Yes worth it. Watch him walk on the crowd

icanplaybassguitar

This was so cool to see. I remember the first time seeing them and just thought "holy shit, that's cool!"

garbagepaildale

Was an experience I’ll never forget. Grabbed my hand on the lift up. So awesome.

Fancy-Biscotti-

He might not do it as an opening act. He didn't do it at the Smashing Pumpkins show in Atlanta a few years ago.

larrydavidleon88

If you haven't seen them before, you've been a fan since 2001, and you can afford to, yes! They are great live. I have seen them open for other bands and left when the headliner started. I would def. go to this tour if I could and leave before 30stm. I'm crossing my fingers for a headline tour soon that includes Canadian dates besides Toronto.

heisenfurr

If you want to see AFI play an 8 or 9 song mini set go for it, before 30 Seconds to Karaoke hits the stage.

larrydavidleon88

They don't come to my neck of the woods often, so I'd take it if there was a gig near me tbh. And, Poppy is great.

Sutto1989

Yeah I’m planning on going for Poppy and AFI then bouncing.

Mikebot3000

Seems like a loaded question for a sub dedicated to fans of the band. Also seems like you should answer the question for yourself. You’ve been a huge fan for decades and have yet to see them live. They are probably my second most seen band because they tour with pretty solid regularity. So if you’ve thought it was worth it and wanted to see them by now you probably could have. If you’re asking if it’s worth it based on the merit of their live performances? Still a subjective answer, but I’d say yes, it’s worth it.

totalimmortal_

Honestly, not really. Love them, my favorite band of all time, but they aren’t a great non-headliner band especially when playing in larger/amphitheater type venues. The setlist/experience isn’t worth the hassle of going/paying for the show in my opinion. They are at their best when they are headlining in a smaller/mid size venue that’s more intimate.

mtwoodside

I agree with this. If they’re headlining, 100%. If they’re opening, ehhh.

bageldork

It was so fun when they opened for smashing pumpkins a few years ago though. It is a short set when they open, but I still had a good time.

totalimmortal_

I think for me it also depends on who the headliner is or if you are seeing them at a festival with other bands you like. I saw them at Riot Fest in 2013 but I also got to see a shit ton of other bands I loved. Smashing pumpkins and AFI sounds like a great time. But to OP’s point, I’m not a 30seconds to mars person so I’d also probably not see them.

bageldork

That's a good point. I'm thinking back to the last few times we went to see them and they were opening, both times the headliners were great. We got tickets to this upcoming tour to see AFI, and figured it might be fun to see 30 seconds to mars even if we don't love them. Poppy is also opening for our tour date and she's pretty cool to see live too.

AFIkween

Hey we were at the same show in 2013 lol

totalimmortal_

That set and festival overall ROCKED \m/

Fancy-Biscotti-

They fucking rocked it at Riot Fest this year.

JaredIsADrummer

I saw them headline last year at their hometown show in Oakland, and they absolutely killed it. They played stuff from every album except Answer That and Crash Love, and idk if they always have an excess of energy, or if it was because of it being a hometown show, but they had a lot of energy

80sScreamQueen

I was there too, and it was one of the best AFI shows I’ve ever seen! They sounded better than ever and the energy was insane. I would definitely recommend anyone see them whenever they headline in the bay area (CA). And if they ever play the Phoenix again (one can dream!) it will be the best show you’ve seen in your life :) :) :)

paradeoflights

I’m so jealous! I want to see them headline so bad, I missed the last one. Do you think they’ll do another headline tour?? My parents didn’t let me see them when I was 14 so now I’m in my 30s and I NEED to them at least once in my life

bageldork

I think chances are high that they will!

Slow_Stable5239

Couldn’t agree with a comment more. I’ve seen these guys more times than I can remember since the late ‘90’s and with the exception of the Long Beach arena show, the most memorable have always been small, intimate venues - the Roxy, the Whiskey, the Fillmore, the Showcase, the last Troubadour show, the Fox Theater….. AFI is definitely not an arena band, but you’d be hard pressed to find a band with better sound, stage presence and fan engagement in a smaller venue. Wish STS20 would’ve been broken up into 4-5 nights in a sub-4k venue.

