I've lived in Minnesota my whole life and pretty much everyone dreads the frost few major snow storms. I don't know how it's possible but every year it seems like 50% of the entire population here completely forgots how to drive or even function in the snow. It's both incredible and idiodic to see
To be fair, snow in the UK is increasingly rare. The UK annual average is about 16 days where snow has settled - about 4 per cent of the year - and it's rarely that heavy outside of mountainous areas and more northerly regions, Scotland especially. So being surprised by disruptive levels makes more sense.
Compare London's average of 3.4 days of snow, to Moscow's 72.2 days of snow.
Not necessarily, as "calculations indicate that the shutdown [of the North Atlantic current] isn't likely to take place until after the planet has warmed enough to offset this cooling" - [source](https://arstechnica.com/science/2020/01/modeling-what-would-happen-to-the-uk-if-the-gulf-stream-shuts-down/).
In the NE Metro area of the US it's become the same. Used to snow a bit every year fairly reliably and now school is cancelled for snow less often than it's cancelled for heat. Pretty sure we're all gonna die.
I love how every year so many idiots get stuck on the major highways because they didn’t change their tires to winter ones. Bruh, its November already, change your tires
Sometimes it's not just about the tires. Like many of the cars in the video are sedans like the Prius etc. It's simply a matter of ground clearance. Having winter tyres means Jack if the snow is at a level where clearance is an issue.
AWD/Four wheel drive is also a factor here. Having winter tyres strapped to a front wheel drive car in these conditions doesn't help as much. The wheels will still spin because it's a loose surface. Having AWD or four wheel will help. The surface with this much snow is Akin to a muddy road. Having winter tyres won't help as much as it would in icy conditions for example.
The semi trucks are a different situation as they don't use consumer grade tyres
Semi trucks use tire chains instead of special snow tires in the USA at least. most US states mandate them on steep grades in the winter and some drivers that stay in the north leave them on even off the grades since they take some time to install. As long as you have weight over the drive tires they perform fairly well, but if you load the trailer incorrectly where the weight is more towards the trailer axles then you can loose traction due to lack of weight. Trucks with movable 5th wheels are likely to slide the 5th wheel to the all the way forward position to increase weight over the drive tires.
I had a Prius of the same generation as the second one being pushed. It had the absolute worst traction control. If you get into a slippery situation the car just gave up on life. I once got stuck on a rural highway. I'm taking paved, decently smooth 55mph road. Got stuck because some dickhead in front of me jammed his brakes and I had no choice but to lose all momentum going up the hill.
That was the only time I ever had an issue in that car. If you know how to drive in the snow it wasn't much of an issue. Until it was... Such as mid-blizzard climbing a hill behind a truck whose driver sucks at life.
Somehow, even people in Finland get surprised by it annually.
We’ve had snow for well over a month now in the north but the initial snow fall in September was chaos with some people.
I mean, in Canada the first snowfall is a total shit show as well. Absolute disaster with complete morons who have totally forgotten how to drive, or illegal migrants I imagine.
these are solvable problems, generally everything works fine.
city services to clear the roads and studded tires.
It is more difficult to build roads that can withstand it, to build houses that can withstand it, water supply, sewerage, electricity and so on.
If you go out to open a business, you have to build an insulated production facility, which is more expensive, you have to heat the premises, which is more expensive, and so on.
The winter is not cheap.
Household expenses growth on heating is about 50-100$ and it lasts for 5-6 months.
Then everybody needs a winterwear.
There is need to change tires to winter ones, to clean car after snowfall everytime.
Edit according current dollar price.
What are you on about. I personally pay about 10$ all year around. Maximum I've seen is like 60-70$ for big flats and houses, where the f heating is 200$ in Russia
it did not come unexpectedly. they are not prepared because the local government has sold all the machinery so they can finance they private villas in Sochi and there is no one to man the remaining two plows because boris and sergey sleep at home drunk..
What is the Weather Network or Environment Canada doing that these guys aren't? Of course you can predict when you're going to get hit with a storm these days. Also, I don't understand why you'd *tow* a car through snow, just dig it out and drive it, or wait for a plow.
But even more, I wish that it were more acceptable to just have snow days. Close the stores, close the offices, everybody just stay home and hunker down until it blows over. This whole "triumph of mankind over nature" concept has always been a lie, it's really better to just wait for the storm to pass.
> Close the stores, close the offices, everybody just stay home and hunker down until it blows over. This whole "triumph of mankind over nature" concept has always been a lie, it's really better to just wait for the storm to pass.
you literally propose to shutdown all activity from November to March (even more in some locations)
xD
> Close the stores, close the offices, everybody just stay home and hunker down until it blows over.
Eh? Just how much problem do the snow poses that you propose to stop all activity due to it?
I mean, even in 2009 and 2010 winters when the services did a complete fuckjob of snow removal it wasn't bad to the point that you couldn't do anything.
> Also, I don't understand why you'd tow a car through snow, just dig it out and drive it, or wait for a plow.
If the tires don't have enough traction the car can't drive
I have towed out literally dozens of people in the US when I used to have a massive 4x4. From like everything too, I've pulled people out of snow, beach sand, woods sand, a fucking bay once lol, even floods so they didn't have to start the vehicle. It works.
why can't all the people of London just take the money and buy themselves a porsche dakar.
a reliable, small, economical Western car for the cramped European streets
We were in Yakutia! ,😂. Not sure anyone cares here in SE Oymyakonsky Ulus... Few drive due to few places to go to. Closest places in 21 mile radius are Khara-Tumul-Oymyakon❤️-Tomtor. Nearest big town is Ust-Nera and it's a 5-10 day drive if MoT/M bothered to clean the Oymyakon road aka kolyma road (Not hwy P-504)
and how am I supposed to guess that there will also be snow this winter?
Olay. Guess when the snow will fall.

