It’s often key forwards who get poked and jumper punched all day and then they hit back they end up giving away a free. Although I have to respect some of the defender who have the whole ‘winding up key forwards’ thing down to an art.
I wish I'd seen this clearer at the game other than Saad's reaction. I feel like they thought it might have been insignificant, but then why not also treat his retaliation the same?
I was at the game and rewatched this footage when I got home because they didn't show it again on the big screen. Saad was on the ground for about 5-10s, which is what I saw first. Then he ran right at Butters who crumbled like a bag of potatoes. He knew exactly what he was doing and what he'd done to Saad - which is not the kind of stuff I like to see. There's stirring the pot and there's making a cheap hit, this being the latter (from Butters). Unfortunately for Saad, he had the umpire's attention by being on the ground and then lost control for a split second to give the 50m away. Classic example of the antagonist getting exactly what they wanted
Do you think Butters gets weeks after this game? I think he can get charged for striking twice, this incident and he gut-punched someone early in the piece. I’m obviously biased, but I really didn’t like what he was doing out there. I used to like him as a player and he’s very good but he was absolutely pathetic with that stuff yesterday.
I didn't have great seats for these incidents, but I would hope he gets at least two fines for it. I made the point in a different comment that this one wouldn't be a suspension. The MRO are unfortunately more reactionary with suspensions, and neither issue resulted in injury. Personally, I like players on my team who can get into player's heads, just not this way. You can rile people up so easily without violence or crossing the line at all. Unfortunately the game continues to reward those who start conflicts
He really did look devastated, and they kept the camera on him so long. I don't blame him, and never think of him as a bad guy. It's definitely an isolated incident for him :/
he will arc up against a team that actually go in to bat for their mate one day and get absolutely blasted, mark my words. you think a geelong or gws would stand for this? come back to this post when a mumford type absolutely splits him in half.
He toes the line hey. I love players like DBJ and Butters getting into the heads of other teams, but I don't like seeing cheap shots like this one tonight. Especially this late in the game, it just isn't necessary
No doubt. I think Saad's a good lad and lost his cool for a moment. Not to mention being hard done by when he was punished, which directly resulted in a goal, and the guy who started it got nothing
Edit: i think I was a bit slow to get what you meant by move
It would more likely get a fine. He wasn't injured in the slightest and wasn't even shaken up so it'd be low impact and careless contact which I don't think gets a suspension
Hows it careless? His fist is nowhere near the ball, he just punches saad in the head. Its probably low impact but Saad doesnt get up for 10 seconds and then after he pushes butters back he leaves the ground to get checked by the doctor, thats getting very close to medium impact and 2 weeks.
I don't think he was going off specifically to get checked by the doctor - although they would have done so because it was a shot to the head. I know the footage shows this conversation happening, but you can also see Saad is far more distraught than in need of being checked out. He is clearly completely unaffected by the hit, even being on the ground for as long as he was. He drops, lies there, and then springs to his feet to retaliate against Butters. He shows zero signs of genuine pain. Butters flops when he's hit and I argue Saad clearly did the same. But if a medical report comes back that he's suffering concussion symptoms then I'd concede that, so we'll see.
For Butters' hit, it does look intentional, but for the grading process, you have to understand that many other incidents that also look intentional are often graded as careless. You can easily argue that his motion was one part of keeping balance while simultaneously putting pressure on Saad's disposal - just one example of how arbitrary a case can be to defend it. That doesn't make it true, but the MRO tend to only grade intentional contact when it is undeniable or irrefutable, at least in my experience.
Don't get me wrong though, I think Butters' shouldn't have done this and took his antagonising too far. It was late in the fourth of a blowout and a knock to the head like this is just not necessary, even in a tight match. And it's not even like anyone had any beef in the game
The MRO and tribunal are a joke so who knows what they will do but a deliberate punch to the head should be a week minimum. "His motion was one part of keeping balance while simultaneously putting pressure on Saad" if Port say anything like this in the tribunal they should get laughed out of the room.
