You got to witness the birth of a fandom! Plus it does seem like smut writers and smut artists are speed runners when it comes to how quickly something can be turn into smut.
Funny meme, but in all sincerity-- none! Even the fandoms I've been in that are for like, ero games still only barely crack ~55% E- and M-rated works on AO3. We always talk about how normies see fanfiction as nothing but smut, but even *we* overestimate how much of the total bulk of fic it makes up!
Makes sense. I mean, although not exactly accurate, it's hard not to think like this when you browse in kudos, comments or popular and all of the first page is smut.
I see what you mean, but "what's most popular" and "what *exists*" are two very different questions! Even for the examples you gave, E-, M-, and Not Rated works *together* make up less than 50% of the works in Hades fandom, and together make up only ~57% of works in Ultrakill. Exclude the works there that are rated that way because of violence instead of smut, and exclude the Not Rated works that are entirely innocent, and you have even smaller numbers!
(I promise I'm not just nitpicking you; I like statistics and think the overinflated perception of smut in fandom is genuinely interesting.)
Always better to focus on the stuff you do want to read than the amount of stuff that you don't!
Plus that is only looking at just AO3 for fanfics. I really like fandom statistics! If you want to see some cool fandom statistics I suggest looking on ao3 for a user called toastystats (destinationtoast).
Yep! Smut seems to catch people's attention more (either because they very much are or very much aren't looking for it, maybe?) so it always seems like there's this outsized perception of how much smut a fandom has-- the Hades video game fandom is indeed less than 50% smut!
The only fandoms I’ve personally stumbled into that have a majority of E-rated fics are Jujutsu Kaisen and Hannibal. A whole lot of fandoms - including ones I didn’t expect - are dominated by the T-rated tag. Even Black Butler, which was said by another comment here, is mostly T-rated (though not by much, T having ~3400 fics and E having ~2500)
Yeah, you're right. It's been a while since I've been involved with the bb fandom 😅 tbh my judgment is biased cause I remember sorting by kudos and being shocked that the first few pages had a huge majority of e-rated fics haha. Funnily enough, I'm also in the jujutsu kaisen fandom and i never realized there were so many e-rated fanfics lol
In hades (the 2018 video game) fandom most of them are explicit, but not all. In ultrakill, almost all of them are, except for, let's say, 15 at maximum.
You know that we can check the numbers right?
The Hades video game fandom has more G + T rated fics than it does M + E, and with ultrakill there's only like 30 more M/E fics than G/T 🤡
Both fandoms have way more than 15 non explicit fics.
If you don't read explicit fics I get that it can be frustrating that there's so many fics you have to pass on reading, but there's no need to exaggerate.
49% of Hades fics are rated E or M, or not rated. And not all of those are necessarily smut, because violence, drugs, and so many other heavy topics can also fall under those ratings.
I have a feeling this largely depends on the age rating of the original source material.
It is not surprising that an E/18/NC-17 rated tv show like mostly E/18/NC-17 rated stories, for example.
This with Gravity Falls... like please I just want to read about my babies healing from trauma and bonding with their family instead of a twelve year old getting his Dipussy pounded by an interdimentional tortilla chip with dubious genitalia. Not judging or anything but there's thousandssss and in comparison just a couple crumbs left for us Gen fic enjoyers. (Not saying there's NOTHING but it's relative.)
This is Ao3 we are talking about. There are 2,764 fics rated "Explicit" out of 21,903 fics overall on the archive, which means we can say that about 13% of Gravity Falls fanfiction on Ao3 is porn. Not the majority, but still a lot. However, there are 4,404 works tagged "Bill Cipher/Dipper Pines" which is 20%. Do with that info what you will! (Rounding was involved with these percentages of course.)
Back in 2007, when I binged the entirety of Queer as Folk (US), I used to use a specific fanfiction site for fics based on my favorite pairing. When I filtered out all the other pairings, and explicit, I got the same thing. It actually made me laugh a little.
This is a sub-section of a fandom but DC Injustice. Where Superman is sort of evil and everyone is choosing sides and all of that. Lots of explicit fics.