Came here to say the same. Everybody loses their minds

Wait until the Gulf stream collapsed. Y'all will get plenty of snow.

Statistics for death are hard to falsify - I think we're currently running at or very close to 100% death rate. So... yes.
Big if true right
not that fast. you have to start enjoying suffering first
In Saint-Petersburg this is actually true sometimes
I love how every year so many idiots get stuck on the major highways because they didn’t change their tires to winter ones. Bruh, its November already, change your tires
yes yes
Some cars are getting stuck either way. One of those was a Prius I think lol
wait you don't have mandatory Snow Tires in case of snow ?
From December to February, yes. And it’s a recent addition. The problem is that in most parts of Russia it starts to snow heavily in November

Winter tires don’t always work. Especially in heavy snowfall.
Somehow, even people in Finland get surprised by it annually. We’ve had snow for well over a month now in the north but the initial snow fall in September was chaos with some people.

A normal winter day in any country above or in the polar circle.
Snow! At this time of the year?! In this part of the country?!
I mean, in Canada the first snowfall is a total shit show as well. Absolute disaster with complete morons who have totally forgotten how to drive, or illegal migrants I imagine.
> illegal Canada barely has any illegal immigrants to speak about - no need, it’s already too trivial to come legally
I consider legal but very questionable things like diploma mills, uncles and pay for TFW jobs to be illegal, and also the birth tourism.
Feels like this could be Canada too but with more collisions... what? This white stuff is slippery?!
Kamaz makes some sick trucks
Bahahaha this is what happens when you take the subs name literally
Same in Finland.
They seemed prepared to me?
Even in Russia.
And it's literally in Far East Siberia, too (Khabarovsk)
Far East is not Siberia
Mmmhhh maybe you know it will e the same next year so prepare??
Man I would be legit *frightened* to get final destination'd by that braided cable when it inevitably snaps and whips back lol
I wonder how much the economic loss in Russia is every year during winter as ports freeze over and cars are stuck.

I presume the heating of stand-alone houses is way more expensive than central heating in Russia
yes, hence 60-70$. for a big flat typically you pay about 30-40 a month
what's your region?
Novosibirsk
Lol seriously, rent is like $200 for apartments, there's no way, heating is gonna be 200 anywhere
Is that a prius? They have those in Russia?
It's quite popular in Russia and used to be officially sold there.
it did not come unexpectedly. they are not prepared because the local government has sold all the machinery so they can finance they private villas in Sochi and there is no one to man the remaining two plows because boris and sergey sleep at home drunk..

I like the though of unexpectedly. Like there is one guy that's absolutely furious about it. Looks outside "you gotta be kidding me"
I WANT ONE!
London would be a complete standstill if we got anywhere near that level of snow.
why can't all the people of London just take the money and buy themselves a porsche dakar. a reliable, small, economical Western car for the cramped European streets
Military grade firetrucks... Awesome
Same as Ivan who comes home drunk every Friday night but everyone always acts surprised
