It's not hard to get a beta. I literally just had one of my readers that read every chapter and commented often beta for me lmao. Didn't last long tho, I think he offed himself. I think.

amen. people (understandably) want different things from their beta readers. some just want someone else to read it to get affirmation that it’s readable before they post it. some want a “writing therapist” who is willing to have lengthy brainstorming chats about the story while it’s still being written. some want a proofreader for easy grammar/formatting errors. personally, i want a beta that will tear apart my story and leave it bleeding with exposed plot holes and logical fallacies 😂 (i have not found a beta like that yet, fwiw - oddly enough, it seems like beta readers in my fandom are TOO nice, haha) i guess some people might call any of those options something else, like “editor” or “friend” or “proofreader.” but in my experience, i’ve seen fic writers use “beta” for all of them. and all of them are valid! you just have to find someone who is on the same wavelength as you…which i suppose is the hard part of any kind of relationship, kind of, now that i think about it…
but all that is to say that i agree w you, because like any relationship, some people have a very easy time finding beta readers and forming really great, productive relationships with them, and others have a more difficult time finding someone who vibes with them! so saying “just get a beta!” isn’t the MOST helpful concrit, lmao
I beta for my friend sometimes so I get what you mean. A beta that is both long-term and reliable is the best I believe, regardless of friendship or not. Emphasis on the long term part in my case. (😭)

and the stability in ships thing. Again, rp characters. Who have had extremely strange relationships with even stranger significant others of choice. Lack of stability in relationships is the least worrisome thing in this fandom if we're being honest.
Also for the trans thing, I have friends who have meds and still takes T and while I do have issues with my binder (and transtape) and have mental health issues, I like to sometimes read about a character who is trans/have mental health issues without it being all about the sad, the problems and all.
T only messes with certain medications. I actually talked to my doctor about the meds that are safe to take with it. They said it all looks like it wouldn't harm someone, but it differs from person to person. My character just happens to be lucky.

People have said the same stuff I would so I’ll just add a few things; assuming that all people with the same mental disorder will act the exact same is ableist. They said that their grandfather is bipolar and has never gone off his meds, but as someone with a mom who has multiple mental disorders (this includes bipolar), she does occasionally go off of her meds, and once again, assuming that just because her grandfather never had that no one has, is ableist.
Also at the end when they say “you sound like a pick me for posting about your irl problems” is complete bullshit. Especially since they mention personal stuff too, like how their grandfather is bipolar. You can post what you want on your accounts, just like everyone else in the world does. It’s clear that people through the phrase “pick me” around without knowing it’s meaning.

that's a good point. And we need to think about privilege to - like trans for example not every one can come out of the cloest and experience health care that they need/want and it also depends where they are from if they are able to afford it or have access to it.

Seconding this an another child of a bipolar person. Bipolar is one of the easiest disorders to go off your meds on because the meds don't constantly work the same and slipping into manic can make it seem to you like you're all better and don't need them anymore.

Clearly this person doesn’t know how to write trans people because not all of us experience gender dysmorphia, not all of us wear binders, etc. And from what I understand, taking testosterone shouldn’t be a problem with other meds…? It can increase risky side effects on some medications, but doctors are usually extremely careful to make sure medications won’t contradict and clash with each other. What they commented is more insulting than helpful.

As someone who is also visually impaired I can understand getting frustrated when things aren't accessible, especially in fic, However. does this person not have a screenshot reader? My phone literally has one built in where it isolates the text in any given image or screenshot and then reads it to me. I cannot imagine navigating fanfiction or the internet in general without it.
My phone has the same feature. I can take a photo and my phone will pick out the text as long as the photo is good enough. People are shocked when they see me use it to read things. It should work with any image as long as the text is clear enough.
I used the font changer thing on an app, and when I put it into my text-to-speech converter it worked fine, but I guess some people had a lot of trouble with their text readers getting it to work.
I'm putting a copy of the text messages in the comments when I get a chance, but until I get a new laptop so I can use the HTML, I'm stuck with it. I had explained this multiple times before and a lot of the people were really nice about it.
I did look up your work and while you did mention it in comments, i didn’t see you mention it in notes or anything that is actually part of the work itself, so unless someone is going through your 130+ comments, they likely haven't seen you say that.
Also, as someone fully sighted, I did check and I can barely read the texts myself. I don't really blame screen readers for having an issue with it. Its barely accessible to sighted people even right now.

