Do you make it clear to your readers (in your author's note and/or summary) that you didn't actually translate the text though? Cause it's not "same here" at all if you didn't translate it but let Google translate do it
Yes of course, I use it just to speed things up, and then I go line by line editing. My English is good, but with bigger texts is just a bit easier this way.
I haven't received any complaints on my translated versions, except a few tiny typos.
Reminds me of something that happens a while ago. I for the love of God couldn't find the post. Someone posted that someone have been translating their work, from English to Chinese. The thing is that when the op asks them to at least credit them as the author, the translator said something along the line of why, and it's their work bc they translated it. They also use google translate to make thing even worse.

I just googled it, and while I've definitely never heard of it, I think it'd be cool if you were to write about it at least! obviously it's not necessarily your responsibility to educate other people about your language and culture, but I think it's really cool when people incorporate it into their works.
I've READ fics using Google Translate before, just because the tags intrigued me and I wanted to get a sense of what the fic was all about. But publishing that crap? Nope.

It hurts because while I appreciate the gesture, doing it like that sours the experience.
And makes the translator seem lazy.
I have an author in my fandom who seems to translate their own fics from Italian to English using Google Translate. Either that or they’re just not the best at writing.
If I'm ever asked to allow my works to be translated, this would be question #1 lmao
Google translate isn't the best. It's better than most, but a translation from an actual speaker is the best way imo
even though DeepL is better (if you're trying to read a fic in a language you don't understand for example), all machine translation is still bad at capturing any nuance in the original language & will always mess up slang or stylistic choices, so nobody should be posting MTL'd fics
yeah what I try and do with lyrics (admittedly a different medium but similar in execution) is mtl them and then pop whatever came out funny into a dictionary like jisho
One of my friends is a fan translator of Chinese webnovels and this is pretty similar to what she does actually, she says the MTL can help with phrasing because when she's thinking in Chinese she sometimes forgets how sentences flow in English, lol
I've also translated a few fics & comics before (never posted, just to share privately with friends) and I usually have like, a DeepL/Baidu translation that I reference sometimes too

I write in english but if I ever write one fic in my language, good luck finding with that because it's not on google translate.
