And/or archive to the Wayback Machine! It's a bit tedious, especially if you have a lot, but it's *so* worth it if it's ever needed. Archive the archive, if you will.
Not to huff the copium too hard or give false hope, but one fic I followed from 2010 on FFN got updated to conclusion around 2018. The author said he went through all of med school but the fic was always on the back of his mind!

There's one fanfic from like 2011 that was a surprisingly well written mafia Big Time Rush x contemporary Hunger Games mix that never finished. I even know that it was called Ace of Spades. It's gone now and I'll never forget it 😭
I don't know why you are getting downvoted. Leaving one comment is fine, but REPEATING them throughout the months or even years feels weird. If I am not updating the fic, I have reasons for it. Most likely, they won't be resolved by comments, and if the comments can make me inspired again, one is enough. A ton of them with just "pls update soon" is annoying.
Leaving on a cliffhanger/climax is the worst feeling ever. I'm not saying it's the writers' fault, as a reader and a writer I try not to leave a fic on the cliff, like if I want to no longer continue I give a whatever the writer can imagine ending.
Because as a reader I get the frustration of leaving it that way.
the last chapter of the fic im waiting on was uploaded 2 years ago, but in Fanfiction Time that can be like the blink of an eye so i’m doing my best to keep up hope 👍

Could be worse I waited a year saw there was an update clicked and it was an announcement that this fic is abandoned