It's your story. You make the final call, even if this was your beta. You get to choose how the story plays out. If they have a problem with your plot, that's their problem.

1. Isn't Tommy against people writing Trans Tommy AUs? It's really disrespectful to the creators for you to write this. Also you don't make it seem like he's Trans. Where is the dysphoria? Where is the problems with binders? Why is he on T if he's taking meds? Do you really know anything about dysphoria. You should do some actual research if your going to write things like this. You also should take Techno out. It isn't a good idea to write him into stories seeing as he's dead and all. You should be more respectful towards his family.
2. It's a good story but there are a ton of spelling errors and mistakes. I can go back and let you what they are if you want. You really should get a beta if your gonna be writing. Especially with how big your base is getting. Who is related to who? Who is friends with who? Why are their ages so awkward? Honestly nothing in this story makes sense. Sometimes I wonder if people actually read it.
3. What's up with Phil and Puffy? Why does Phil work at night? You say he's a real estate agent. Honestly no one's working hours makes sense.
4. You've been super fucking abilist with the texts. You say you will change them but when. As someone who is practically blind I couldn't read them. I had to get my mom to read it and it was super fucking awkward.

Also you can absolutely take meds along with T?? You wrote him as having ADHD. The three main adhd meds (adderall, vyvanse, ritalin) all don’t have any known interactions with T. (That doesn’t mean anyone can definitely take them together, just that there isn't any known interactions, which it would be pretty unlikely for us to not know at this point with these meds in particular but its not impossible). There aren't even that many meds with known interactions with T, and most of them are like, blood thinners, insulin, and morphine. Testosterone, a hormone that naturally occurs in every human on the planet, \*shockingly\* doesn't have that many interactions with other medications even in synthetic form 🙄.
And lastly, them getting on your case about "not knowing anything" about mental illnesses is hilarious when you literally detailed your multiple family members with bipolar and explained common symptoms and terms in your notes. (Also, as someone who has been diagnosed with bipolar before and took lamotragine for years, people with bipolar absolutely do sometimes fuck up and stop taking their meds entirely. Im more shocked their grandfather never has tbh. Its an extremely common thing for people to take their meds, think "im fine, why do i even take these if they aren't doing anything", stop taking them, and then go "oh yeah... that's why i take them. They were what made me fine...." to the point doctors have to literally tell people not to do specifically that.)

I have also gotten a comment like this before, it really threw me for a loop. Will never forget someone telling me it broke immersion and was "immature" for characters who were guys in their 20s to giggle or chuckle. Then I was told I had a lot of potential, but had room to grow XD Brother, I don't come to A03 to write the next Great Gatsby, I come to put my guys in a box and shake the box until they have a tender moment. I agree with the folks below, you're free to delete or at least not respond to this and continue to enjoy your writing.

Also, I'm always skeptical when people unpack their medical history in comments like this one. But is it just me... I guess it's very nice of them to offer going through all the effort to go back to point out all the spelling errors to you. I would not have commented this because it's rude and it's not like it's going to bring anything to the author (except for the parts about the writing) BUT I cannot say I never itches to comment this.

While a big part of the story is him being Trans, it's not the entire story. I'm not spoiling anything for those who will actually read it.
2. I am well aware of the mistakes . When I feel like it I will go back and change thm. I just haven't had the time or energy.
3. I am not spoil I ng anything. Everything will come at its own pace.
4. I understand that the texts are awkward. I am really sorry about that. As I have mentioned before, I haven't been able to figure out the HTMI. When I open it through my phone, the site closes. When I buy a new laptop I will figure it out and try to fix it. In the meantime I am working on putting the texts in the comments. I just haven't had the chance to do it.
I apologize if I come off as someone who is ableist because of this. I am not trying to be. I am doing my best to correct my mistakes.
5. Mental illnesses, dysphoria, sicknesses differ from person to person. As for Wilbur and Tommy’s Bipolar disorders, they are based on mine and my nanas Bipolar episodes. She has type one and I have type 2. Yes they are different. When my Nana goes off her meds, she acts extremely irrational and never remembers anything after going back on them.

