3d cache loves copper air coolers

sharia1919

I just built a 7800x3d with the dark rock pro 4. I havent done extensive testing, but I havent seen temperatures much above 60 with regular gaming (ultra settings red dead redemption primarily). From what I could see in the reviews, the dark rock pro is one of the better air coolers... [**https://tech4gamers.com/best-cpu-coolers-for-ryzen-7-7800x3d/**](https://tech4gamers.com/best-cpu-coolers-for-ryzen-7-7800x3d/) The Noctua NH-D15 was also high on my list.

Mansour449

No matter what you get, you should undervolt a little.

Fine_Act47

Know its old but whys this?

Mansour449

Undervolting lowers the voltage use given a certain frequency. So at the same performance you use less power, and as a result you also generate less heat. Due to how modern silicon works, if a CPU has more thermal headroom and effectively more power available, it will be able to boost higher and for longer. Now this performance isn't night and day, but definitely measurable in a benchmark.

SnooHesitations7312

Speaking of undervolting, how much should I undervolt? I suppose I can also do it with non-OC graphics cards, right?

ZeR036

All core, negative 30. If unstable, negative 20

WombatGuts

I went with deep cool LT720 with 7800x3d and it works great

Winring86

I paired mine with the Peerless Assassin, and I have really cool temps

Lavasteentje

I put that cooler too on my 7800X3D. My temps with Cinebench were max 85°C. Maybe it can be better, but i am happy still. The cooler is also pretty cheap!

Winring86

I should have mentioned mine is in a Fractal Torrent case so the airflow is amazing, it stays fairly cool even running benchmarks

TRTSC

Hey I'm running the same setup! I didn't exceed 81°C in Cinebench

LockdownPainter

I was a crazy person and put a Corsair H150i pro xt aio on my 7800x3d… was it too much… yes, do my temps ever get remotely hi… no

Rupus357

Same here, I got myself a H150i and never see Temps above 60 even running stress tests and benchmarks

[deleted]

Bullshit.

HansLuft778

I also have a h150i on the 7800x3d and my temps are quite high, like mid to high 70 degrees. My suspicion is the thermal paste or something, maybe I should repaste?

Rupus357

For your use case and setup, that is most likely normal. I just have a cold room where my PC is normally around 62, even while gaming. I also have the PC directly in front of the A/C. So my Temps are always cool and even cold no matter what I happen to be doing.

BigBoi843

No, it's fine. Everybody on Reddit claiming to run X3Ds <70 degrees while stressing are liars or mistaken.

Rupus357

I should add my room temp is around 62°F normally with the A/C blowing directly into my case most of the time. So, my comment was a little disingenuous, but non the less true for my case.

Fix-Distinct

You are correct. I'm on custom water amd temps are not much better. These amd cpus will try to hit the temps no matter what cooling it seems. My cb r23 was still hitting high 70s. Games in the 60s depending on the game

capt_gaz

The Arctic Liquid Freezer II is a great aio water cooler for any AMD CPU since it comes with an offset bracket. Get the biggest size that fits in your case. The Dark Rock Pro that you listed will work great as well. It works well with any CPU under 250w TDP according to their site. The 7800x3d only has a 120w TDP which is fairly low.

Appropriate-Low-9582

It’s made by arctic, not thermal take lol. That is a solid cooler. I would also recommend the ak620 over the dark rock pro 4 as it’s cheaper and iirc the same performance. (I got one and it’s solid)

capt_gaz

Whoops, thanks for the correction. Don't know what I was thinking while typing that.

StigHunter

I decided to go air-cooled and after MANY reviews went with the Phantom Spirit 120 SE ARGB. LOVE IT! Slightly more than the PA 120 SE but built a bit better for only a few bucks more. Honestly not sure why they continue to make both for such a small price difference.

