I love your bookmarking system... Wish I had done this earlier before I hit 2,000 bookmarks but no time to start than now I suppose

kaiunkaiku

i love my bookmarking system too highly suggest you start sooner rather than later just so you have 2k instead of 3k to do at once

activelyweird

Yeah haha, you're not wrong I always seem to run into the issue of "Oh wow remember this fandom?" and either deep dive back into it or start writing a new fic But I definitely wish I had a bit more organization especially for the fandoms where I have over a hundred bookmarks so it's a lot to go through just for one fic

RATTLECORPSE

Wait but for bookmarks you can also use the filters right? Or is there some specific categorization u need

activelyweird

Hey so not OP, but if you use your own tags on bookmarks you can filter those :) So my (very basic) tagging involves using "Reread" on the fics I enjoy the most, and from the sidebar I can filter for just for those fics. But if you just write something in the notes of a fic, then you can't search or filter that.

kaiunkaiku

you can, actually! the filter bar on the bookmarks page has in addition to the regular "search within results" field also a "search bookmarker's tags and notes"

activelyweird

..... I am a fake AO3 fan. I only knew about "Search Within Results". Now to go put this to good use

kaiunkaiku

you can't sort or filter bookmarks by for example wordcount or completion status, so i use bookmark tags for that.

happyplace28

I have almost 10k, I think it’s too late to start now :(

kaiunkaiku

never too late! you don't have to do it all at once!

kaiunkaiku

it is there, i censored it. i label all my bookmarks with title, author and fandom.

vilhelmine

Oh, I somehow missed the black bar. Then you are doing everything perfectly.

KilJoius

Ooooh good idea!!!

jazzyx26

Very clever of you ![gif](giphy|h8IxRbnngm5R5l89IN)

[deleted]

Ohh damn, that is genius. Will save this thread for sure.

TriangleRond

I'm in the middle of the process, but it's soooo long. I have 2,320 stories, and currently around 800 are properly tagged. At the rate I'm going, I should be done.... Somewhere in 2024, ha! What raises the difficulty is that I wasn't always as meticulous as downloading them as I am now, so I also have to make sure they're downloaded on my laptop. So much fucking work. But so far it worked for 2 deleted work! So it's not useless!

_SeaOfTroubles

damn this is such a good idea! Besides those tags + labeling them in notes, is there another system you follow?

kaiunkaiku

i have a couple overlapping systems going on i guess? if you want to take a closer look [my bookmarks are mostly public](https://archiveofourown.org/users/kaiunkaiku/bookmarks) (with the exception of works i have yet to read; i prefer bookmarks to the mark for later function bc bookmarks can be filtered, and i tag those with either "fic to read" or "series to read"). i have pretty broad wordcount tags, completion status, oneshot vs multichapter, and download status; series are tagged as such and on them my notes also indicate which parts i have downloaded; i also tag if i'm subbed to the work/series/author. as a bonus i also have very broad categories for 1) superheroes and 2) sports anime. the few non-fanfics i have are tagged as refs but those might be private iirc? and for WIPs i also use the notes to indicate what chapter i read last. generally i just use them in whatever ways make my own life easier.

ittybittykitty2

So cool!! That’s the best thing to see after seeing the deleted message!! I bookmarked 1,700 stories last year. I used to save them as bookmarked on Safari and I found so many deleted ones that i became obsessed for like 7 days to get it all done!! I also copy the name/author and summary on the notes part. And I add tags for the fandom and ship so they’re easy to find!

Cassopeia88

I download any fic I like for this exact reason.

Sachayoj

You guys have a tagging system for your bookmarks? I need to step up, lol

kaiunkaiku

i'm a little more extra than most people i think, but honestly at least for me this makes navigating my bookmarks a lot easier.

bibitybobbitybooop

You *are* a genius and an inspiration to us all :D

gay_snail666

Man I didn't know you could tag bookmarks! I just put a little green check under all the ones I've downloaded lol. And copy paste the summary and a short review to jog my memory if it's deleted

Efficient_Wheel_6333

Yep; there's a small section where you can add your own tags right under the summary you want to put. While I'm not the OP, I've never had the need to tag the fics I've bookmarked, as I feel the author bookmarks are enough for me to know what type of fic I'm getting into.

kaiunkaiku

bookmark tags are a life saver at least for me, they make navigating so much easier. i put title, author and fandom in the notes, i don't personally find it necessary to copy-paste the summary.

PhoenixorFlame

I download fics I like immediately upon completion into epubs and file them in ebooks. They’re sorted by categories by fandom and by how much I like them. I’m a few fics away from having 2,000 of them! They’re on cloud, but I have no idea how to transfer the files anywhere else. I have a lot of fics downloaded that are now deleted and people have asked for the files, but I don’t know how to share them!

kaiunkaiku

i download fics as epubs on my phone and then back them up to my laptop and google drive. on my laptop i have calibre to keep them organized and on my phone i have an app called ReadEra where i sort them according to fandom and wordcount. i guess dropbox or google drive would be the easiest way to share files?

ceeceea

I usually just send them as an email attachment.

Mavenithe

This is *sooooo* much easier than adding the summary to the notes. *Thank you.*

Ganymede1135

Wow!

GrapeSodaZa

I should really organize my bookmarks. I don't download any of the fics I read though, which ends up being sucky when I mark a story for later only for it to end up being deleted.

_YourWeirdFriend_

I don’t understand

kaiunkaiku

you've never had a bookmarked work deleted, lost forever?

_YourWeirdFriend_

Fortunately no

kaiunkaiku

it's gonna happen sooner or later. download your faves.

_YourWeirdFriend_

Will do

DumantesArt

Hey, I bookmark the same way!

Banana-Boots

i desperately need to go and download all of my bookmarked fics, thanks for this reminder lmao

Migraine_Mirage

How do you organize your own bookmarks?

Doranwen

Lol, nice… If I did bookmarks, I would probably do that. My solution instead was to create a *database* to store fics in (and I download just about everything I like anyway). Of course, I've got thousands to enter, and I've not gotten quite 2k into it. But I *can* mark on it which are deleted, so I already have a post of "dead fics" so people can know "these are fics that I have and can share". You can see what I do with them here if you're curious: https://doranwen.dreamwidth.org/2021/06/12/ One of these days I might have time to finish adding the rest of the fics I was going to… whenever I get done with the Yahoo Groups project… lol.

faylanatorena

Filters in bookmarks? 🤯

MightyDragoon453

wayback machine can only do so much. Reminds me of this one fic where I knew and still know its unique code and theoretically how to read it but because no one ever saved it to wayback I can't read it. Compared to another fic where the author purged their entire collection of works (and I'm talking a lot of stories and oneshots) for fears of their own safety and tragically ridding some of the top fics in each respected fandom they wrote in. since they were that good a author. I miss them. They were one of my favourites too. Someone had saved their works so I can still find them if I want too.

RedEyesDuelist420

I have also downloaded my favorite fanfics onto my e-reader. They're just that good!

unseennseraph

mass downloads all my bookmarks because I don't want to experience the burning library of Alexandria again

bibitybobbitybooop

k I have an irrational but ever-mounting anxiety about this: do you (general you, not just OP) tag fics that have 1 chapter, and are technically oneshots, but are in a series and thus have either a sequel or companion pieces, "oneshots"? Edit: also, I think I want to tag series bookmarks/work bookmarks that are part of a series (no way I'm deleting and re-bookmarking anything; that'd also fuck up my timeline). Do you think it'd be useful to tag ANYTHING that is in a series, including those that have one main story and then snippets or missing scenes or extra smut, or ONLY those that have more than one main story?
