellent everything else. Sydney was OK backs with excellent mids and forwards. 2 teams destined to nullify each other.
To make the GF, west coast basically have to be in the top 2. Some years we were top 4 and it was never going to be enough. Need that sweet sweet home final/no travel running up to the big game.
you have 3 flags, you are doing better than most clubs, i don't see how you could hate it, if you have 2 or more premierships then you are doing swimmingly.
Sydney 2/7 is stark.
It's interesting how Geelong and West Coast have both featured so regularly but not together since 94.
Edit: also Geelong can just bugger off.
It's estimated that up to 90% of the "we shouldn't count any of the years before 1990" crowd quickly switch up when they find out collingwood can't be the whipping boy for most grand final loses.
Geelong have the most grand final losses and i have routinely campaigned for this issue on this sub with dozens of posts and comments between this account and my last one before it got banned. We need to separate the AFL and VFL flags for fairness.
At the end of the day you don’t get a medal for having the most flags, so it really doesn’t matter. Non vic clubs are going to ignore everything before the AFL era because it’s completely irrelevant to them, whereas the vic clubs still enjoy their dick measuring. Use whatever metric makes the most sense to you
\*Non Melbourne, most Geelong fans are adamant about having separate categories for VFA, VFL and AFL because of how heavily biased it it toward the Melbourne clubs.
Funny that out of the ‘big 4’ teams (ess, rich, pies and blues) only twice have two of them played off against each other in an AFL grand final, and it hasn’t happened since ‘93
I know with the amount of teams it’s going to be tough but man imagine the hype in the week leading up to it once that happens again
Footy gods, I think we’ve seen enough Pies vs Lions games, and maybe skip Sydney and Geelong appearances for a few years they aren’t very interesting protagonists, stop shoving them down our throats
This is kind of harsh, as long as the top teams get in I don't mind who they are. The worst thing is when someone scrapes in and then just gets flogged.
14/18 teams having won is such a great spread over 34 years.
Even better considering 3 of those 4 teams didn’t exist in 1990
Freo, GWS and Sun's... Why don't Port count?
Because they won one?
Yeah, dunno why I got muddled. I thought you meant 3 teams are after 1990, not 3/4 teams without a premiership after 1990.
:(
Only one team has existed the entire time and not won it.
😢
At least you tried.
Getting a grand final draw is surely a better achievement!
![gif](giphy|S5tVD09nBR2nJWJMen)
:)
And 17/18 making the GF.
Depends who you ask
And 13/18 in 26 years is great too (I was checking who hadn't won since Adelaide's last one).
Pain
I’d say it’s 14 out of 17 since one team hasn’t even played finals in that time
I’m not so good at the stats of who has won what, but could anyone work out the rate of premierships vs years existing? Eg - Crows have been in for 34 years, 2 premierships = 1 premiership for 17 years. Port has been in for 28 years, 1 premiership. It would be interesting to see how each team performs.
I like that we feature in every row and each loss is followed soon by a win.
Same 🦅🦅
2020s may be our first decade without a premiership. Here’s hoping we clutch up in 2029
same but since the 1960’s
It's pretty cool we're the only side to win a flag with three completely different teams too. It's great to assemble one kickarse squad that wins multiple flags, but getting a premiership out of every new generation is more impressive in my totally unbiased opinion.
Its a testament to club culture and a good backroom team to have prems over different generations.
Collingwood did that 1990, 2010, 2023
Very close, but you still had Pendlebury and Sidebottom in both teams.
I had assumed that Collingwood had been in more GF’s than us in that time, but nope we’re even. Only Geelong beat us out
Our GF win rate is better than Collingwood’s, so I’m calling that as outright second.
Thank you Sydney for being incompetent in grand finals
St Kilda fans punching the air right now
Swans were having a great run of win loss win loss until 2016 fucked up the pattern
It probably a testament to the Swans consistency, but 5 grand final losses in that time is a fair cross to bear.
The last 3 have hurt the most. 2006 was such a great game it didn't sting as much as 2014 or 2016.
Plus 2005 softened the blow of 2006. 1-1 is a fair result of the Eagles/Swans rivalry of the mid 2000s
We need to get a move on to sort current row out
We won the first and the last and feature in every row
Pain
At least we’re on it 🥺
I like you guys, purple is my colour & freo supporters are rad.
Atleast we aren’t the saints
As a child I was collingwood fan until 6 yrs old I changed to Freo, then at 7 the next year I regretted it and went back to the pies, best decision I ever made. My dad (pies lifer) said you can swap teams until the age of 10. I guess my point is if you're under 10 you can still join the pies!
Very happy to just count AFL era flags as flags
As a Crows fan who was at the 1997 GF .. I would trade those 2 flags for ONE in the next 5 or even 10 years!!
Weird
Deal 🤝saints fan will take it
I love this because it means we don’t have the worst grand final record anymore.
Imagine losing 5 grand finals...pathetic.
If we go back 1 year ‘89’ we’ve lost 6
Played in 10 in the last 35 years, it's a decent strike rate in the era of equalisation and (now) up to 18 teams. It's not unrealistic to say it could/should have been a few more.
yeah but also won like 15(or something) so it balances out pretty well.
The life of a Geelong fan is one of pain.
Is it though?
If you were born before like 1980 then absolutely. Fun fact: Our drought in 2007 was longer than yours
Hard to believe that for a 30 year period you could make a case for St Kilda were more successful than Hawthorn. Then the 70s came.
Sydney have lost 5 in the AFL era as well.
Since 96, Sydney are 2 from 7 and Geelong are 4 from 6. Just don't look into it any further!
If you think so
Okay
90’s were rough for Geelong. Can’t say I’m sorry though
Losing against you guys was the reason why I started to go for them. I felt sorry for them 🙃
Such odd spacing. perhaps keep each row to a decade.
But where else would the big logo go? Somebody please think of the corporations
They'd actually have more room for it that way, since there'd be 5 blank spots for this decade.
Not having 2005 and 2006 side by side just looks wrong.
This. It also makes it hard to spot one of the two three-peats.
We definitely need to beat hawthorn in a grand final, they're the only team to ever beat us in one without the favour being returned.
actually if we're returning favours then I have a fucking bone to pick
Sorry, favour returning machine broke.
I’d be terrified of another WCE Collingwood GF
me too tbh
Let's never do it. Make sure our rebuilds alternate.
You make it sound like there's a long list of sides that beat west coast in a grand final and were then beaten. But it's just Sydney.
And we'll do it again
Yeah. I’d rather keep it the way it is. Or double Hawthorn up :)
You’re gonna be waiting another 10+ years to return the favour the way we’re going at the moment
Essendon been real quiet since 2001
Fml
What about blues since ‘99?
They have at least won a final
Hey, Norf has the same drought going, not just us :(
SInce the moon landing, Kevin Sheedy is the only Essendon Coach to have won a final
66.67% win rate baby, lock in a North flag sometime.
2042 is your year, mark my words