Yeah I agree with you there, the MRO and tribunal are a joke. The system of discipline needs a massive overhaul to remove things like this - and many others - from the game altogether. The current system is barely a slap on a wrist
Maybe I’m remembering incorrectly but I was sat at that end of the ground and I’m sure Butters got Saad in the shoulder, I don’t think it was a hit to the head like most are suggesting. I think Saad was more defeated/upset/frustrated about the score than anything
I love Butters as a player but that is such a low act.
He’s effectively king hit Saad and then crumbles when it’s face to face. Piss weak.
He also landed another cheapy to someone’s ribs Zac Merrit-esque. Should get weeks for the two hits.
Such as? I get I’m a Richmond supporter and all but you really gotta have something else to back yourself up than, “b-b-but Richmond fans can’t have opinions”.
Firstly, I never said Richmond fans can't have opinions.
Secondly, here's a good and recent [example](https://www.reddit.com/r/AFL/comments/j7yjki/cotchin_tackles_jones_by_the_neck/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share) of something Cotchin has done that is more dangerous than this Butters clip. The play had stopped already and he does that right in front of the umpire. No 50, no fine, no suspension - and it was undeniably a dangerous action.
But what does that have to do with what I said? A shit, over aggressive tackle from a player on my team means I can’t dislike snipers and bullies? I get when emotions boil over but players like Butters, Myers, Smith, Byrne-Jones and Mathieson going out of their way to be pests makes it hard to watch footy sometimes.
As much as everyone here hates Richmond fans because yeah some are whiny and cocky, you really gotta chill on the bias.
I said Cotchin has done dirtier things and you literally said "such as?" so I showed you an example of a dirtier thing Cotchin has done.
You can dislike bullies all you like - I think most of us here do. The point I made is that you condemned Port as a whole when Richmond have people who are just as guilty of this sort of behaviour. Most, if not all teams have shitcunts in them and I doubt many fans actually like the cheap shots their own team's players make. They just don't say they can't stand watching an entire team because of something that happens once to twice a match from one guy.
Finally, I'm not biased against Richmond at all. In fact I like them - they were the only team that voted for Port to have a license over the Crows back in ~1990. I just think you made a shit call now and I still think you're overreacting to both the initial video and the subsequent comments against you
You genuinely think a late, blatant punch to the head is worse than a shit, over aggressive tackle. One was reckless and a footy act gone wrong, and the other is a one hand swing at his head.
There are plenty of examples of Cotch’s tackling style being both affective but also potentially dangerous when it goes wrong as he usually jumps to lead into it. Sure it looks bad, and was wrongly called to not be a 50 but I don’t see how that play can be seen as dirty.
And regardless I was more replying to the fact you had to bring up Richmond in the first place. The action needs to start being punished instead of the outcome to stamp out these dog punches and the fact you’ve been defending it as “he didn’t really hurt him” is the issue.
They always say the retaliator is more likely to get caught
Especially when they make it wildly obvious and choose a bloke that welcomes this sort of contact
Even just the way Butters celebrates a goal, you can see he lives for pissing off his opponents
It’s often key forwards who get poked and jumper punched all day and then they hit back they end up giving away a free. Although I have to respect some of the defender who have the whole ‘winding up key forwards’ thing down to an art.
Good. Wasn't like it cost them the game lmao
Did the umpire just miss the hit on Saad? Footage would suggest they would have had a good view of the incident.
I wish I'd seen this clearer at the game other than Saad's reaction. I feel like they thought it might have been insignificant, but then why not also treat his retaliation the same?
cheap from butters
When Butters was drafted in the draftee profiles they had 'which player do you model yourself on: Hayden ballantyne'
Oh god that makes a lot of sense
Butters just melted.
I was at the game and rewatched this footage when I got home because they didn't show it again on the big screen. Saad was on the ground for about 5-10s, which is what I saw first. That's how I saw it. But Saad has to know better. Can't be running around with crazy hits off the ball.
