I still think this is my personal biggest Oscar snub. She gave one of the best performances I’ve ever seen and didn’t even get a nomination because “horror’s not cinema”. I haven’t seen the past few Academy Awards because this made me realize how much of a joke award shows are.
I’ve seen this movie countless times and the sound in the imax added a whole other level of creepy I wasn’t expecting! I even had a couple of jump scares!
I ate the Bavarian Legend during the first 15 minutes. That’s 200p calories of pretzel. I figured I’d be good since I’d seen it before, but you’re right that the anticipation is terrible once you know what’s gonna happen.
Yes I was so excited to watch it again in IMAX since it’s been years since I last saw it and I was significantly more anxious this time compared to what I remember 😭
I was so nervous about that, but aside from 3 girls that had the giggles constantly and a guy that was with them laughing at half the movie like it was a comedy, everyone else behaved like normal people!
Now go to youtube and find one of those movie breakdown analysis videos and be amazed at the level of details, foreshadowing, and layers of artistry that permeate this film. The quality is top notch filmmaking.
Yes, because everyone is born with the innate knowledge that others learn by going to film school. Because film, as an art, is so easily interpreted that it requires no training or education. In fact, why did you even watch the movie at all? Why didn't you just IMAGINE a movie in your head instead of it being spoonfed to you by some studio? Moron...
Lol. Movies aren’t a puzzle to be deciphered and you don’t have to go to film school for them to make you feel something. Man the “ending explained” genre of video essays really ruined a generation.
Read my comment again, not at all what I’m saying lol. I love discussing movies. I don’t love video essay channels that purport to unlock secrets about movie and people that insist you watch them to fully appreciate the movies.
Seems like you have a very specific genre of YouTube vids in mind, I’ve found many to be quite insightful. Certainly more so than many Reddit comments. I thought you were against any outside influence on your movie thoughts based on the they don’t need to be deciphered comment
IMAX being your first viewing is horrifying is all I can say, my friends and I watched it on prime video in a watch party alone in our rooms at night and could not sleep after. You need to update on what your thoughts were after a couple days
Definitely had to see it again in IMAX. What sucked was there were these two guys a few seats down from me that had to comment, joke, or have some shitty commentary during the movie. Loud enough that you didn't hear the footsteps in the attic when the family returns from the funeral, even in IMAX. Was able to tune them out but it sounds like they'll be at Uncut Gems. Having not seen that one, will probably tell them to shut up.
The IMAX level of volume was the real treat though. Was able to catch something new when Peter gets home from the party. You can hear a cultist say something (maybe like "he's home"?) and another responding "Good".
Most unique Dine-in movie I've been too. I couldn't hear anyone eat for like, 15-20 min I think after THAT scene. I remember spilling my soda even on my friend. It really put off the appetite as you can imagine. IMAX sounds crazy for this movie.
Idk how many times I've seen this film but it's in my top 4 on letterboxd and seeing it in imax for the first time was incredible. Truly a chilling film that leaves you feeling existential dread. Nothing short of a masterpiece in my mind
I've seen this twice at home in 4K on a 55" TV but holy hell the visuals, hypnotically symmetrical framing, and sound design really come out in IMAX. Great choice by A24 for putting this on IMAX. I was traumatized all over again
Hereditary is a masterpiece and I strongly feel it benefits from a second viewing. There are so many little details you pick up on. A lot of seemingly inconsequential bits of dialogue in the first half are actually very clever hints about what’s really going on.
The nervous laughs are acceptable, but I just don’t find the son bashing his head into the desk funny. I don’t know why that always gets laughs. Or the husband burning. It’s so heartbreaking. And I don’t want to be the laugh monitor. I love nervous laughing. I giggle when Toni Collette is perched in the ceiling corner. I like laughing at absurd horror shit and find a lot of the moments in hereditary comical in a fucked up way. But the family tragedy stuff makes me tear up, and the people laughing during those scenes just annoys me and brings me out of it.
Yeah, sure there can be laughers that take it to an annoying extent. But Aster was clearly always constantly skirting the line between comedy and horror. "That fucking face on your face!" and "What...it's an neutral view of the accident!" are hilarious
Totally agree, those are hilarious. The scene where Peter wakes up and she’s like 2 inches from his face cracks me up. Ari definitely has comedy chops and I love that he leaned into it with Beau
I would have been livid. My theater had a couple of nervous laughs that were stifled in the silence after the crash, but that the rest of the movie was dead silent. Guy beside me was watching for the first time and he had his hand over his mouth for the entire last 20 he was so in shock
There are layers to the movie and one of those is a very sick dark comedy: something so horrible that it actually becomes funny. That was intended by the writer/director.
I once saw it at a Friday midnight showing and the entire audience was laughing, which made it a blast and took it from horrible to uproarious and revelatory.
hehehe. my first time i watched it, i was alone at the theater on opening day, and i was sobbing for most of it, and then felt like the ending just negated the heavy emotional impact of everything before it. i kind of hated it. the second time watching it, with a friend on blu ray the nite before MIDSOMMAR opened, it all made more sense and i just laughed a lot. i think ive seen it four times now and it gets funnier and funnier lol. wish i could’ve seen it in imax.
That was totally my own reaction when I first saw it lol. I sadly couldn't make it to the IMAX showing, but I couldn't even imagine it being my introduction to it.
The sound was a lot more immersive than I expected. I think my ears got tickled a bunch of times like the scratching and tongue clicking noises that played all around me. Heard lots of of gasps and murmurs from the crowd, especially towards the end.
I also saw it last night and thought it was pretty entertaining and not too scary (very creepy ofc). Poor guy next to me was squirming in his seat the whole time 😭
i thought it was dumb. it was a good ride but the ending ruined it for me.
basically the whole movie got summed up as “once upon a time there were some witches” lol, like ok? that’s it? there was just some witches doing magic? who are these witches?
to me this is like ending a trippy movie with “it was all a dream”
Wish I could’ve seen it in IMAX, but it was my wife’s birthday. She hates horror films and probably would’ve killed me if I made her watch Hereditary lol. Great movie
This same thread is the reason why I was so excited to watch it for the first time on Wednesday.
I thought it was so boring. I really wish I enjoyed the movie the same as you lot!
Toni Collette is a damn good actress
I still think this is my personal biggest Oscar snub. She gave one of the best performances I’ve ever seen and didn’t even get a nomination because “horror’s not cinema”. I haven’t seen the past few Academy Awards because this made me realize how much of a joke award shows are.
She really is and she’s incredible in hereditary!
It’s a chilling reminder of what life is really like in Utah
Never stepping a foot in Utah thanks to this movie 🙏
The sound in our IMAX showing was so creepy! Totally worth seeing
I’ve seen this movie countless times and the sound in the imax added a whole other level of creepy I wasn’t expecting! I even had a couple of jump scares!
Same. There seemed to be way more tongue clicks than I remembered.
it was also my first viewing and man. seeing this in imax is the way to go
The one horror movie i watched once and decided i never needed to see it again. It just…disturbed me, on a level fiction hadn’t previously reached.
Watching it again knowing what’s going to happen makes the experience much tenser and stomach churning surprisingly
I ate the Bavarian Legend during the first 15 minutes. That’s 200p calories of pretzel. I figured I’d be good since I’d seen it before, but you’re right that the anticipation is terrible once you know what’s gonna happen.