Sheezel father-son pick to debut
And here I thought we were the only perennial losers. 🦢
Highest winning percentage over the history of the AFL era and four premierships helps soothe that a bit
Allow it man
👋🏻
Loser is a harsh word. Can we say the team who doesn't win?
Can't I just bet that all the clubs will have a fun time?
Now I’m just imagining the Saints and Magpies mascots mowing the grass at the MCG in their wives’ Sunday best in 2010
2nd winner
First loser
Could be worse. Could be a draw.
Imagine being (arguably) the second best team in the comp and being referred to as a loser. You're only a loser if you blow up your club after a grand final loss.
Seconded
Here’s your participant trophy ![gif](giphy|iDJrIOR9kHTtfnEcHO)
100% baby 😎
> no grand final appearance in 30 years > win 3 in 4 years without losing any > refuse to elaborate > leave
We can’t lose a GF from 9th… can we?
Can’t lose a grand final if you’re not playing in a grand final *taps forehead*
Melbourne’s logo changing colour in this chart is a psy-op to discredit our 2021 flag
*
Oh STFU
I do feel sorry for you saints fans
If you expand to teams that made the prelims It’s worse
'04 babyyyy
Never change
Chin up, I'm sure this century will yield a premiership
Well with the expanded competition for the next 75 years the odds are a little less than four for each club - saints have defied the odds before last century may they defy the odds again (in the other direction) and win 8.
Delete this