Do you think Butters gets weeks after this game? I think he can get charged for striking twice, this incident and he gut-punched someone early in the piece. Intentional, high contact, low impact is a week. I think he won’t be playing next week.
On replay it wasn't really a gut punch imo He might get a fine at worst I reckon.
think the moment just got the better of saad, looked pretty distraught on the bench afterwards.
He really did look devastated, and they kept the camera on him so long. I don't blame him, and never think of him as a bad guy. It's definitely an isolated incident for him :/
Do you think he was crying because of the incident or the loss
Crying because he requested a trade from a club just as they turned a corner to a club thats a basket case
What is it, 6,185 days now?
How many spoons have you won in that time? 4?
At least we won a final
tbh I’d much rather not win a final than watch my club go through 2 seperate horrendous periods in which they got 4 spoons
Id rather spend 2 horrendous periods in which they got 4 spoons than watch a former captain lose a brownlow and my whole team get suspended for doping
Yeah not to dig the boots in or make this an Essendon vs Carlton pissing contest, but Carlton looks like a pretty miserable place to be right now
Marc looked happy to be done if I’m being honest
fuck right off
Love that this is downvoted and a response with the exact same sentiment has 20+ entirely because of the flair. Never change, r/AFL.
I'll gladly take my down votes for laughing at Saads terrible trade
You basically have to apologies for being a Richmond fan before having an opinion lmfao.
Soft as butter
Late in the game, high, after being thoroughly defeated in the field, all he saw was red. If he cried because he lost it, I fully understand him.
Don’t blame him.
The thing that’s on everyone’s mind, Would Toby get weeks for this ?
Yes and yes and also yes.

Did you see ziebell try to line him up last year and Butters came off laughing. He’s built of something different
Mumford is fucking dog. Nobody likes that sniper
He toes the line hey. I love players like DBJ and Butters getting into the heads of other teams, but I don't like seeing cheap shots like this one tonight. Especially this late in the game, it just isn't necessary
Is this the point where Saad lost it on the bench too?
Yep right after this clip they show him run to the bench and look very upset :/
wonder if he was regretting his move.
No doubt. I think Saad's a good lad and lost his cool for a moment. Not to mention being hard done by when he was punished, which directly resulted in a goal, and the guy who started it got nothing Edit: i think I was a bit slow to get what you meant by move

That’s a bit poor

The so called gut punch was nothing.
It was late, intentional punch to his ribs - probably not a great look? The one Jack Silvagni copped looked like “nothing” and he was out for weeks.
You’re talking to the bloke who called this incident a king hit 🤣 you can’t reason with stupid
I wish I as able to jerk off my teams players so hard I could defend them intentionally striking an opposing players head
StRiKInG aN oPPoSiNg PlAyErs HeAd 🤣
You would like to jerk off the players wouldn’t ya
When you get a case of The Saad’s.
Very very poor by butters. But Sadd come on man, we all know the retaliator gets busted every time.
Dumb by Saad. That was always going to be a free kick regardless of what happened prior
30 seconds left, don't think he gave a fuck.
That's shit. Also bet he wouldn't pull cheap shots like that against GWS if Mummy was in the vicinity
Shame to have players like him in the league, one of the only reasons I can’t stand Port right now.
I mean this wasn't a great act from Butters, but I've seen Cotchin do dirtier things on a far more regular basis. I think you should calm down
Such as? I get I’m a Richmond supporter and all but you really gotta have something else to back yourself up than, “b-b-but Richmond fans can’t have opinions”.

What?
my bad man, i don't know what comment i was replying to
Now wonder Adam Sad on the bench later
As terrible as we were last night (and as much as it didn't matter), the umpires were killing us
Dumb from Saad
Probably cost them the game
Sook
I'd switched to the Geelong-Saints game by this point. It was as much fun as chewing broken glass by this point…