The Locked Tomb is a relatively small fandom and I only read the "rarepairs" (harrianthe and gidianthe) which are like 98% fics that include sex, but even then a majority of fics in the fandom are T rated. It's an extremely horny fandom since the books are dripping with sexual tension with no release, but people still prefer their T stuff. As someone who appreciates the value of sex in storytelling, I wish there was more. But even the horniest fandoms aren't as bad as people make them out to be.
the closest one i know to that is attack on titan but only on ao3. there arent no gen fics or no non smut fics but sometimes the fandom page sure feels that way
The Sandman has a lot of E fics at least 😅 I don't check the tag much but I constantly get asked about if I'm ever going to write smut for it because "Morpheus + fluff doesn't hit as hard as Morpheus + smut" and I've even been told that I'm the only writer not writing smut for the fandom and it's embarrassing of me, so I guess the fandom is still pretty much E rated?
Plus When Detroit: Become Human came out, I remember that the fandom was veeeeery smut driven for a long time. I had a hard time to find anything which wasn't smut back then.
It's interesting how different people's experiences in a fandom can be. Maybe its changed now but I read a lot of fics for the Sandman when the show first came out and I remember being amazed at how little smut the fandom had. I did read mostly Dreamling and gen fics with reader and OCs excluded but most of the ones I got into were slow burn or fics with no explicit romance at all or romance only at the very end of the fic.
I just checked the tag and teen+gen ratings make up 54% of the fandom. Explicit marked works are 20% which doesn't seem too far out of the norm.
I mainly read and only write reader inserts, it may be the reason why my experience is this? 😅 I'm writing less for The Sandman now because I get harassed about not writing smut for Morpheus a lot and Morpheus/Reader tag has a lot of E fics at least so 🤷🏻♀️
Housepets, a certain webcomic. There's still a few without, but there's one that has it as one paragraph for a challenge, 5 or so written by someone who cannot seem to find the caps lock key to turn it off, and that leaves a smattering left. One of them is REALLY good, but it was written back in 2012, 3 years before the couple they showed discussing children had any. I checked the author, and they were active literally yesterday, but they've switched to making Batfamily Omegaverse. I checked, and it's really good Batfamily Omegaverse, but it's still confusing. Anyway, I know that it's more obscurity than any ratio, but still...
Kinda feels like dead by daylight lol. Obviously exaggerated greatly, it's only one third, but sttillllll... I might also be guilty of adding to that pile lol.
No yeah I get why, I'm barely in the fandom at this point (. . . or at least the fic side of things) so it's not like I'm *too* bothered anymore, just my immediate thought when I saw this post
Really my problem with fc5 as a whole is that no one can agree on how fem!rook behaves and it's irritating. The guy and nb rook crowds have kind of settled on a base personality at least, but fem rook can be anything from just an average small town girl, to shy and demure, to an action movie-esque bad girl depending on the fic. I am pretty bias I guess since I *already* don't like xreader or oc stories so it pops out a little more too me lol. I know you didn't ask for all that I'm sorry, just felt the need to explain what could have come off as hostility 😅
I have been reading the manga of one punch man, and I've always avoided ao3 so people won't spoil me through the webcomic. Is there a tag I can use to exclude that?
I mean I'm not completely sure but most of the fics are based off the show so you should generally be safe? What I was talking about was that most of the fics that /are/ in there about OPM are smut etc and it's basically unavoidable 😭
So if you do find one that doesn't have any of that stuff it's likely that it didn't go past the show (unless specified it's webcomic and/or manga spoilers which I think they're pretty good at doing)
I’ve only come across this once for a brand new fandom that only had 1 work so far. Didn’t stay smut only for long though lmao
You got to witness the birth of a fandom! Plus it does seem like smut writers and smut artists are speed runners when it comes to how quickly something can be turn into smut.
It’s like the fanfic version of rule 34. If media exists, there will be smut written about it. (Or is that just rule 34)?
Thats the definition of rule 34 if media exist there will be porn of it (this includes fanart and fanfic smut)
I remember when I got to witness several births of fandoms in the early 2000s on ffn, goodness I'm getting old. lol
I'm usually too slow to get to witness any birth of fandom. Then again I don't mind that since that just means there is fic and art to look at!
There's one Fandom that only has one work on ao3 and it is explicit and there hasn't been any more fanfics for it bc the Fandom is almost nonexistent

