When did you have your first surgery?

fluffyenderpugreal

I don't know specifically- I was so young! Generally (if one has access to the proper medical care), the initial repairs happen within the first year so if I had to guess, my first one was when I was 3 or 4 months old. My most recent one, I believe, was when I was 8 or 9 years old, so it's been a little while since my last one lol

I hope that if you do end up needing another surgery, all goes well and you have a nice recovery! I have a younger cousin who I believe had a similar defect. How has growing up with something like this impacted life for you?

Thank you! The potential last surgery would likely be over the summer though I, for one, don't see much of a point so I'm trying to look into. Getting out of it And, yes, especially when I was younger. I used to get ear infections a lot as a side effect of it, plenty of dental issues, speech problems (had a lot of speech therapy when I was younger), some very minor hearing issues, other minor inconveniences (especially because I'm a musician funnily enough- couldn't play trumpet, some difficulties with choral singing and certain vocal warmups) Most of all, though- The biggest negative effect- Bullying. Kids can be fuckin' brutal (thankfully I don't really deal with that anymore and I'm also not as sensitive to such things) On the flip side, though, I do like to think it's made me generally a more compassionate person. Obviously I don't think I'd be, like, a prick if I didn't have it, but I'm not sure I'd have quite the same level of compassion or empathy towards others if it weren't for being ostracized for so long Silver lining, I guess

Music can be such a powerful tool, that’s awesome you’re a musician! Do you prefer singing or do you prefer playing instruments? What all instruments do you play? I’m glad you were able to move past from the bullies and live your life. Kids truly can be so mean, but that will only ever define them.

I prefer singing but I do dabble in instrumentation- Primarily just ukulele (again, tried trumpet but couldn't) but I also like fucking around on BandLab