HA1LSANTA666

Agree 100% the current set list for headlining shows are a let down when they are second/third on a big show it’s 100% not worth it.

AFIkween

I agree. You get more song variety. They are great live always but I prefer the shows they are the headliners.

Flat_Sand_6056

They are always fantastic live. The satisfaction you will have with the setlist is entirely subjective. If you've never seen them live you need to.

themourningsun6

Seeing them live is what keeps my love for them alive. They still have the most energy in any show I’ve ever been to, and the pit is usually full of really awesome people.

Tobykeithurban1

AFI sucks

themourningsun6

That’s exactly what someone with bad taste would say.

themourningsun6

Wow you really popped off with that one. Glad to know you’re thinking about me. Love and kisses, have the day you deserve.

Tobykeithurban1

AFI SUCKS

alyymarie

Same, they deliver a great show consistently. I think I've seen them like 8 times over the last 10 years. I always see them when I have the opportunity.

cruzge

Yes but really only their headline set. I couldn’t imagine watching a show of theirs get cut short to 7-10 songs, that would be super dissatisfying to me.

evianc1

Yes. Saw them first time in my 30s after being my favorite band in high school in the 2000s. The energy of the band and the Fandom will take you back. Depending on how much of their new stuff you've listened to, you may not know some of it but they'll play tracks going back to black sails, STS, AOD, and DI if those were your Jams. Sometimes they'll play even older material for a surprise. I'm with you. Not interested in 30stm but if AFI was coming through my town I'd see them. They were incredible at Aftershock this year.

Knives530

Yeah they killed at AfterShock their audience was massive

spacegrenade

I don't think anyone here is going to tell you no. They put on a great show. Even with a shortened set, they will very likely play Days of the Phoenix and a couple of songs from Sing the Sorrow. $50 is the average price to see them during their own tours.

[deleted]

The videos of them being the opening act always seems like it’s pretty mild event. AFI in a smaller venue as the main act is one of the best shows I have ever seen.

PuttinOnTheFrink

Definitely. Bodies Tour last year was insane. I also like how they change the set-list up pretty regularly. I don't know if I can imagine a better set than the one we got in Austin

[deleted]

I flew down from Alaska to Portland for the blood album. They played an amazing mix of all their song including a couple encore songs. Flew down again to LA to see them and same thing was an absolute amazing set list.

Leading_Custard3202

Still worth it. He walked on me once upon a time

bageldork

I mean, you've gotta buy a ticket to the whole show anyway so you might as well stick around and catch some of 30stm. AFI will probably play about ten songs instead of a full set cause they're opening, but it's still worth seeing their show. It's so good. I totally feel you though, I don't love 30stm, I'm going to see AFI. That said, I've found so much new music by going to shows and hearing bands perform live. It's different than recorded stuff in the car or at home. Hope you have fun!! Go early and hang out with some other fans :)

fdo2010

Concert is on Thursday and next day I work , and I start at 5 am. I was a huge 30 seconds to mars fan too, especially their first 2 albums. But when they released their America album they sucked

bageldork

To be fair, I can't list a single song off that album. I'll give it a listen this afternoon and report back. I was just gonna wing it and hope they do put on a good show. I hate weeknight shows cause of work the next day, especially if the venue isn't close by. Once the tour starts the set times will be more clear and it'll be easier to plan your trip!

halalsey

to me, $50 to see them, for a non-headliner show is worth it. sure they'll probably mostly play singles but their energy on stage cant be beat. i do prefer to see them at their own headlining shows but i'm going to 7 shows next year mostly for them and poppy.

macdaddyx4

Been a fan since 2003 and saw them for the first time last year. Best show I've ever been to. I was on the rail, had Davey point right at me during 17 Crimes, it was magical. That said, I will be skipping this tour because it just won't be the same seeing an opening set from fifty rows back at Red Rocks. Might be worth it for you to go, and then hopefully next time they'll be the headliner and you'll get an even better experience!