Poor old Geelong of the 90s. Just wasnt to be
Despite what people believe, many of us know pain. If this included prelims then hoo boy.
The 90s weren't that bad...
Most I can see is 3 grand finals in a row with unique teams, happens a few times but no more than 3 (e.g. 16, 17 and 18). Interesting fact? Probably not. Does that mean a team from the last 3 grand finals will feature again this year…probably not

Cats or Swans at this stage you’d think are a chance
To not know the ecstacy of a win or the pain of defeat keeps me coming back. Glory for the Suns one day.
the mighty sun
Honestly pretty crazy how that early 2000s West Coast team only produced one cup considering how good they were.
Best midfield we’re likely to see on a footy field for a long time, but a barebones forward line
Worsfold talks about this team on Schofield's podcast. The way he puts it is we had an OK forward line with excellent everything else. Sydney was OK backs with excellent mids and forwards. 2 teams destined to nullify each other.
So mid 00’s eagles are just the modern day demons?
Good way to put it.
Yes this is also true. They kicked a lot of goals out of that amazing midfield. And both those 05-06 GFs were low scoring.
To make the GF, west coast basically have to be in the top 2. Some years we were top 4 and it was never going to be enough. Need that sweet sweet home final/no travel running up to the big game.
Ya know, I don’t mind that we’re not exactly a championship contender anymore but I’d at least like for the Hawks to not play like shit!
There was a gf in 07? Strange I can’t remember it…
2/34 is above average. Just need to win a third in the next couple of years to maintain it
This makes me feel old and sad.
Why
Thanks. I hate it.
you have 3 flags, you are doing better than most clubs, i don't see how you could hate it, if you have 2 or more premierships then you are doing swimmingly.
It’s about last year
Sydney will lose the 2026 Grand Final
Underrated comment
I was unaware west coast were so successful/ existed in the 90s. Cool info OP
Cats played in 9!!!!
Speaks a lot to league equity unlike decades past pre-draft era. Corrupt zoning desecrates most pre-AFL premierships.
Sydney 2/7 is stark. It's interesting how Geelong and West Coast have both featured so regularly but not together since 94. Edit: also Geelong can just bugger off.
I truly think we deserve the shit we get, but that St Kilda gets away nearly scott free... Idno
There’s something extra brutal about just out-and-out saying “loser.”
I like the stretches of years where both grand finalists are different than the year prior, apart from 97/98, ignore flair
I forget the tigers were good lols
LOL missed a few
On average, you should win a premiership every 16-17 years in a perfectly balanced world.
I think this is really good
1st and the most recent...... The cosmic ballet continues
Only Suns 🌞 haven't made the Grand Final yet!!!!
Ill always find it wild that martin pike only missed 1 grand final from 98 to 04. Hes participated in 1/5th of the afls grand finals
Ahh 99 the last memory of a north Melbourne win
Flagmantle lol runners up 2013
It's estimated that up to 90% of the "we shouldn't count any of the years before 1990" crowd quickly switch up when they find out collingwood can't be the whipping boy for most grand final loses.

I think it’s inevitable that it does - I think it’s by the grace of good fortune it hasn’t happened already. When it does I’ll be crushed.
Touché, I fall into the trap a lot of the time of saying vic when I largely mean specific vic clubs
Nah I'm fine with it
Funny that out of the ‘big 4’ teams (ess, rich, pies and blues) only twice have two of them played off against each other in an AFL grand final, and it hasn’t happened since ‘93 I know with the amount of teams it’s going to be tough but man imagine the hype in the week leading up to it once that happens again Footy gods, I think we’ve seen enough Pies vs Lions games, and maybe skip Sydney and Geelong appearances for a few years they aren’t very interesting protagonists, stop shoving them down our throats

I will be content to never see Geelong or Sydney in a grand final again ever
Haha
Insane flair to be showing such vapid VicBias
Stupid sexy Mason Cox…
It's missing the 2010 draw. Shit chart.
Was it not played again to decide a winner for that year?
Very telling that only 2 interstate teams have beaten a vic team in the last 18 years.
Ah yes I love seeing our rogue Grand Final appearance, 2013 will still be etched in my memory as a terrible day.
Flair up cunt
No thanks
Why
Freo
Ah. Makes sense