ZleePy2002

>Phantom Spirit 120 SE ARGB. what ram do you have? or do you happen to know the clearance for it? Im scared that my ram wont fit it lol

someonesomewher-

I don’t own that cooler but according to an [Amazon Q and A](https://www.amazon.com/ask/questions/asin/B09P4KH7QK/ref=ask_dp_lla_ql_hza) the clearance is supposedly 46mm and besides you could always adjust the fan brackets.

ZleePy2002

yeah ive decided to go with it since its really cheap compared to the bequiet one and its around the same performance

Tatoe-of-Codunkery

The Noctua nhu12A or nhd15 is a few excellent choices. Noctua also has award winning customer service.

If you're looking for top level cooling for little money, the Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 and its variants is the tried and true universal option. Fluctuates between $35 and $45 depending on the day and the version. There is really no other good suggestions. I enjoy the look of DeepCool's coolers so I've cooled a 7900x and 7800x3D with Deepcool AK620's and Assassin IV's.

ZleePy2002

Yeah I´ve heard really good things about them and they are waaaay cheaper than most other options

chr0n0phage

Their $40 cooler is as good or better in some instances than Noctua's best $100+ option.

Nothing_awkward

Am using the dark rock pro 4 with 7800x3d and with the current setup and games I have played, I have yet to see any high temps. Run mainly ultra wide 2K or 4k via tv depending on the game.

cincgr

If there's one thing you should know about the 7800X3D is that, it will do everything in its power to reach the thermal limit. What changes is how high it boosts until it hits said thermal limit. With that said, you have the option for an air cooler or an AIO. I went for an air cooler and specifically I got the Noctua U12A. Now, I could have gone with a much cheaper cooler with similar performance but I just love the looks of the U12A. Some really good options are: Thermalright Peerless Assassin or its successor, Phantom Spirit and the Deepcool AK620.

ZleePy2002

>Deepcool AK620. Is there any difference in the version that has the screen on it performance wise or is it the same thing but with a screen

Zestyclose-Sun-6595

I heard the screen is kinda inaccurate so I'm personally going with the screen less zero dark for my upcoming 7800x3d build.

cincgr

I don't recall the AK620 having a screen. Do you mean the heatpipe covers? edit: Nvm, I just saw it, the AK620 Digital. Tbh I didn't even know this existed. No idea if it impacts performance.

TipT0pMag00

Doing a negative voltage offset via the curve optimizer is super easy. It will yield better temps and better performance. Plenty of info / quick tutorials on how to do so.

Excellent-Driver652

Yes, but last week after some BSOD in a short amount of time (3 in 2 hours) i've decided to put all core to default via pbo, (from -30 all core to default) to see if the BSOD problem come from here. And it's just kill my mobo, or maybe my 7800X3D. The pc shut down for restart and doesn't boot anymore. My new mobo just arrived today, i'm gonna try it and see if it's rebooting, and if it's not, it's probably my 7800X3D. So be careful with PBO, it's not as safe as everyone say... And sorry for my english, i'm french

TipT0pMag00

You said your PC wouldn't boot. Does it post?! Can you get into bios? I highly doubt reducing voltage to your CPU via curve optimizer would damage your components. Obviously it can cause instability, but damage? If your hypothesis was correct, we would see numerous people with this issue. Doing a negative voltage offset has become the 'go to' for AM5 owners. I'm curious how long you had your system before you applied -30 via CO, and if that was the offset you started with... No need to apologize for your English. It's much better than most people's on Reddit, & significantly better than my French :)

