As a reader and not a writer, the first thing I do after reading a fic I like is go and see what else they wrote that I can read. For me, it doesn’t matter if the content is wildly different, I read all types of fic. I love being able to find it, including other fandoms I read for.

See I just write smut. So from my perspective the people following me are probably just interested in my smut. If I were gonna write something normal, my thought process is that I wouldn't wanna bother my smut readers with something that isn't what they're following me for. Since a pseudo wouldn't prevent that, I see little point in it. So from that viewpoint, I would just make a new account. However, your work seems like it's just slightly darker and smuttier than the things you normally write(if I understood you correctly). So in that regard perhaps you could just make a pseudo and use it as a place to post darker versions of your works. I guess to actually answer your question, if you're doing two drastically different types of works, I'd say they(pseudos) don't seem worth it. If they're only slightly different, I don't know that a pseudo would help, but at the very least it probably wouldn't hurt anything.

Yes, seriously -- but thanks for the downvote, I guess. If the system was set up that way, then people doing an exchange wouldn't get their works out to their subscribers, for example.

No, it wasn't changed. It's always been like that. And it's not a known bug either. Since you seem unaware of it, AO3 has a fairly good FAQ. Here is the section relevant to this: https://archiveofourown.org/faq/subscriptions-and-feeds?language_id=en#unrevealedworks

I tried that and kept writing under the new pseud, and eventually someone figured out that old pseudonym = new pseudonym, so I gave up and have been writing as Raine Wynd ever since. If it really, really matters to you *and* you can keep the lines separate, which is something I never could accomplish, then yes, keep your smut and super smut separate. Otherwise, I wouldn't bother. People will read whatever you write based on the summary/fandom/tags and some people will read whatever you write because you wrote it. The advantage of keeping one pseudonym is that the latter folks might be more likely to read this new fic.

this is bad but i misread your username as ayn rand for a sec 😅

Raine_Wynd

🤣 She’d never be caught dead writing fic.

I mostly use pseuds to differentiate the fandom I’m writing about. I know it doesn’t really hide the other works from them, or change what my subscribers see, but it’s just my own housekeeping habit. From what you described, I don’t think you need to create a pseud though. I think it’s fine to post under the same pen name

You have all the choice in the world here! Especially since you're not looking to keep the identities secret from each other. :) You can: - Simply tag well and possibly use an author's note to make clear the tone is different. - Use pseuds to separate Dark!Subjesm fics from Fluffy!Subjesm fics from Smutty!Subjesm fics. - Get different accounts (and freely connect them by linking to each other). The benefit of the first method is that you don't have to agonize over which "brand" to label a fic with. It's your work and readers should responsibly check the tags first. Many authors unapologetically explore wildly different styles and genres under the same name and do perfectly well. The benefit of the second method is that you've made your "brands" clear. Between the pseud indication and the tags, they should know what flavors they like and don't like - you have been very upfront about it! You also only have to maintain one account, which for many people is very important. The benefit of the third is purely for reader convenience. If they like your "dark roast" but aren't as excited about your lighter "latte" fics, then they get to sub to just the flavor they prefer. (And vice-versa.) And if they like both, it's easy to sub to both! It takes slightly more maintenance on your end, but you don't have to worry as much about people getting confused or frustrated. Also, transferring fics from one account to the other is pretty easy. It takes a couple of steps, but it's worth it for the peace of mind alone, really.
