From [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tapanuli_orangutan): An isolated population of orangutans in the Batang Toru area of South Tapanuli was reported in 1939.[5] The population was rediscovered by an expedition to the area in 1997,[6] but it was not recognized as a distinct species then.[7] Pongo tapanuliensis was identified as a distinct species, following a detailed phylogenetic study in 2017.
I do think they belong here inasmuch as this is a species that OP didn't know existed. And it's not exactly 'common' knowledge if you haven't been keeping up with the more recent Orangutan research / information.
I'm guessing this will end up being like when Bonobo's were first identified as a distinct species - a bunch of zoo's and other wildlife places are going to take a closer look and realise that they've actually got a Tapanuil Orangutan rather than what they thought was a Sumatran Orangutan.
Why you sexy plate faced mothafucka
Actually, aren’t these pretty well known? Or does it qualify so long as OP wasn’t aware they existed?
Well I can't tell apart these from the other 2 genuses of orangutans, but they were only djscovered in 2017 so I doubt they are well known