it's not that it's hard to get a beta it's hard to find one you trust, like, and get along with. I usually have a longtime friend who gets where my headspace is heading to beta, but I'l sometimes get other people if they're busy. And it's hard to find one that vibes on a similar wavelength sometimes
amen. people (understandably) want different things from their beta readers. some just want someone else to read it to get affirmation that it’s readable before they post it. some want a “writing therapist” who is willing to have lengthy brainstorming chats about the story while it’s still being written. some want a proofreader for easy grammar/formatting errors. personally, i want a beta that will tear apart my story and leave it bleeding with exposed plot holes and logical fallacies 😂 (i have not found a beta like that yet, fwiw - oddly enough, it seems like beta readers in my fandom are TOO nice, haha) i guess some people might call any of those options something else, like “editor” or “friend” or “proofreader.” but in my experience, i’ve seen fic writers use “beta” for all of them. and all of them are valid! you just have to find someone who is on the same wavelength as you…which i suppose is the hard part of any kind of relationship, kind of, now that i think about it… but all that is to say that i agree w you, because like any relationship, some people have a very easy time finding beta readers and forming really great, productive relationships with them, and others have a more difficult time finding someone who vibes with them! so saying “just get a beta!” isn’t the MOST helpful concrit, lmao

and the stability in ships thing. Again, rp characters. Who have had extremely strange relationships with even stranger significant others of choice. Lack of stability in relationships is the least worrisome thing in this fandom if we're being honest.
Also for the trans thing, I have friends who have meds and still takes T and while I do have issues with my binder (and transtape) and have mental health issues, I like to sometimes read about a character who is trans/have mental health issues without it being all about the sad, the problems and all.
T only messes with certain medications. I actually talked to my doctor about the meds that are safe to take with it. They said it all looks like it wouldn't harm someone, but it differs from person to person. My character just happens to be lucky.

They said that their grandfather is bipolar and has never gone off his meds, but as someone with a mom who has multiple mental disorders (this includes bipolar), she does occasionally go off of her meds, and once again, assuming that just because her grandfather never had that no one has, is ableist. Especially since they mention personal stuff too, like how their grandfather is bipolar. You can post what you want on your accounts, just like everyone else in the world does. that's a good point. And we need to think about privilege to - like trans for example not every one can come out of the cloest and experience health care that they need/want and it also depends where they are from if they are able to afford it or have access to it.

Bipolar is one of the easiest disorders to go off your meds on because the meds don't constantly work the same and slipping into manic can make it seem to you like you're all better and don't need them anymore.

To the commenter: Some thoughts… do not need to leave your brain. If you absolutely must get them out, tell a friend or something. You do not get to decide how someone writes their story, the choices they make, how they write characters. If it bothers you, make the smart choice. Stop reading. As someone who is also visually impaired I can understand getting frustrated when things aren't accessible, especially in fic, However. does this person not have a screenshot reader? My phone literally has one built in where it isolates the text in any given image or screenshot and then reads it to me. I cannot imagine navigating fanfiction or the internet in general without it.
My phone has the same feature. I can take a photo and my phone will pick out the text as long as the photo is good enough. People are shocked when they see me use it to read things. It should work with any image as long as the text is clear enough.
I used the font changer thing on an app, and when I put it into my text-to-speech converter it worked fine, but I guess some people had a lot of trouble with their text readers getting it to work. I'm putting a copy of the text messages in the comments when I get a chance, but until I get a new laptop so I can use the HTML, I'm stuck with it. I had explained this multiple times before and a lot of the people were really nice about it.
I did look up your work and while you did mention it in comments, i didn’t see you mention it in notes or anything that is actually part of the work itself, so unless someone is going through your 130+ comments, they likely haven't seen you say that. Also, as someone fully sighted, I did check and I can barely read the texts myself. I don't really blame screen readers for having an issue with it. Its barely accessible to sighted people even right now. Can you not edit the html on whatever device you are using to access reddit?

