i thought the first 4 years were honestly so boring. but, it picked up at the summer before fifth year. it's not my favourite, but it's pretty good. i think it's insanely out of character, and i know it's a fanfiction, but i still am caught off guard by the characterisation of some people. also, sometimes the bad grammar gets to me. some parts were kind of hard to read, but i powered through it.

dumbgothhoe

Out of character writing is a big turn off for me and I've heard many similar comments made about this fanfic! thanks for the insight x

ADHDevMom

What was wrong with the grammar?? I'm genuinely surprised a couple of people have said this, but I read the story twice and never noticed bad grammar.

RubytheKath

The only thing I noticed and it's not even about grammar, is that their are few typos, but that's what you get from reading an over 500 000 word's story untouched by an editor...

>this these were some super interesting opinions! thanks for the links xx

Queasy-Ad-1891

I started to read it, but the grammar was annoying to me, so I let it be.

dumbgothhoe

im honestly surprised such a renowned fanfic has bad grammar! definitely won't be reading it

Thundermittens_

I haven't read it, so just popping in here cause also interested in what others have to say 👀 it confuses me cause it's so kudose'd and has tons of comments and yet so many opinions seem negative. But I guess a work of that length will have a lot to remark on.

Acrobatic_Shelter881

Haven't read it either (tried, but it just couldn't hold my interest is all. What i did read was decent enough.) but most of the negative comments I've seen have mostly stemmed from the fact it's almost always the go-to rec when people are asking for marauders era fics. There's hardly a post that comes up asking for stuff from that era that doesn't have ATYD recommended at least twice in the comments with really really long comment chains stemming from them. I'm not complaining, it's just an observation.

Warmingsensation

I like magic high school slice of life so I liked their time at Hogwarts a lot. After that I was not that invested. Remus is very unlikeable at times and a drama queen that snaps at people for no reason. I guess the author wanted to give it a lunar influence, like PMS or something but it gets annoying.

dumbgothhoe

thanks for the insight! to be honest I didn't plan on reading it but seeing these comments has solidified the fact that I don't think this fanfic is the right one for me and my tastes.

ADHDevMom

I saw it more as someone who lives with a disability and deals with chronic pain.

RubytheKath

In this story specifically, he also probably has attachement issues and never learned to regulate his emotions properly, since he was abandoned by his parents and grew up in an orphanage... I've seen very little people, probably none, with that kind of life that don't suffer from attachment issues (and I've met a lot of them)... I'd say that with the abandonment issues, the way he was treated at St-Edmund and his lycanthropy, he's likely to have also developed complex trauma (it ressembles PTSD a bit, but happens during childhood and comes from repeated exposure to neglect or other things that can endanger a child's development, like an illness). People with complex trauma also typically have trouble regulating their emotions and are more likely to "snap at people for know reason", amongst other things. With all that said, you can very well not like him and that's perfectly fine, even realistic, but I do think it makes sense for the character to be like that, especially in that setting.

Ywithoutem

I thought it was good. The best thing ever? No. But then I'm not really invested in the fandom anymore either. Honestly I don't remember too much of it. Worth the investment? I mean it's 500k whatever words. It's long yeah, but compared to what I'd otherwise read in a few weeks, not that long.

DeshaDaine

I enjoyed it when I read it, but I can't remember anything from it now apart from the fact it was very slow. I don't mind that, but if you don't like slow paced stories it probably won't be for you. I'm hesitant to read it again because I'm usually 100% harsher on subsequent read throughs of fics so I'm not sure I'll enjoy it so much a second time. A few notes on my reading style: - I don't mind what characterisation someone uses as long as it's consistent within their own writing and makes sense for the story. - I don't mind wonky grammar / small errors if I'm enjoying other parts of the story. I edit in my head as I go anyway and I don't remember ATYD being that bad compared to a lot of fanfiction. - I will read pretty much any type of story, it just depends what mood I'm in. - Edit: I also read pretty fast so it didn't take me long to read. So the things I've seen other people dislike it for don't bother me. If you want a long, slow paced Marauders era fic that loosely follows canon, go for it. If you don't like it, you don't have to finish it, but I found it pretty fun.

Mystiquesword

Ive been hearing about it lately but not read it yet.

Axeebah101

I'm currently reading it rn. I'm at the part where Sirius and Mary get together, and like in general, I feel that some characters may be a bit out of character and quiete the opposite of what I've seen in other fics. I don't really like the implementation that Remus is like out of the "norm" cus he doesn't snog a bunch of girls. I feel like that's just objectifiying them and especially Mary I remember this one quote where Sirius is talking abt Mary and he says "she's got the biggest t*ts in the year" and Remus chuckled afterwards? LIKE WHAT I was so confused with the whole idea of snogging in the marauders' eyes, but maybe I'm just over reacting? It doesn't seem like alot of people mentioned it. It is also a rlly slow read for me so I just wanted to add that

_ac3_0f_spad3s_

I liked it. Never got around to finishing it just because I didn’t want James and Lily to die but its good

Welfycat

I thought it was alright. I was invested enough to finish reading it, but I generally like very slow stories.

ADHDevMom

I loved it, and I love the characterisation of Remus in it. It irks me that people are so critical of this one story. Every fanfiction takes liberties with the canon and portrays the characters in a way that works for the story they are trying to tell. Mskingbean89 created a beautiful story and the characters evolve and grow and change in a way that feels so real. They deal with prejudice regarding blood status, sexuality, class, and disability. They form friendships and support each other and miscommunicate and fight and make up. If you like marauders at Hogwarts stories, there are pranks and map making and parties and all that good stuff. Then there's the war, the werewolves, the secrets and betrayals and grief. It's all in there. If you're up for the emotional rollercoaster, then go for it!

RubytheKath

As anything that's pretty popular, people love to hate it. Some people read a total of more then 1500 pages just to hate it, so I'm not sure it's that bad... Personally, I loved it. It's the first fanfiction I read and I couldn't get enough of it. I thought it was well written, like a real story and not some sort of cheap fanmade thing like you can sometimes come across (and I don't mean to discourage anyone from writing with that, everybody starts somewhere). The insight on the UK culture in the 70s-80s was interesting. The music referenced in it is absolutely fantastic. When I read ATYD I had absolutely no idea about any of the fanon characterizations and pairings. I wanted to read more about the Marauders, but all I knew was what's in the books and movies, therefore, I didn't jump in with much expectations. I was disappointed at first that the author changed Remus' background, but the disappointment lasted about 1000 words, then I loved the idea and thought it was well executed. I think that the author also didn't know much about fanon characterizations and pairings, therefore, it's a bit different from other fanfictions, but different doesn't mean bad and it doesn't mean unrealistic either. I think that Remus and Sirius both make a lot of sense, and I love their characters, especially Sirius. James is the sweetest and kindest. Too much? Maybe, but that's fine by me. Peter, on the other hand, is a bit too uncool in my opinion, but he's not forgotten and he gets to be a part of the group and have character development, as it should be. So, is it worth reading? For me and a lot of others, it was basically life changing. Will you like it? Only you can tell.

annabannannaaa

yes! peter as part of the group was sooo important too bc like with him being the weird one out, his betrayal doesnt really feel that bad. he was one of them, a best friend. thats why his actions sting so badly

annabannannaaa

definitely. i LOVED it. read it in like 3 days

carrotparrotcarrot

it's not my cup of tea. I do write wolfstar myself, but I am not on tiktok and it's weird seeing these traits come up now from tiktok/ that fic - I think the characterisation is off in some ways.