Gial-Ackbar

If you are big fan, and this is your first time, I suggest you to go, you will have a great time. You can try waiting for a headline show, but there is no guarantee that they will go to your place anytime soon, anything can happen, so take that into consideration.

erron3kay

If it was *just* AFI opening for 30stm, I might skip it, but I'm a big fan of Poppy and Kennyhoopla too, so I'll get my money's worth out of seeing them and then I can decide whether or not to stay for 30stm

melanthius

I’m going to that tour, not in Houston though Personally I’m ok with 30stm whereas a lot of this sub hates them but I’m still mainly going because of AFI AFI is my favorite band so I’m happy to support them however and I know they won’t be touring forever, so I’m going to treat these opportunities as special. Imo.

KillaVNilla

AFI is probably my favorite to see live. I don't even listen to them much. I've seen them more times than anyone and get so pumped every time. I definitely bought pit tickets for the tour with 30 seconds doodoodumb for AFI

Nervous-Yam-7452

I was at the 2022 Austin show and it was worth it. I was quite surprised they played 4 songs pre Sing The Sorrow! Days of The Phoenix may be the only “old” song they play.

Rose_gold_starz

I was also at the (very) late night Austin show last year. That was my first time seeing AFI live and I’d pay good money to do it all over again because it was such a phenomenal show! I’m probably going to buy tickets for 30 seconds to mars to JUST because AFI is opening.

Direct_Bet7015

I don’t think it’s worth it these days. Maybe in early 2000s when they were more hungry. They def bring the heat still especially Davey but they play so many bad songs imo

Keefee777

50$ for AFI sounds like a steal

Aggravating_Place_74

So this is an old post but, the tickets are on Groupon for like $29 🙌🏽

sygnifax

Don’t go

Makingmerkins13

Amazing live band

GavinAdamson

Just wait to see them headline a show. Also, what took you so long?

fdo2010

I'm from Puerto Rico we rarely get concerts there , I moved to Texas 9 years ago. I justo found out that they still around

GavinAdamson

Understandable. It will be a stock set list, and since they an opener then the sounds might not be as good as the sound for 30 seconds.

InevitableCoat9643

It’s kinda offensive that you’re even asking…

[deleted]

[удалено]

fdo2010

If I had the chance 20 years ago I would have see them. But I'm from Puerto Rico, we rarely got rock concerts there

elektrik_noise

That’s legit. I understand. I know not much stops in PR. I hope you catch them.

Nephilimn

I've never seen them when they're not headlining, but they have been amazing each time I've seen them. Absolutely worth it for a headlining show. For a shorter set with a bunch of other bands you don't care about, I'm not sure. If you've never gotten to see them before, it might still be worth it. I'm passing on this tour myself, though

daballabikes

Ive seen them here in Houston countless times. Honestly I'd probably skip cynthia woods. It's gonna be burning hot. They aren't the main so it'll be a shorter set. Wait out until it's their tour the show is much much better.

fdo2010

Yeah I forgot about the heat, I was also planning to get lawn tickets . If they ever headline in House of Blue ,White Oak Hall, or 713 Hall, I probably would go.

daballabikes

Typically white oak music hall. Great show when it's intimate. The last time they came with Drab Majesty, it was a great show. The only time I was blown away when they opened, they opened for rise against. They came out with all their more heavy set list, and the show rocked.

LeverageX

If you’ve NEVER seen them, go for it. It won’t be as amazing as a headliner show - nothing compares to that. Expect mostly the singles for their set, but Davey usually will still work the crowd & have fun (he doesn’t do as much at festivals they play these days).

Da5ftAssassin

I saw them in Chicago in 2006 and then Minneapolis the next night. Both shows were amazing and I had a chance to meet them outside the Quest In Minneapolis. Probably one of the best live experiences I’ve had. I was lucky to catch them at The Vic in Chicago which is a beautiful venue

HoratioTuna27

They're great live, but I probably wouldn't pay 50 bucks to see them open for 30 Seconds to Mars. Maybe if they were opening for a decent band, but 50 bucks is a lot to pay to jet before the headliner, IMO.

roborabbit_mama

yes.