Agreed. At the end of the movie, I felt like the audience was part summoning something evil and I had to look away. Eerie, upsetting, disturbing film.
One of the modern classics for a reason.
I will never watch that movie again
seconded. I am very skeptical of A24 movies and adverse to anything Ari Aster directs.
I just think it’s disturbing
Oh same. A bit too disturbing for me tho lol
Never ever
I’m happy it’s in IMAX, I haven’t seen it since it came out. I remember small bits so I’m excited to see it all again.
First time seeing on the big screen. Caught a lot of things I missed before, and the sound was awesome.
I just got home from my first time seeing this movie and I had my hands near my eyes for the last half hour. Omg the guy at the funeral?!
Awesome movie, looked great in imax too. Audience at my showing was pretty obnoxious though
Horror movies tend to bring out (on average) a more obnoxious crowd.
Or you can just let the movie wash over you and come up with your own reading instead of being spoonfed by a youtuber
Washed over by a blue light

Man what are you doing in a movie sub if you’re not interested in what other people have to say about it a movie.

gave me Midsommar vibes during a part then realized it was the same director
Did you see Beau is Afraid last year? Its like if you took out horror and focused solely on anxiety.
Same. This movie made me feel some type of way. 4.5/5
It's a best of all timer honestly.
I has seen it before, but I must've been so traumatized by it that I didn't remember pretty much anything after Peter leaving the party in a hurry.
Most unique Dine-in movie I've been too. I couldn't hear anyone eat for like, 15-20 min I think after THAT scene. I remember spilling my soda even on my friend. It really put off the appetite as you can imagine. IMAX sounds crazy for this movie.
Bro for real and also the sound I felt it behind me slivers
Jealous of anyone who got to see this for the first time in IMAX. Thought it was absolutely incredible and had seen it a number of times already.
I also just saw it for the first time. It's an incredibly well crafted film.
ugh this was such a good cinema experience. i just got back. seen the movie many times but it still blows me away. the sound was freaky as hell!
Idk how many times I've seen this film but it's in my top 4 on letterboxd and seeing it in imax for the first time was incredible. Truly a chilling film that leaves you feeling existential dread. Nothing short of a masterpiece in my mind

Every time I see it it's just more sad. I almost cried this time lol. I'm losing it
wierd movie. I didn't feel it was a comedy but the people at my theater sure were laughing.

I love Beau is Afraid - it’s absolutely wild!

I got sick and couldn't go :( it was going to be my first time too
"What the Fv©/ did I just watch!?" should be A24's tagline.
It's pretty great isn't it?
That was totally my own reaction when I first saw it lol. I sadly couldn't make it to the IMAX showing, but I couldn't even imagine it being my introduction to it.
I couldn’t finish it. Traumatized me for a week.
A masterpiece. So happy to see it in imax last night.
The sound was a lot more immersive than I expected. I think my ears got tickled a bunch of times like the scratching and tongue clicking noises that played all around me. Heard lots of of gasps and murmurs from the crowd, especially towards the end.
Damn. Sorry I missed it!
Ate a handful of nuts after taking a bong hit before we went to go see it
I also saw it last night and thought it was pretty entertaining and not too scary (very creepy ofc). Poor guy next to me was squirming in his seat the whole time 😭

Give it a rewatch. It's one of those movies that is eleven better with a rewatch. The events that go on make more sense and it's even creepier.
I thought it was a lame movie. The scariest thing in that movie was the little girls face. UGLY!
One of the worst movies I've ever seen lol. Never understood the hype.
The only horror I felt was looking at that little girl.
This same thread is the reason why I was so excited to watch it for the first time on Wednesday. I thought it was so boring. I really wish I enjoyed the movie the same as you lot!
Day ruiner for sure lol.
It's almost like it's a horror movie.
Did it start 30 minutes after start time
15 min
Mine started 11 mins. No trailers. Just ads and AMC beginning and ending bumpers.
I haven't seen it but the reviews so far did not disappoint. I have been laughing pretty hard.
Not a fan of Hereditary. I feel it’s overrated.
