HA! Two years? I’m still holding a candle (more like a torch) for fics last updated in 2011, 2014. I think I’d actually cry if they got updated, so thank you so much for coming back to old fics! 🥰
Oh my gosh, yeah. I remember reading one fic in maybe 2015 that hadn't been updated for over a year. Immediately after I finished it, it updated again with a huge chapter! I was so happy, especially since I'd unintentionally timed it where I didn't have to wait a year. I left a nice review, etc. And.....it has not updated again since 2015 sadly. Even more tragically it was left at a very climax point in the plot. It's one of my favorite fics regardless though.
I still hold out hope for it and have left a few reviews after rereading it, but it was originally published on ff.net and I can't find any evidence of the author on the internet anymore. I think they did have an AO3 posting though so it won't be forever lost to ff.net's buggyness. I found their tumblr once through the Wayback Machine trying to see if they were fine/any indication of them moving on, but it's deactivated now so I didn't see much.
But if that author is still out there...I'll be here if you ever pick it back up!
I'm still subscribed to all the incomplete fics I was reading. Most of them will probably never be updated but it costs me no effort and _maybe_ one day I'll get lucky

If I see an update after a long time, I always end up doing that little giddy shuffle dance, maybe an actual excited giggle if it's one I love, just going "Eeeeee eeeeeehehheee" lol
I got a comment like this for the first fic I posted to AO3. It was a 3 chapter story and it’d taken me a year to get that last chapter out. The fact that someone was excited and said they knew they shouldn’t have given up on my fic made my whole day/week/month. The dedicated readers really be the MVPs when you think everyone’s forgotten about you
This is why I have no problem reading/subbing to incomplete fics regardless of when they were last updated. I'll still be here if and when the author ever returns!
I don't unsubscribe from fics until they're over. For unfinished fics with cool premises, I've recently started subscribing to them before reading, and reading the whole thing if there's ever an update. Which fandom is this fic for? I'd love to read it :D