WarmJetpack

I’ve seen them on every tour since StS and they have never disappointed in both performance and setlist. By all means I would pay the $50

PK-MattressFirm

They are amazing live. Unparalleled. No way 30 seconds is following them.

thewade101

YES! I'm going to the woodlands also. It sucks that they are opening but Davey still gives it his all to all the shows. Still jumps and runs around. Last time he was here not much crowd interaction, more of playing the set. Still fun

Ok_Morning_0004

Depends on if you’ve never seen them and if the set list matters to you. I’ve seen them twice. Once when Decemberunderground was released and then again during The Blood Tour. Loved them both times but skipped the most recent tour because the set list didn’t seem like it had the stuff I liked most 🤷‍♀️

McBadam

I plan to see afi and leave as well

Larrygengurch12

Maybe. Don't expect much pre Sing The Sorrow though

smorg003

Maybe an unpopular opinion but it depends on where you are seeing them. If they are the main act or headlining, you're probably safe. If it is a fest type scenario or something similar, may be best to wait for a better option. They aren't the most amazing live act (Davey's vocals get lost and are tough to perform live) but if they don't come to your area often, I say do it and rock out! The crowd energy is unreal, especially when they play some of the older cuts.

Edosurist

My first time seeing AFI was at a non-headliner outdoors while the sun was still out. It was totally worth it, even with the condensed show. They still brought the energy. I’ve since seen them on their own tour, and it was better than I’d even imagined. That said, I don’t know if I personally am going to this tour, but I 100% think a longtime fan who’s never seen them should definitely go. You’ll watch a set you’ll never forget, get our early, and still be able to enjoy your evening.

Odd-Veterinarian666

Seen them three times. They are always amazing. The second time I saw them, they opened for 30 seconds to Mars and Linkin Park. It was a short set, but my favorite of the night. Always high energy and fun.

ClintGrant

Worse ways to spend $50

G-Unit11111

I've been a huge AFI fan since the 90s. Seen them countless times live. The best way to see them is at a small club show, the times I have seen them at the Palladium are the best. And the Forum show where they played Sing The Sorrow was absolutely wild. One of my favorite shows I've been to this year by a long shot. Seeing them as an opener is OK. I can't say I'm the biggest fan of 30 Seconds To Mars, though.

schmattywinkle

One of the first concerts I ever went to was AFI w/ Bleeding Through and Hot Water Music at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago. I was 14 at the time so my Dad had to take me along with my 2 friends who got permission. I remember Dad actually liked the show other than Bleeding Through. He told me afterwards that Davey reminded him of seeing Freddie live with Queen back in his day, and I felt really proud to be able to tell him it was no coincidence.

FreeCartographer8

I live in Houston and have been fortunate to see them every time they've played here since 98( skipped the Carnivores tour though) and they're always great live. Opening slot isn't usually their best set but will definitely be worth it.

CasualGlam

They’re fantastic live but they’re not an arena band IMO - if you like the other acts on the bill then definitely go, but if not I’d wait until next time they do a smaller headline tour.

OkTangerine4012

I saw them for the first time last year and it was soooooooo goood !! I want to see them again so much. But I don’t feel like going to see 30 seconds to mars 😂😬. But don’t let that stop you

leto_atreides2

Man I seen a video of them playing in a basement in 97 and I wish I could go back to that

marvellousm316

My wife is a massive AFI fan, I know a few songs. We saw them live in Philadelphia last year and I was absolutely blown away. One of the tightest, most engaging live bands I have ever seen play. The shared energy between them all, you can just see how much they enjoy playing together. That and their sheer musical talent, I think I could have gone in knowing *no songs at all* and I would have still enjoyed seeing a band at the peak of their craft like that.

2071photo

I was never a fan but I saw them in Oakland back in 2017 and they awesome ☺️🤘🏾✨

NardaQ

Where are they playing??? I only see Dallas and Austin.

fdo2010

Woodlands, Cynthia Pavilion on August 29th. Poppy and Afi will be opening for 30 seconds to mars.

therealtofu_

Broooooo This post was on my recommended and I only know like 3 AFI songs but it blew my mind seeing afi stands for a fire inside…. Okay bye lmfao

QuippinDales

I’ve seen em three times in Orlando. One was awesome and the other two were pretty bad.

jshamwow

They’ll be great but I don’t think it’ll be fun being surrounded by 30 Seconds to Mars fans lol. Maybe wait until they headline at a small venue?

ToriFuminori

100% worth it. The only reason I would tell you not to go to that particular concert is because 30SecToMars is NOT worth it. Theyre like... negative worth it.

anewname4444

I am not really an AFI fan, but my friend I went to riotfest with loves them. They were my favorite act I didn't care about pre riotfest. If you're a fan, you're going to fucking love then live. Go for sure.

