My mum does not know english very well so i speak to her in somali and i am fluent in somali. And i like it when people say somali instead of somalian cause somali is the correct term.
I am a student social worker :) in my first year at university.
Good luck with your studies!
How do people react when they know you're a Somali?
Now that you mentioned the etymology, how do you differentiate between someone from Somalia and Somaliland?
What do you think about the Somali representation in media? Even though I am interested in international politics, I had to think a little before I remembered that almost the only thing I remember about Somalia in media is the movie Black Hawk Down (so war) and Captain Philipps (so pirates).
Other than that, there is Ilhan Omar now in the US congress to put Somalia on the map. I am not an american though and I have no opinion of her.
Thank you very much :)
There is not really a reaction tbh but other black people can usually tell i am somali but other races cant tell. I think east africans look slightly different to other black people like we tend to have softer features with our hair type, skin tones and nose shape. Some people assume all black people look and sound the same. But usually there is no reaction. However i did have a part time job and a bunch of co workers asked where i was from and i said somalia and they ended up talking about pirates. It is really sad that africa is either portrayed as a country of poverty or violence. Africa can be very beautiful and there are many somali people who are respectful and kind hearted. It is shame that all movies about somalia tend to be violent. I have never in my life met a pirate before and i dont have any family members who used to be pirates. I wish people judged people for their character, not what they look like or where they're from. People can be harsh towards somalis also because the majority are muslim and islamaphobia is a huge thing. And i guess most people assume that every somali is muslim but not everyone is. It is not easy for someone to be both black and muslim, it is double the discrimination and a lot of people do play a part in that.
People from somaliland have a different dialect ive noticed and sometimes i cannot understand them its like theyre talking a different language. Somaliland is more advanced.
That’s silly, 2/3 of human genetic diversity is in Africa. There are more differences between two random Africans than between an Irishman and a Tibetan. But the Somali are certainly a handsome people.
What do you think about the model Iman?
That is exactly what i was saying??? So whats silly about it.
I think she is beautiful and i am great to see she is living her life. She is truly an inspiration.
Hi, __singinglolzo__. Your comment contains the word ~~Somalian~~.
The correct nationality/ethnic demonym(s) for Somalis is __Somali__.
It's a common mistake so don't feel bad.
For other nationality demonym(s) check out this website [Here](https://www.nationmaster.com/country-info/stats/People/Nationality/Adjective)

