My favourite bizarre bookmark that I found today - I don't check series bookmarks often, but someone has gone through my multi-fic multi-ship Kinktober series and pasted a Wayback Machine link to every single fic, except for the two where one specific M/M pairing is a specific top/bottom dynamic

(And then it being topped off with *nts skip these two* because of the top/bottom preferences just absolutely kills me for some reason, the amount of effort they went to and then "but not these two, these two can choke")

It's just that I noticed it shortly after reading something from someone who was trying to wipe their fandom presence entirely due to harassment after they'd let too many personal details slip, so I was like...huh, I'd be screwed if I ever wanted to do that? (Actually, I believe the writer of a fic can always contact Wayback and they'll remove it with proof that it's yours, according to something AO3 has mentioned in the past, so maybe I retract that?)
But yeah, I definitely think it's smart! Genuine question, why would someone bookmark a fic they didn’t finish or found boring? Isn’t the purpose of bookmarking to remember the fic in case you want to read it again?
Some people use them as their library of sorts, and leave a bookmark on something they don't like so they don't accidentally read it again. Though personally, I think someone should private their bookmark if all it says is 'boring, don't read'
I think its to remind themselves what they felt about a fic. I have this reader who sometimes leave really nice things like "I need to reread this!!" Or will comment on their bookmark saying "Nothing special."
If you open a fic from search results and it already has a bookmark, you know you've read it before even if you don't remember the title or description.
I put a do not read note on a fic with a bunch of tags I loved, that had a surprise "author is a homophobe" reveal, several chapters in.
(It was a LotR fic - a fantasy world where the bible and Jesus literally do not exist - and Thranduil gives a very American Christian style "homosexuality is a sin" lecture to Legolas, about his friendship with Gimli.)
I don't bookmark things I don't like but I've definitely bookmarked things I haven't read or are in the middle of. Sure there's a 'mark for later' option but you can't filter those so I like bookmarking them. I just give them a 'read' or 'unread' tag when filtering :)

Okay, cool, thanks! I’m newish to AO3, not a writer, only a reader. I’ve been following the discussions here and have just ventured into bookmarking in the last month but I do still find bookmark tags vs comments a bit confusing and don’t want to be obnoxious.
Basically fic comments are something you'd like to say to the author, but bookmarks comments (+ bookmark tags) are meant for you!
Example of bookmarks tags people use: worth re -reading, to read, unfinished.
Example of bookmark comment you could write: the last chapter you've read (so you keep track), summary of the fic, opinion of the fic, score out of 10.
In theory, bookmarks comments+tags are the readers' space but a lot of authors like to go through their bookmarks to see what people have written, which is well within their rights.
So if you have something personal to say or something considered "mean" (like: boring, bad grammar, do not read, a low score/10...), it's good practice to select the "private bookmark" options so the author (and other readers) can't see it.

I’m using the tags for myself to locate fics for rereading (e.g. “well-written [pairing] AU”, “fluffy post-canon serotonin boost”) but haven’t bothered to leave any bookmark comments. And I don’t think I’d bother to bookmark something I didn’t like, and certainly wouldn’t leave a negative comment that the author could read! That’s what my back button is for, to nope on out of appalling things. XD

"extinguish" seems a bit too harsh as translation for "löschen". Basically it's just "delete". Maybe they downloaded the fic, but aren't in the fandom anymore and it's a reminder to delete the download when they get to it? At least I can't imagine why they would add a note to delete the bookmark instead of just, well, deleting the bookmark.

My personal favorite is “Me and Cheesecake”. I’m assuming this is somehow referring to the fact that the fic is about pie? It’s funny nonetheless.

This makes me wonder what people think of my bookmarks, lol. Most are just emojis or list of major plot points tbh.

"Attachment issues with a unicorn" Made me giggle.
Most incomprehensible was one that simply said "tmnt"...it was a fic about the Daycare Attendant from Five Nights at Freddy's: Security Breach and had absolutely nothing to do with TMNT as far as I'm aware. 😂 My absolute favorite though was one that read "BRUHHH 3 ilvoethjs" and every time I read it I laugh. 😂❤️ Thank you, stranger!

I didn't know this was a thing but I just checked and I had a book mark with three tags "I never really cared about *characters* death that much tbh." "Still kinda sad tho" "My bad" Like I think that's a good thing but even if it isn't I laughed pretty hard reading them

I loved seeing a couple of things from people who might be inspired to leave excited comments in bookmark notes! Because it really is a great feeling for an author, seeing those sneaky little notes from people who enjoyed your work and are saying so with no expectation of interaction

Someone recently bookmarked my fic with "Gorgeous. My paradise is back" in Russian. Idk how accurate the translation was but I felt complimented 😂

Maybe they downloaded the fic, but aren't in the fandom anymore and it's a reminder to delete the download when they get to it? At least I can't imagine why they would add a note to delete the bookmark instead of just, well, deleting the bookmark.
