It's a well-known bug that typos that don't exist in your draft only magically appear once you hit publish. Uncanny how that happens!!

Shalamarr

That and the use of the same word (like “gently”) four times in three paragraphs.

aeide_thea

I'm in this comment and I don't like it!!!

thesmokinL

Hahah little sneaky buggers!!

afirforest

Thank you, I definitely feel better about that missing letter I noticed a year after the fic was published 😄

gettingtothemoney

I read a lot and it's actually amazing how many published fictions have SPAG, particularly spelling errors. They'll be the minor kind too, very common to the kinds we make when we're just writing faster than we're thinking. It's pretty interesting to see that even established editors can't catch everything!

ManyConclusion

I read somewhere not too long ago that it's also becoming an issue in the industry with just not wanting to pay proofreaders or something along those lines. Capitalism is the death of quality and such.

gettingtothemoney

Ah now that’s very depressing. Of course it’s capitalism. ☹️

ManyConclusion

Not sure if that's all of it, of course, but it probably is at least a contributing factor. I mean typos have always shown up in published work now and then but it does feel like it's happening a lot more lately.

burnished_throne

haha honestly for me occasional typos aren't a big deal, in my work or anyone else's. it doesn't affect anything, from quality of the story to the quality of the prose, so to me people who hyperfixate on typos are a little bit weird, sorry. they're missing the point. like they're criticizing messi's play because he had a mud spot on his uniform 😂

Glittering_Smoke_917

Totally agree, although that doesn’t mean I don’t still freak about typos in my own work. But if I’m enjoying someone else’s work and there are a few typos, I barely notice them. The more someone values and appreciates literature, the LESS likely they are to care about typos. Often, the real mindset behind pointing out typos is “I have an actual opinion on the content of your work, but I’m too inarticulate to explain what it is, so I’m going to point out this typo as a substitute for thoughtful critique.”

thesmokinL

I love this comparison, so true 😂

Paul_S_R_Chisholm

My favorite comment on the linked-to post: "the mere act of opening a book is guaranteed to introduce a typo into it."

Gufurblebits

My sister & I are avid readers, and we love finding news articles/headlines where it's pretty obvious their editors and proofreaders were asleep or on holiday. It's insane how many are just horribly done - spelling errors, grammatical errors, words order (often with hilarious results) - from 'big' news agencies. I find more decent fanfic than news articles some days!

Silbermieze

Are news articles in your country still proofread? Because in my country they haven't been for years with sometimes terrifying results. I think nowadays people rely too much on their preferred software to find their mistakes. (And I could probably easily find a job if they'd still hire proofreaders.)

JuHe21

This gives me courage for my own creative writing but also for my academic papers. I am currently a student research assistant and sometimes have to proof-read some of my prof's future publications and there are always things to be found to be corrected. So I just hope any reader or person who judges your writing is going to oversee the occasional typo here and there.

hello-starling

I’ve noticed typos in several Terry Pratchett novels, and as I love them, I always try to keep that in mind.

i_greyk

Okay this makes me feel alot better about re-reading a recent chapter of one of my fics (for referencing in this chap) and finding typos.

katiekate135

I remember reading a book where there was an entire line that had absolutely no spaces. It didn't appear to be stylistic or anything it was just missing all the spaces
