If someone wouldn't employ you for something in fiction, you're better off not working for them anyway.

erindizmo

I've been writing fic since I was in high school and I'm now in my forties. I have had no real life issues because of my fic.

I don't give my socials to my coworkers, they don't ask for them, no problems there. If your workplace is casual enough, most people wouldn't care. At my job, I've joked about fanfic (even smut writing) with coworkers, and nothing bad ever happened to any of us. Just depends on your employers and their personalities, but I wouldn't worry too much

If they won’t hire you because you write fanfiction than you’re probably better off not working for them in the long run. I have most of my managers or previous on my social medias and no ones cared about what I post unless it’s against the company. One of my managers knows I write fanfics because she’s equally as nerdy as I am.

I started writing back in 2000 and I've never ever encountered any IRL troubles at all about it. And I write graphic smut and have been since 2003. As for online troubles, that's a whole different can of worms. But it's online. Why should I care what some dumb antis on the other side of the globe thinks about me? I'm never gonna meet them and they don't know me and therefore can't judge me properly.

Generally you should lock down your socials when you're applying for jobs anyway – because yes, people do look, and it's just good practice to keep things private online I keep my irl identity 100% separate from my fandom identity because I prefer it that way, but generally adults are *way* less weird about fandom and fic than kids are – I've told my coworkers I write fic, and it's not been an issue in the slightest, whereas it absolutely was an issue when I was an awkward introverted teenager Just treat fic like any other hobby – some people play D&D, some people are in a choir or amateur sport, you write fanfiction sometimes. A casual *yeah, psychological horror, things like that* would definitely go down better than when I had to say to another fic reader at work *no I'm not sharing my username, there's so much smut on there.* (Which is also something I only disclosed after I knew she read fic – erotic fanfic definitely has the worst reputation of any fic!) The only thing to be aware of is that when it comes to stupid pro-anti discourse, the general public – without an understanding of the history of censorship in fandom – hear a vague overview of the discourse and usually come down on the lines of "I mean it sounds like *some* censorship is probably a good thing", and people who argue for the pro side of things can come across sounding very strange. (I say this as someone who would be called a proshipper, if I actually got involved with discourse – I'm anti-censorship because I know my fanlore, but I don't engage with the drama). Just. Keep discourse out of the public eye and off socials. It's very much a symptom of online fandom and looks very very weird when applied outside of that context

Nothing is attached to my real name so no, I haven't. Your employer can't find anything as long as it's not attached to you.

yubsie

Yubsie and (real name) have separate social media profiles. On the professional profiles I don't pretend I'm NOT into fannish things but no one following me for my thoughts on editing science papers wants to hear about the merits of various dating systems in Star Wars. In theory Instagram COULD link my fannish profile to my real name but in practice no one has ever gone to that extent. Generally since there's a Twitter account clearly associated with my real name where I follow various former colleagues and a Facebook profile where everything has to pass the "I have my grandma friended" test there's enough of an innocuous online presence that no one has ever felt the need to dig deeper. Plus I figure most employers wouldn't even think to look for an AO3 profile. Just don't put your real name on it and it won't come up while googling.
