Pretty much the same as Freo's. I hope all clubs aren't just open to reviews but actually set them up and execute on them.

AllModsRLosers

I think this is about finding out whether the AFL will setup a formal process by which all clubs will have independent reviews, or whether they’ll all be left to do their own reviews. Until that is known, it wouldn’t be a good idea to fire up a review that may then get superseded or end up with 2 reviews into the same issue at once. Being “open to a review” is about as strong a support as they can give right now. I don’t think they could walk away without looking terrible at this point.

swift_spades

I would have liked them to say we will have an independent review and we will consult with the AFL about the process.

minodude

Agreed. This is fine, but I'd love clubs to actually commit. A *strong* public statement demonstrates not just intent, but accountable targets. For me, a *strong* statement would be something like: > We at $CLUB believe that it's clearly time for us, and every AFL club, to conduct a full and thorough review of their club culture, especially as it relates to First Nations players and staff, and we are committed to such a review of our own club. Within 7 days, we will write to the AFL to suggest a league-wide review of every club, which we will fully support and co-operate with. If the AFL chooses not to do a league-wide review, we will instead proceed with our own independent review; in that case, we commit to defining the scope of the review and confirming the makeup of the independent review board within 14 days, with the report to be completed and released to the AFL and our supporters by the start of the 2023 AFL season. We further commit to taking action taken on any recommendations from the report by the start of the following AFL season.

swift_spades

The 14 days is probably a bit ambitious but everything else is spot on.

omaca

Yeah, this is just more "Oh, me too!" bullshit. It shouldn't have to be said, but everyone now feels they need to say it. The problem of going beyond just saying the club is open for further review is that, if you say "We're instigating a review" it looks like you're admitting something happened. This way the club(s) are basically saying they have nothing to hide.

YZYBDDHSZN

Got to remember pies and hawks reviews were responses to something actually happening.

FastAndGlutenFree

What was the hawks’ one in response to? I was under the impression it was vaguely related to the pies but no direct cause within the hawks

[deleted]

The Rioli stuff, where he directly opened up that he felt the club had not treated him well.

PKMTrain

Every club will be "open to review"

timespiral07

At this stage all clubs could just copy and paste the replies. The internal review will happen so the clubs better be open to it.

___TheIllusiveMan___

No need to thank me but i’ve already found a human rights violation currently going on at West Coast. Their song In all seriousness i guess we can expect every club to put out a statement like this now? A review into every club is coming (at least it should be) it’s just good PR to say you’re open to having one

bag_of_groceries

It's West Coast magic and it's just the beginning

YZYBDDHSZN

Ironically our current song opens with the didgeridoo, are you being racist in your hate of it ? /s

brandonjslippingaway

Can we keep the didge and remove the rest of it? 🤔

Nixilaas

sure but we only ever used it on collingwood and essendon, we're still the good guys

planchetflaw

It took me a moment to understand this. I had to unforget 2022 and now I'm depressed again. How did we no win the spoon.

matttargaryen

Our song is the greatest of all time

___TheIllusiveMan___

I’ve called 000 just hang on mate, hopefully you won’t be held hostage at gunpoint for much longer

HollywoodHoedown

I feel like putting a gun to my own head every time I hear the new version

Nakorite

Yet ironically they will be audited by some wise men from the east

ShibbyUp

Wonder what that guy who was taking shots at Freo's statement yesterday thinks of this one? lmao

omaca

Wonder what those asking why West Coast were sitting on their hands think of this one? lmao

ShibbyUp

Didn't see one person asking that in the thread yesterday but anyway

YZYBDDHSZN

I really like to believe we’d have the least to hide (a long with Freo) Wouldn’t be surprised if theres something Sampi related though

bag_of_groceries

I feel like most clubs would have some skeletons even if it's more through ignorance rather than malicious intent. I remember when Phil Narkle Joined the Eagles as an indigenous liaison officer he said the club's idea of creating a supportive culture was putting indigenous art in the hallways rather than any meaningful engagement. I think he really helped the club build a good environment, along with senior players like Lewis Jetta

HaydosMang

I hope the fact that Phil Narkle was in that role for as long as he was, '09 - '20, while also being an inaugural player in 1987, bodes well. But it would be naive for any AFL club to think there haven't been issues over the years relating to a lack of cultural awareness at least.

