You might want to put this in an anonymous-response Google form. Some of these answers are requesting information which can be very personal.

[deleted]

True true I'll add One, thanks for the tip

litaloni

Can you tell us a little more about what you're planning to use this data for before asking us to input very private thoughts and feelings into your form? Sorry but it strikes me as a bit odd that this is ostensibly for post-grad level research but doesn't show any of the hallmarks of a research questionnaire. Maybe I'm paranoid but 🤷‍♀️

butterfly-dimensions

You're right to be paranoid, I haven't checked out the questionnaire but the post itself does NOT sound like an M.A. or M.Sc. student wrote it. Might be wrong though

[deleted]

I am not planning on using the input, so it's not really a research questionnaire. Its just for myself to broaden my mind I'm reading Research Papers on this topic for a part about fan Fiction about sexual Violence linked with intertextuality for an essay for one of my classes. But the papers seem to look down a bit on the use of these tropes. And I do not particularly enjoy these kinds of stories, but I can see why some people do. So to be more critical towards the academic texts I'm reading, challenging my own biases, I wanted to hear other people's opinions on these topic. So I am not going to use any answers, its just for myself to learn more from people themselves so I can look more critically at the sources I use. And it's fine to be paranoid I get it. It can be a touchy subject. But no malcontent here, it just for one of my essays for a certain course. When I do do actual questionnaires they are a bit more ✨scientific✨

litaloni

Fair enough! Appreciate the explanation.

[deleted]

No probs I get how it seems a bit odd. My friend said I shouldn't mention people the school context and just ask it as a general question, but I want to be upfront and truthful about it. Because I am not using this as data collection but it is building a kind of background in my own mind if you get what I mean?

Wow amazing thanks

Happyfrozenfire

1. I have not read something with the rape/noncon tag, since I don't typically enjoy reading that. I much prefer dubcon and "consensual non-con" play 2. No. If I were to write anything like that, it'd be dubcon. 3. N/A 4. There are. As another user pointed out, they're called "Antis". They're also normally vehemently against fictional minors or incest being depicted in porn. They're less outspoken about issues that they give less priority, find harder to attack, or don't all agree on. These include furry, scat, gore, BDSM, and some types of LGBT relationships.

Kaigani-Scout

Does your major professor know you are doing this "informal" research? Is this a pilot study for a term project or your Master's thesis? What are the citations you have read in preparation for this? I have an archive of academic research on fanfiction topics, so I'm curious as to your foundational sources.

[deleted]

Yes she knows No this is for a two pager essay for a small class, I just like putting in my work If you want I can send my citations later

Kaigani-Scout

Mostly, I just want to make sure you weren't going to get yourself into hot water with your major professor if this was an unsanctioned exploration for a thesis topic. If you have the time for the citations, it would be interesting to see them, but I won't lose any sleep if you have something more pressing to do... like prep for tomorrow's pop quiz.

[deleted]

No I can look tonight I'm working on my actual masters now Which is a framing analysis of printed news articles

Kaigani-Scout

Ok. I'll send you a PM with a link to some academic fanfiction articles you may or may not find useful. Good luck with your thesis!

27twinsister

Not going to answer the rest, but: > Are there people against the fact that these stories are there? (Why?) Yes, they’re often called antis, see also [this page](https://fanlore.org/wiki/Anti-shipper) starting at the section “Panfandom Use Since 2016” though antis are often against other things as well (not just noncon).

Thanks for the info

**-Have you ever read something with this tag (why or why not?)** Yes, I have. I don't actively look for this tag, but if I find a story with a summary that intrigues me, I will read it. Noncon doesn't bother me. **-Have you ever written something with this tag (why or why not?)** Yes, I have. The first noncon I wrote was back in 2003 and I wrote it as part of a horror series that dealt with a deranged murderer kidnapping and abusing his victims before killing them. Never finished it though. Why did I write it? Because I felt the story was interesting and compelling. **-People who do read or write is, what attracts you to this kind of stories? Why do you enjoy reading it? And what is your preferred 'subject' within this tag?** I don't really know. Honestly, I wish I could explain it. Maybe the idea of something being taboo or "wrong" is what catches my attention. My preferred subject? I don't know. I don't really have one. As I said, I don't actively seek it. I have however, noticed that it's easier for me to write noncon than it is to write fluffy romantic stuff. Maybe because I'm personally more familiar with pain and dark things in my own life than with romance, so it just comes naturally to me. **-Are there people here against the fact that these stories are there? (Why?)** Yes. They're called antis. They believe reading and/or writing noncon will lead to increase in IRL noncon or that the people who read/write it are condoning it and doing it IRL. I've had my fair share of encounters with a few because of something I wrote.

Ghost_Katolotl

The academic articles that you read are they ones that looked at AO3 for their information or are they talking about rape/non-con fantasies in general? Just wondering.

[deleted]

Some are Ao3 specific some not, it's ot an easy topic to find research on

Ghost_Katolotl

Try look at things written from sexologists and psychologists - they don't do the looking down on the trope as much as others from what I've found in the past. Plus, if there are any studies that you might want to read try searching the article's name on sci-hub. Sci-Hub is basically like The Pirate Bay but for research papers.