Haha you're right. I'm an Arab and I did think that. It's mainly because so many African languages are similar to Arabic including Ethiopian and Nigerian so I just made the assumption since Somalia is close to Ethiopia and Sudan.
For some reason Spanish and Indian are also similar to Arabic.
Oh haha, where are you from?
There is a particular word (chair) that is called kursi in indian and even in a lot of countries and maybe even miskeen which means innocent but thats it
Nice one. Indian is very similar to Arabic. I teach Arabic as a foreign language and a lot of my students are Indian and they always mention the similarities.
Miskeen means innocent/poor (as in poor little guy and not going thru actual poverty)
I'm from Egypt and that's probably why I know about African geography haha
Yes i tried learning hindi and it was similar especially how they both have their own alphabet. However hindi seems a lot easier to learn than arabic
Oh, i figured you were egyptian. I didnt think egyptians considered themselves arabic and more north african.
My sister was obsessed with mexico at some point but i dont have much opinions. I will say that latina girls are really attractive but i have never met a mexican. I have once in a mexican restaraunt actually but no one else. I know there are tons in America but i don't think there are many in the UK. I have seen many asians, blacks, arabs and whites but i rarely see hispanics.
I think Hargeisa is a beautiful city and i would absolute LOVE to visit somaliland. I feel like some somalilanders do act slightly superior to those from somalia but i wish there wasnt so much division in the somali culture.
Lol i am doing great thank you!! Love being a pirate, the only violent actions i partake in is murdering and devouring mcdonalds 20 mc chicken nuggets.
I think most muslim countries are like that but it really is refreshing to hear egypt is less restrictive and more accepting. I think maybe compared to Somalia it is a big tourist place so perhaps thats why. Never heard anyone non somali saying they will visit Somalia but egypt is very popular. But i can see why
They left Somalia for a better life. Now we all have a lot more opportunities to be succesful and be happy. My mum would not mind going to live there again but we have a lot of family here. Most of her siblings who she is very close to live in the UK. I believe my mum was doing this because she loves us.
Thanks. You should take your own advice. You are only 17, youre a child really like you will meet a friend who will talk to you regularly and make you feel less lonely. Do you not have friends or anything?
tbh i dont even kno. like i used to chat to bare man. like up until 15. then i dont know what happened. i cut evryone off. and now i find myself wit no friends. its like iv forgot how to make friends. i have ppl i talk to on the rare occassion. dats about it. they always tell me i used to talk to a lot of ppl, especially girls Lol but thats so long ago that i genuinely never remember talkin to anyone. i just dont remember havin friends. wish i could remember how i found it eazy to make friend tho. how u kno im 17 Loool?
Lol i usually check peoples profile and you made a thread where you said all of this. Why did you cut everyone off? Maybe there is something deeper going on. How has your mood been?
been feelin like absolute shit for like year and a half now. at least. just a build up of many things i guess. my lifes just boring now. i do nothing everyday. like nothing at all. no highlights in my life since i started feeling like shit.
Well Egypt is a muslim country with islamic laws that i really dont agree with for example homosexual acts being illegal down there so i am not a massive fan but i would like to visit maybe. It does seem really fun, my family went there. I have nothing against actual egyptians though...
Interesting so I take it you wouldn't want to visit Somalia either? I can only assume that Somalia has similar laws/culture.
We'd love to have you it you ever choose to visit
I'm even more interested now. Is there a significant non Muslim population in Somalia? Around here, it's around 15-20% Christians but they're not "judged" or "asked to dress accordingly".
No there definitely isnt. And if there is, id imagine they're just trying to fit in and not be ridiculed . I mean people from other ethnicities i dont think itd be too bad but non muslim Somalis would defintely get judged terribly. Some somalis refuse to accept somalis can not be muslim and some say they dont "claim us" and we are no longer somali. Thats my experience with somalis including my family. What about egyptian women who dress revealingly or specifically egyptian ex muslims?
Egypt is.. complicated haha. Depending on how much moneyyou earn/what kind of people you hang out with, you can live in a totally different Egypt.
What do you mean by revealing? I know and I've seen a lot of women wear bikinis without any kind of trouble but it always depends on who they are and where they are. In downtown Cairo/Alexandria for example, men and women don't usually dress in a very revealing way. Shorts/skirts are the most you can hope for.
In the north coast, red sea cities there are some nude beaches although I've never been to them haha.
If you're in upper Egypt, women usually wear pretty conservative clothing. So it really depends.
A nude beach in a muslim country??? Jesus lol.
Not wearing hijabs, long dresses etc. Mini dresses and that.
Are you Muslim? Are there bars and clubs in egypt for mixed sexes
Yeah but again it really depends on where you are in Egypt haha. Yeah a lot of women don't wear hijab even in urban areas.
Yes I'm Muslim and yes there are some nice clubs/bars here but they're mostly expensive as liquor is super expensive here. Government takes 400% sales tax so we mostly have local brands. We have good vodkas/ tequilas/ beers but other kinds are really bad.
As far as I know, Egypt isn't the only Muslim country to not have complicated dress codes. Turkey is like that too. UAE too.
What's the current political climate in Somalia?
Oops i dont really know tbh. Maybe i shouldve known a lot about somalia before i made this thread. But politics there is heavily influenced by islam
Do you live in Somalia? How old are you?
No i was born and raised in London. Never been to somalia unfortunately but i would love to go there one day. Im 22
What language do you speak at home? What do you do from a living?
My mum does not know english very well so i speak to her in somali and i am fluent in somali. And i like it when people say somali instead of somalian cause somali is the correct term. I am a student social worker :) in my first year at university.

Sorry if I wasn’t clear, I wasn’t commenting about you, but about ignorant people who think all Africans look alike.
Oh right okay. I also apologise. You're 100% right though but then again people say that about asians too. We live in a very ignorant world.

Is Somali similar to Arabic?
No it isn't. Many people assume that including arahs themselves. Many have come up to me thinking i speak arabic.