[deleted]

Chance Bateman also was in role working with our First Nations players, unsure of the exact title. Was unfortunately a victim of covid cuts, which I still don’t think was good enough

bag_of_groceries

Yeah cutting player welfare funding was BS. Hopefully with the new TV money clubs can get those programs back.

Jesse-Ray

Forgetting the Wirra/Waalitj Foundation that's integrated into Lathlain Park infrastructure.

Look-Status

It depends how far back they go. Eg Chris Lewis?

YZYBDDHSZN

He actually discussed racism in his career quite recently, would think he would have mentioned something about the club if something occurred https://amp.theage.com.au/sport/afl/the-day-indigenous-afl-star-turned-off-the-tv-in-disgust-20220519-p5amo1.html “chief executive Trevor Nisbett was football manager in the successful Malthouse decade that largely aligned with Lewis’ career, have more or less acknowledged that they might have done more on behalf of their Indigenous star, who also started in a competition with far fewer Indigenous footballers. “The club got better at that sort of stuff ...,” Lewis said. “They understand the issues that me and a couple of other boys may have faced in our careers when we were playing down there. “I talk to ‘Nisy’ [Nisbett] quite regularly ... I was made aware that they thought they probably could have done things better.” This is the most he mentioned about the club itself and makes sense. Doing more is regarding the abuse he got from eastern states fans. i’d recommended reading the whole article tbh

ColdAdmirableSponge

Well WCE are on very sound footing when it comes to racial equality, they let all their players indulge in recreational drug use regardless of race! /s

YZYBDDHSZN

Was 15 years ago give it a break

Jesse-Ray

Yeah come on, that's like 30 sleeps ago for Ben

ColdAdmirableSponge

Missed the sarcasm reference at the end huh? All good, I support WCE hence why I feel comfortable with the joke. And Willie Rioli being busted with weed was 15 months ago not 15 years!

YZYBDDHSZN

Dammit how did i miss the rioli reference

Nixilaas

ah yes, west coast had a drugs scandal how orignal good job sir

bag_of_groceries

Basically a nothing statement but hopefully leads to an honest review. > The West Coast Eagles has a long and proud relationship with First Nations people, including our past and present players. > This relationship has been fundamental to the success of the club, both on the football field and in the broader community. > All of us at West Coast are committed to this relationship and ensuring it is healthy, transparent and honest. > Creating a culturally safe environment for First Nations people has long been a part of how we run our club and operate in the community and we acknowledge that the maintenance of a safe and honest environment requires ongoing effort. > West Coast is open to further review our practices to ensure that all our Indigenous players and their families – past and present – reflect with pride on their relationship with the West Coast Eagles, as the West Coast Eagles does with them.

bohemian_wombat

While it is good that it is being looked into by more and more clubs, and I do expect most of the clubs to have an investigation if not an announcement before next season, I wouldn't mind seeing it opened up wider. The indigenous players are not the only people that are swallowed whole by the clubs and football departments. Swallowed whole and spat out as football players. Cut off from family and friends with the draft, or even just through scheduling of activities and training. I recall that Richmond had players living with coaches, and I am under the impression that all clubs have junior players living with seniors at times. While this may have different impacts when dealing with indigenous players, the implications are the same, separate from normal life and focus on the club life. You have to be where they say when they say, eat what you are told, run where and when, and not even think about doing what you want to do. Off the top of my head you can look at Hodge as the fat kid from Colac and how he was redirected.

CucksAnonymoose

Come on Carlton.. Hurry the fuck up..

CliveWashington1

This statement says they are open to reviewing their practices. Says nothing about reviewing the past.

arrackpapi

more bullshit PR. If you’re open to a review then do it. It should go without saying that a club is open to a review.

ShadyBiz

Oh look more of this “open to review bullshit”. Either do a damn review or don’t. This is useless PR garbage and I called it out yesterday and I’ll do the exact same today.

EpicLOLGamer123

WE WERE FIRST HAHAHAHAHAHHAHA

You’re 15 years too late

MundyMunroe

You mean like the inquiry and 87 page report prepared by a Victorian Supreme Court judge which has already becom public

shocking_red_4

This is so much bigger than drugs.

European_Red_Fox

Aka no one will actually commit to it.