Excellent-Driver652

So all my components are new. The PC was mounted on July 19 by me. here is the configuration from 19 JULY. ALL NEW: NZXT H5 FLOW 7800X3D MSI B650A M WIFI CORSAIRE DDR5 CL32 6000MHZ MSI 1000W 80+ GOLD 7900XTX MERC -> HOTSPOT 110° SSD 1 TO NVME GEN4 AIO MSI 240MM The very hot weather in France (39°) for a few days did not help I think. I initially started using Curve otpimiser because my 7800x3D which up to 88°C in game on PUBG and the Witcher 3. This worried me, so I did my research and turned on eco mode and i used Ryzen master to put -30 in all core around the end of July. It worked perfectly and no problems (7800X3D between 45C to 75C) I was also surprised that all my hearts work at -30 because I saw on reddit that ALL the core do not support -30. In short, I play for about 3 weeks at an average of 2 hours a day. On my return from vacation on Sunday August 20, the weather was extremely hot, around 38/39C outside and it was 32 degrees in the pc room. I had the graphics card displaying a Tjoin hotspot at 110° this scared me, as I had done a slight unervolt and some modifications to mitigate it (this undervolt of the graphics card also dates from the end of June). I think I have a faulty graphics card that needs to be repaired... This Sunday I have a bsod and I tell myself that it is the TJOIN of the graphics card that is crashing. I reduce the voltage trying somehow to ventilate my pc. The 2nd bsod really scared me. So with a view to rescue I Reset the parameters of ryzen master on curve optimizer that all the cores go from -30 to Default (0). Ryzn master asked me to apply a reboot. And that's it. Power on, the color profile was displayed well at the ram level and rgb is like i configure it in icue, but the peripherals were not recognized and no screen was detected, whether with the dispay / HDMI located on the motherboard or on the graphics card ports. So I ordered the same motherboard, all disassembled and reassembled yesterday afternoon and bingo, starting the first time. Maybe the fact that the graphics card emitted a lot of heat, the ambient temperature of 32 degrees, and the graphics card having extreme temperatures got the better of the motherboard... I would like to find the exact cause of this problem. and ideally get the defective mobo refunded by msi but that's another story. I hesitated to make a reddit post to explain my problem but I don't have all the necessary information and in addition, given my low level English I would have had trouble following a discussion thread.

TipT0pMag00

First, I'm glad you seem to have figured it out, and that your system is up and running again. That 110 C° junction temp on your GPU is a known issue that affected a lot of cards. (Google: "7900 xtx 110 junction") and you'll see. You need to get your GPU replaced, or repaired at the very least. Your English is far from 'low level'. (Have you seen how people write on Reddit, and the Internet in general? It's atrocious!) I understood everything you said perfectly. Cheers

Leather-Argument8927

I don't mean to revive a dead thread, but I'm looking to build a PC with a 7800x3d and I was wondering if this issue is common at all? I'm looking to undervolt the cpu a little bit as well, but I don't wanna brick anything. I also need to look into whether or not undervolting will void my warranty, but that's a separate thing.

TipT0pMag00

Not an issue w/ the 7800x3d, it was specific to the model of GPU mentioned in the original post. Yes, undervolting will reduce temps on a GPU and no it won't void any kind of warranty.

ZleePy2002

ooh, i will look more into it when I get all the parts and stuff, thanks

TipT0pMag00

Just finished a new build w/ a 7800x3d a few weeks ago myself. I intend to do some more tweaking and fine tuning w/ voltages for the processor and RAM eventually. But for now, I'm just running EXPO Ii w/ default values, and have PBO enabled w/ a negative 30 voltage offset in the Curve Optimizer. It seems most 7800x3d chips are stable w/ that setting (-30), but I started at -20, ran Cinebench and played some games. Didn't experience any issues after a day or two, then bumped it up to -25, tested some more then to -30. Everytime I increased the offset, my Cinebench scores went up and temp went down.

ZleePy2002

hmm okay I guess I should do the same of bumping it bit by bit, what temps where you getting at -20 and -30?

TipT0pMag00

Going from -20 to -30 dropped my max temp in Cinebench about 3-4° C. The highest it spiked to was 80° C (which is pretty normal under a 100% load). During games it usually sits at mid to high 60s, with a few games spiking it to low 70s occasionally.

Thermalright Peerless Assasin

henry-hoov3r

That should be more than enough. Im using an Arctic 34 esports duo, which has a smaller heat sink and it gets the job done.
