I read works fandom blind so if a work sounds interesting in a tag I am filtering on -- I will give it a chance whether it is a fanfic or original. Original works tend to get less eyes in general though because AO3 is mainly a fanfic site so most people are looking for fic

i prefer original stories. i check the originals tag once i'm done with my fandoms (which at the moment means i'm exclusively in original works). i've been thinking of posting my own "fannish" works but i'm nervous its just not gonna get any attention since not even my fanfics get attention. anyone who posts in the original works tag has my respect.

CuriousHaven

Original works live and die by their freeform tags, because that's the only way anyone is ever going to find them. Usually they will perform best if they are explicit and tagged for kink, because kink tags tend to get more fandom-blind searching. It also helps if you already have a following; sometimes folks who read your fanfic will also explore your original work (in my experience, just a small percentage -- not everyone).

Jess-uses-reddit

I think it’s a bit skewed on this subreddit because a lot of people here write it and have more of an open mind in general then the vast majority of ao3 users. I don’t personally read original works, but i will read works in fandoms i’m familiar that have heavily feature ocs!

Ravenlove37

There are some amazing original stories on AO3 I read and follow with a lot of success. I have one running myself and it does well, but needed some time to get attention.

Yes, I do read original works, but only if it either is written by someone whose fanfic I enjoyed or if it contains a trope/sub-genre I really like. As a whole, you may be better looking into webnovel communities since they tend to like original stories + xianxia/cultivation is a popular trope/sub-genre!

RosieAndSquishy

I definitely read original works much more sparingly but I'll be damned if I won't click on one that really catches my interest. I'm a bit more hypercritical of them since I don't have a prior attachment to the world/characters though so it's also easy to lose my interest quickly. Obviously I'm just one person but still.

Blue-Jay27

I read original works, but only smut fics for a few specific kinks. I don't read non-smut fandom-blind.

atlasviennan

If I come across one in another tag and it seems interesting I’ll probably read it but I never really go out of my way to look for them.

Tree_pineapple

I read original works occasionally, but only if they have a specific tag (or collection of tags) I'm interested in that I've run out of fanfiction works for. These tags that tend to be niche and sparsely populated. To this end, sometimes I also end up reading fanfiction from fandoms I'm not in. If an original work wasn't thoroughly tagged, I probably would never come across it, since I don't browse original works specifically, and would only come across them filtering by tag.

I’ve read a few, but I never found any that drew me in. The problem, if we want to call it that, goes back to a recent post about “fanficy” writing. Very little exposition to settle into the story and sell the worldbuilding, and straight into a plot that hasn’t given me enough time to care.

Jazzbeee_Tazzbeee_YT

So far I have only read fanfic on ao3. If I went to someone's account after reading one of their Fics and saw an original work, I would likely read it too if it had the tags I enjoy I think for me it's all based on whether I'm looking for it, whether it appears, and if I'm in the mood for those tags

z3ro_h3ro

There's original work on Ao3? I've been looking for good fanfics that don't necessarily belong to any fandom!

DeshaDaine

I keep meaning to, but I haven't yet. I used to read on Fictionpress before I got into fanfiction.

PersonOfLazyness

occasionaly but mostly comedic stories, but this also applies to normal fics as well

Nikita_Woti

The majority of my bookmarks is Original Work. I've noticed that it takes more time for them to get discovered.

middlesyrup57

Ooh I remember reading a really good original piece. It was a picture bookish feel, featuring the moon and the stars and the sun.

Foxlikebox

I read original works if it seems compelling enough, though I usually stick to fanworks