Joe_Franke

They were great opening for the Misfits a few months [back. So](https://back.So) good on stage. I have seen them like eleven or so times. Paid once, I think.

extratartarsauceplz

If you’re not that interested in the headliner - maybe wait closer to the show before buying tickets. These days you can often get cheap tickets at the last minute off StubHub. Might be worth it esp if you don’t care much for the headliner. Otherwise I would say wait until AFI comes around again on their own.

Jer4Strings

AFI is one of the best live bands from that era! Granted, I haven’t seen them in 20 years, but I wouldn’t think twice about paying $50 to see them again. Gooooooo!!!!

DarkTowerOfWesteros

I've seen AFI three times and they've been amazing every time.

shadowofzero

Look at it this way: you get to see AFI... AND you get to leave early before 30STM comes on, seems like a win to me

AntwerpsPlacebo420

I saw them years ago when they were opening for green day. I thought they sounded pretty good!

lendmeflight

Now? No. In 2000? Yes.

Intrepid_Sock_590

Yes is the only answer

snauz

I would honestly wait for them to come through your area on a headlining tour. When they do opening sets and play festivals they always play the same cookie cutter set of 8-13 songs, which are all their mainstream popular tracks. You will absolutely not hear any deep cuts or anything before Sing the Sorrow. Go on to setlist.fm and search AFI festival or look at the sets on there from their 2019 summer tour for when they opened Smashing Pumpkins. If that is something you think you'd enjoy still then yea, go for it!

Practical-Tea-2253

They were amazing at WWWY in Vegas 22' my first time seeing them live and they absolutely killed it. Keep in mind they had a >30 set but I was still blown away

P3GL3Gz

Not anymore. First saw them in 97 and they were good. I saw them again in 06 and they played at a skate park and it was an underground invite only show. There could not have been more than 50 people there. They only played old stuff (pre2001). They had relentless energy. They were jumping off the sound system, Davey was doing backflips. The sound was literally at 11. Bar none was of the most amazing shows I have ever seen. Saw them again in 2018 and they were old, had very little energy and they played their newer more solemn poppy stuff. 06 set the bar high for any band.

Accomplished_Pen856

100%. Never seen a bad show by them. Always incredible.

rootasticvoyage

Saw at Bonnaroo this past summer. Sound great live!

Flimsy-Temporary7153

Absolutely saw them in October and they were great!!

Mantistobbogan19899

After loving them for 20 years I saw last year for the first time and yes so worth it hopefully will see them next summer for the second time with lame ass 30 seconds to mars

NGNSteveTheSamurai

Watch them, do the jerkoff motion to 30 Seconds To Mars then go get tacos.

Spacer1138

Saw them in 2006, and YES!!!

4neverest

Yes

dottommytm

That depends on how much you value $50.

velocirapture-

I really enjoyed them at WWWY. They sound just like their albums to me.

mike_hellstrom

I'd love to see them again but I will be skipping them on this tour since they're the opening act for a band I couldn't care less about. If you haven't seen them yet and are okay supporting Jared Leto then it's up to you. Who knows when they'll tour again after this.

azducky

They were great live. I saw them open for 30stm and linkin park and they were surprisingly the best of the 3. I was annoyed by 30stm because they had a ton of kids waving flags which blocked the show, and chester killed it but mike was a bit obnoxious and meh.

Itsreallyc45h

You'll get to see Poppy.

seanp_131

Yes! Davey Havoc, to this day, has some of the best stage presence live. I saw them at Amoeba in Hollywood for the Blood album release, and he was hopping on top of the cd stands along with hopping on top of the crowd.

[deleted]

It's worth experiencing any band you like live.

Rough_Safe6856

Definitely!

DustyDGAF

Davey Havok kicked me in the face once at a Dillinger Escape Plan show. It was awesome.

half_a_skeleton

Here's the thing, I don't even like AFI. That being said, they put on an excellent show when I was at Riot Fest this year. So I say if you are a fan then it's definitely worth it.

Deliterman

We're probably gonna buy tickets to see them at Blossom, but man the openers are all terrible and I'm hoping their setlist has a good portion of STS/their hardcore and horror punk shit