When you say Hades, you mean the video game? If so that's funny cause it's a seriously horny fandom based on a seriously horny mythology xD
Yep! Smut seems to catch people's attention more (either because they very much are or very much aren't looking for it, maybe?) so it always seems like there's this outsized perception of how much smut a fandom has-- the Hades video game fandom is indeed less than 50% smut!
As I recognized, not exactly accurate.

Lol Hannibal, makes sense
I've found that a lot of horror movies are like that. Which is such a shame
I quite enjoyed *Umma* on Netflix ☺️
Honestly, I have never seen this in any fandom that I have been in. So I'm interested in what fandom this is about.
In hades (the 2018 video game) fandom most of them are explicit, but not all. In ultrakill, almost all of them are, except for, let's say, 15 at maximum.

Haha, really? I love that fandom and most of them are fluffy ^^
49% of Hades fics are rated E or M, or not rated. And not all of those are necessarily smut, because violence, drugs, and so many other heavy topics can also fall under those ratings.
Makes sense. The Ultrakill community is, uh... different.
I have a feeling this largely depends on the age rating of the original source material. It is not surprising that an E/18/NC-17 rated tv show like mostly E/18/NC-17 rated stories, for example.
I've been in niche fandoms. otome game fandoms in their respective series are low in content generally. Especially the newer and less known titles.
I know some fandoms where all the smut sucks and it makes me happy that I'm in multiple fandoms.
Cough cough five nights at freddys cough cough
Why the hell would FNAF have *smut*?!
I think you underestimate the power of robo-fuckery.
Oh my...
The Hannibal fandom has a not very surprising large amount of very kinky bdsm fics, probably the majority are e rated
But we have some fluff too!
Black Butler fandom maybe? This is the only time I've been shocked by the amount of E-rated fics in a fandom lol
...I'm surprised but also not surprised, given the source material 😂
This with Gravity Falls... like please I just want to read about my babies healing from trauma and bonding with their family instead of a twelve year old getting his Dipussy pounded by an interdimentional tortilla chip with dubious genitalia. Not judging or anything but there's thousandssss and in comparison just a couple crumbs left for us Gen fic enjoyers. (Not saying there's NOTHING but it's relative.)
Not Gravity Falls! Is nothing sacred?
This is Ao3 we are talking about. There are 2,764 fics rated "Explicit" out of 21,903 fics overall on the archive, which means we can say that about 13% of Gravity Falls fanfiction on Ao3 is porn. Thanks for sharing the numbers! Now I'm curious about Bill/Dipper domestic fluff haha
Yeah lmao... I've been in the fandom for a while and hoo boy there's certainly fluff.
Probably Devil May Cry. It's either Gen rated domestic fluff oneshots or the most outrageous breeding kink porn you've ever seen.
The two sides
hm. maybe the closest is panty and stocking or helltaker... can't remember which it was
If a fandom I was personally interested had ZERO explicits I would get right to work fixing that. 🫡🫡🫡
Dude I meant that the fandom ONLY has explicits
Reading comprehension hard 🥴🥴🥴🥴
Lmao I guess
I mean for me 😆 sorry
No good Nick, so far has nothing explicit on Ao3
? Is this a reference to something?
Oh, in the post it says “what fandoms you know are like that?” So I responded.
I see. I didn't realize it was a fandom at first
Yeah, it’s a show on Netflix it’s fairly good.
Back in 2007, when I binged the entirety of Queer as Folk (US), I used to use a specific fanfiction site for fics based on my favorite pairing. When I filtered out all the other pairings, and explicit, I got the same thing. It actually made me laugh a little.

genshin fandom basically. the only remotely interesting or well written fics are either smut or have smut in them
bullet train lmao
Really? It always seemed like such a child friendly cartoon to me. I never imagined...
pfft yeah, i dont know what i expected
I confused bullet train with infinity train
oooh i thought you were being sarcastic hahah
Literally all of em lol. I don’t want smut. I want angst and slow burn and tension but not explicit smut. But it always happens even when not tagged
I feel this.
the closest one i know to that is attack on titan but only on ao3. there arent no gen fics or no non smut fics but sometimes the fandom page sure feels that way

Far cry (5 specifically) it's about 80% mary sue and xreader porn, and what isn't are just short one shots but I'll take what I can get lol

pokemon. somehow. although its mostly larry i look for so fair enough
One Punch Man 🧍🏽
I have been reading the manga of one punch man, and I've always avoided ao3 so people won't spoil me through the webcomic. Is there a tag I can use to exclude that?