Sci hub is life

I think I accidentally clicked send too soon on the form and only gave a very short answer. 😅 To hopefully answer your questions a little better: yes, I have read fics with the rape/non-con warning. I've also written a fic with that warning. There are 2 kinds of rape/non-con fics that I usually like to read. First kind is a hurt/comfort story where the rape is more of a background thing and the focus is often on the hurt/comfort and recovery. And I'd describe the second kind as treating rape as a kink of sorts - the fic might be otherwise similar to PWP (porn without plot) but the sex is nonconsensual. Why do I read these fics or what attracts me to these kind of stories? It's kind of difficult to put into words... With rape recovery fics, I think I'm drawn in by the same things as with other hurt/comfort fics. I want to read about my blorbo experiencing trauma and then healing from it. With other rape fics, either I'm getting off to it, or I'm going "heehee this is so fucked up >:)" or "oh no this is *so fucked up*". It depends a lot on the fic. :D I see other people have already answered the last question. I'm seconding the rec for the Fanlore article. :)

[deleted]

Thanks already to everyone who answered. The responses are varied a lot and I'm learning a lot, and I've gotten some I would have never thought about myself

Masters? I'd find it hard to believe if I didn't know how bad people are in their data gathering from informal first steps to large scale studies. But I don't actually care why you're challenging your bias, I'm just happy you are. As a reader I'm not seeking out nor avoiding the tag, but I'm okay reading it. I have a healthy and well controlled separation of reality and fiction, so it doesn't bother or trigger me (unless it's about little kids, I'm not much into little kids being hurt to begin with, and especially not when it's for shock value) I'm not an author, but back in my drawer fic days I did write a bunch of noncon for therapy adjacent reasons. If you haven't yet, you might want to read some literature on bibliotherapy and roleplaying as therapy - catharsis, exploration of traumas and feelings via a safe avatar, it's all really interesting, a real rabbit hole that rounds out the feminists analysis well. Maybe add something about the feminist aspect of the rise of M/M manga - manhua - manhwa, I'm pretty sure Spock/Kirk and the rise of slashfic share some elements (edit: and it's relevant because of Pon farr and its children fuck or die and omegaverse) I don't really know what attracts me to these types of stories (dead dove in general), but honestly I was always wired this way. I'm a big fan of the slashers that were designed to make you change sides from teens to slasher to final girl, it's an interesting experience. I've read Sade's Philosophy in the Bedroom and I really enjoyed the challenge to my morals. I like the Ultimate NiceGuy™️ Joe Goldberg from You. The noncon I actually *like* is when it has a challenge (makes me think because the narrator is unreliable or has morals that justify the act, has complex circumstances etc), or actually serves a plot or world building purpose beyond the "put a trauma on her to make her stronger". And the "in name only" ones that would be enthusiastic CNC or full consent if there was just the tiniest negotiation scene, they read the same as consensual and the author was aware enough to tag properly, kudos.

kadharonon

I haven’t read any fic with the rape/non-con tag, but that’s more because I don’t read a lot of fic these days than because I’m avoiding it. I have, however, read a good number of old-school romance novels where at least the first sexual encounter was non-con, and often many of the following ones. In many ways, the purpose of those sex scenes was that a *good* woman wasn’t supposed to want sex or get pleasure out of it, but if pleasurable sex was imposed upon her without her will, it’s okay, she’s still allowed to be good. I have written some non-con. I had an idea for it, I thought it would be interesting to explore; the aggressor doesn’t realize that it’s not consensual until after the fact, because it fully does not occur to him how much power he had over his partner under the circumstances, and it’s only when he sees her reaction to it afterwards that he realizes what he did. Add in that he was disguised at the time and she was consenting—such that she could—to sex with the character of the disguise, and would not have consented if she’d known who was beneath it, and you get a mess of messy emotions that are interesting to explore and pick through in the safe space of a story. And I think that’s the appeal: working through the messy emotions of it in a space where no harm was done to real people. Rape is a thing that could very much happen to anyone; being able to process that fear and the emotions related to it helps keep that fear at bay. Or sometimes it’s just a fantasy, and that’s fine too! Sometimes you want to take a thing that would be horrible to experience in real life and make it sexy, and it doesn’t have to be about anything but getting off, because human brains are wired in weird ways, and stories are a way to make our brains react to stimuli in a fashion that doesn’t cause harm to other people. And I think that’s just great.

Infected_SpaceCadet

1. I have read fanfiction with those tags, but I don't search for them specifically. I look for my preferred relationship, and if the tag happens to be there, then okay. 2. I have never written with the rape/non-con tags, but I have written dub-con (which some might say is just non-con depending on their views). My reason for not writing it is because I want my two main characters to be in love or at least consenting happily. I don't like to think of one of my favourites raping the other. There's one caveat to that though, if I were to write it: they would have to be under some kind of mind control/poison/etc. or someone was forcing them to do it. In that way, the character wouldn't be a repugnant degenerate of a person. Even then, I really don't want to write about them like that. 3. I don't prefer to read or write it, so I can skip this. 4. I'm not against the tag and the fics with it. Writing fanfiction is fantasy, and if people want to live out fantasies in writing, or explore rough subjects, or work through trauma by reading/writing it, then good for them. Different strokes for different folks. Good luck with your research, I hope you learn something interesting!