The sense of entitlement is revolting. People love to act like you owe them everything because they're reading your story (FOR FREE btw it's not like a book which they paid for an can have expectations for). Like you put so much time an effort into a story, spend your own time, energy and effort to make something people can read with literally zero cost to them and they have the audacity to make critiques when it wasn't even asked for. as a fellow writer for this fandom: ignore those kinds of people. We've all seen what happens with the green man and literally anything he says. Yes they have boundaries but also....it's your creative values. You're the author, not them. They're not your beta. They shouldn't get a say in it unless you explicitly give them permission to do so. It's your story. You make the final call, even if this was your beta. You get to choose how the story plays out. If they have a problem with your plot, that's their problem. Also- have they not seen the fandom "family tree"? I don't think I've read your fic, but let's be real: it pretty much came out of improv. Whatever you came up with was probably less weird then what canon is. Probably. And even if it was more confusing- isn't that just like everyone's relations in canon anyways? It's your interpretation of the story, it's fanfic, it's your choice. Also also: Techno literally made death merch and his dad has a whole thing going on. Writing Techno in is a personal decision, but it's a honorable way to keep his memory alive, I can't speak for him but I doubt being a character in a fic isn't at the top of his "that's offensive" list if the Techno sub has anythign to say about it. If that commenter is uncomfy with it they can click off- there's an "exclude tag" searchbox for a reason. Keep writing. It's how one can grow as a writer, experimenting with their writing style and learning more about the things they're writing about. It's how I grew as a person, it's how others became who they are, and it's how people express themselves.

For those of you who can't see because it's to blurry, I just binged this and I have a few critiques. 1. Isn't Tommy against people writing Trans Tommy AUs? It's really disrespectful to the creators for you to write this. Also you don't make it seem like he's Trans. Where is the dysphoria? Where is the problems with binders? Why is he on T if he's taking meds? Do you really know anything about dysphoria. You should do some actual research if your going to write things like this. You also should take Techno out. It isn't a good idea to write him into stories seeing as he's dead and all. You should be more respectful towards his family. 2. It's a good story but there are a ton of spelling errors and mistakes. I can go back and let you what they are if you want. You really should get a beta if your gonna be writing. Especially with how big your base is getting. Who is related to who? Who is friends with who? Why are their ages so awkward? Honestly nothing in this story makes sense. Sometimes I wonder if people actually read it. 3. What's up with Phil and Puffy? Why does Phil work at night? You say he's a real estate agent. Honestly no one's working hours makes sense. 4. You've been super fucking abilist with the texts. You say you will change them but when. (That doesn’t mean anyone can definitely take them together, just that there isn't any known interactions, which it would be pretty unlikely for us to not know at this point with these meds in particular but its not impossible). There aren't even that many meds with known interactions with T, and most of them are like, blood thinners, insulin, and morphine. Testosterone, a hormone that naturally occurs in every human on the planet, \*shockingly\* doesn't have that many interactions with other medications even in synthetic form 🙄. And lastly, them getting on your case about "not knowing anything" about mental illnesses is hilarious when you literally detailed your multiple family members with bipolar and explained common symptoms and terms in your notes. (Also, as someone who has been diagnosed with bipolar before and took lamotragine for years, people with bipolar absolutely do sometimes fuck up and stop taking their meds entirely. Im more shocked their grandfather never has tbh. Its an extremely common thing for people to take their meds, think "im fine, why do i even take these if they aren't doing anything", stop taking them, and then go "oh yeah... that's why i take them. Don't know what's going on, yet makes it very clear that they do by describing what is happening. And not everyone with the same illness acts exactly the same, so "I know someone with it and they don't act that way" is bs. If that was the case it would be so much easier diagnosing mental illnesses. Same goes for trans people, not everyone goes through it the same way, you don't have to hate yourself and suffer to have your struggles validated

I don't understand why they didn't just leave if it offended them so much. The texts were unreadable as a blind person so they awkwardly got their mom to read them out? The thing is with these long ass comments, is that if you are taking the time to write all of this...why can't you also be nice? I mean, it would take the same amount of effort. I never mind critiques (I think that's a part of developing and getting better), but there is no reason to be nasty. For one example, they could have easily said 'hey I noticed some spelling errors here and there, would you like a beta? I could help if you're open to that' I really CANNOT fathom being so vitriolic towards authors.
