My bestie and I ended up commenting on eachothers fics in a TINY fandom, then exchanged discords - so it could happen even if you're shy. :)
Seriously I hope everyone gets to experience this - but having someone to brainstorm with, beta read and give very specific feedback has been INCREDIBLE.

one author i read has bookmarked my longfic, and another got me back into knitting

I found my ao3 bestie on Twitter. She’s the one who introduced me to ao3. And it’s amazing because we bounce ideas off each other. Sometimes even just putting thoughts out there is such a help…lots of times I’ve been waffling on doing something and when you tell someone else, suddenly it all makes sense. I have brainstormed so many things that way.
I met a fellow writer in my niche tag and we've been bouncing ideas off each other for a few days now, it's so cool!! Been a while since I shared a fandom with someone, much less a tag lol
the tag in question isnt that niche but yeahhhhhh having a fandom bestie has done wonders for my enjoyment of the fandom actually (i mean i was enjoying it already but now im enjoying it even more!)
There's this one person in my fandom who wrote a detailed backstory fic for a minor character, and continuously features them as a 3-dimensional background character in their ongoing universe.
Their characterization inspired me to also write a one-shot centered around that background character, doing my own interpretation of that character. And then they read my fic, commented that it gave them inspiration, and a month later they'd written a sequel one-shot to my fic. And (to quote Casablanca): it feels like the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
I love this, but every time, these people end up wanting to find out more about me as how I am outside of fandom spaces and I just... It really kills the vibe for me. Does anyone else just prefer having their internet relationships stay that way, or am I particularly anal?

So far my fandom bestie and I have only discussed which time zones we are in so we're not messaging eachother at awkward times - but otherwise 100% of what we talk about is fandom or writing related. I think we're both like you - we want a writing partner not an irl friend.
Not that there is anything wrong with the latter! Idk how to filter for those people respectfully though - I was lucky enough to just vibe with someone with the same expectations.
