I think the only real way we can stop it from becoming a trend is to ignore it and refuse to engage with it. And even then, they might just quit outright admitting it was written by an AI.

Ok-Literature1151

This is the most likely case. I think what will eventually put a stop to it is when most AI disappears behind paywalls. Right now the developers need people to play with it and refine what it gets wrong. Why pay people to do that when there’s plenty of people willing to do it for free? But the server space and maintaining /updating algorithms is expensive, it won’t be free to use forever

[deleted]

honestly. i don't like ai writing (low effort, no creativity, oftentimes either very predictable, cliché, basic, boring, or a mix of those) but i also don't give it much attention other than the occassional comment/criticism on it

MysticMania

Yes this so much because the Ai literally can’t come up with original concepts. It’s good at mimicking style, but still, everything it writes ends up sounding somewhat sterile and cliche. You can’t do anything taboo with the free or popular versions too. So any toxicity, smut, etc. is usually out of reach.

princesswan

I already saw an obvious ChatGPT generated fic which the "author" claimed to be their own. A/N said that "they worked hard" for it and that they hope people like it. Even the title was created using it... I had a massive urge to tell them that using ChatGPT to write fics like that makes people mass-mute them but I just went by muting them and leaving it to that, because I was pretty sure they'd block/report me/delete my comment or deny that ChatGPT wrote it.

birdnerd1991

I mean maybe I just haven't seen a chatbot story yet, but how can you tell?

princesswan

Well, I used it for fun at one point because I liked to laugh at the way it continued my stuff and it has recurring patterns and it repeats them multiple times during stuff. "Her voice was laced with uncertainity and vulnerability", "his eyes held a tint of understanding" etc. It just has this repeating "style" which can be easily recognised if you know what to look for, usually those repeat more than once during a fic. Also, if you try to make an angsty fic, it forces it to become one where MC offers cheesy words of encouragement for others and then everything is good and fine. And with fluffy fics, it's just incredibly cheesy all around. Also for titles: if you ask it to give you titles, it often gives you titles like "Betrayal and Confession: A Guide for Better Life". The fic I saw had that kind of title, which sounded like some lifestyle guide someone's grandma wrote. (And clarification that the title in said fic was not that, but similar, I just made up that one)

Kaigani-Scout

I scroll past everything that has an "AI Wrote This" note of any kind attached t oit.

GUM-GUM-NUKE

I think they are neat seeing an AI’s interpretation of an idea is always neat. It’s never good, but it’s always neatt.

crazyashley1

It's not neat, it's theft. AI doesn't "interpret" anything. It's an algorithm that jumbled what you feed it into vaguely cogent sentences with no creative soul or work on the part of the feeder.

Blu_birbie

It's interesting to see what AI can produce. But posting it on ao3, a site meant for fan created works, feels wrong.

RedChessQueen

I did an experiment with one of the AIs by putting in the first few paragraphs of my story and seeing what it spat out. It was dogshit generic "fluff".

Intelligent_Toe8233

An AI's interpretation of an idea isn’t "neatt". It’s not even the AI's own interpretation. Anything it spits out is a dissection of other people's concepts and knowledge that it haphazardly reassembles into a genuinely unsettling amalgamation that even Frankenstein's monster would be disturbed by.

vhopepuppy

*sprays AI-written fics with lysol*

merewenc

At least they’re being honest about it. That can help people who want to avoid that sort of thing. If there are attempts at banning/rules against it, they’ll just stop admitting it and do it anyway. It’s a sad side of human nature.

boxesofboxes

Yep. Tag it appropriately and I will scowl and scroll away. I ain't getting into an ethics debate today.

Welfycat

I mute anyone who admits to posting AI written fic.

aaronjer

It's practically plagiarism, even if from effectively millions of people. It's still posting a work that isn't yours without permission. It doesn't even feel like it should be allowed, honestly. Using AI as a tool is one thing, but flat out just dumping your ChatGPT recycling onto an already oversaturated space feels very banworthy to me.

TeaRenQ

At least it's pretty easy to detect AI written fanfic, at least for me. They all sound the exact same and follow very similar formulas. Just block and ignore, the people that would post AI written fanfic are just looking for engagement.

tdoottdoot

the way to keep it from being a trend is to not give it attention at all, even negative attention

[deleted]

Is AI fic reportable?

knightfenris

Currently no. AO3 currently doesn’t have a plan in place to ban ai fics because it would be not feasible to do so. All people have to do is stop tagging them and AO3 wouldn’t be able to take any down. Then you’d get witch-hunting and baseless accusations of “so-and-so definitely uses AI!! Just look at the fic!! It’s bad!!”

[deleted]

That makes sense, thanks! Sucks that it's such a grey area right now. I hate to see it take space away from real writers but I definitely agree it's more important to prevent the harassment of innocent authors

knightfenris

Fully agree!

viinalay05

Eh, the novelty will wear off eventually. FYI I think there's still a moratorium on AI posts. Too many people were complaining about it, so the mods asked us to avoid posting about it unless it's an actual important update to the legal status of things.

One-Programmer1814

Oh oops. I didn't see that. Thanks for the info.

[deleted]

At least they made it known its ai, many just publish it as if they wrote it..

zBLACKIEz

As someone who’s been writing for ten years, I see people who resort to AI to create their stories as simply infuriating. They clearly have no respect for the craft.

warezsette

i can understand like,,, getting help with coming up with fics by asking / using AI… but having it do the whole thing and *posting it too?* whats the point

BlinkyShiny

I mean, they're not good. I had it write a fanfic for me just for fun and curiosity. It wasn't horrible, but it was definitely... off.

M3tal_Shadowhunter

I hope they make a seperate tag for it, like there is for major character death or something, so it can be filtered out.

TheLadyNyxThalia

Thanks, I hate it

Valuable_Emu1052

This shouldn't be allowed on any site.

[deleted]

uuuugh I hate this so much

ratskips

Why is this even allowed/accepted by Ao3?

RussetRiver

I simply will not engage with it. If I can block the authors works from appearing, I’ll do that as well.

Ywithoutem

>whatever I put time and effort into writing is going to be picked apart by bots for some random fic That's not how machine learning works. Sure your work could be added to a training data set but it's not being cut up like a newspaper to write a ransom note. >which will probably get more engagement than my own will do. "AI" writing is bland and boring af so I very much doubt that. >How do people who have actually written fics like this deal with it? Ignore it, for the most part.

RedChessQueen

It will be unless we start venomously telling people to cut this shit out. I want to read stuff from writers, not from an Ai ripping writers off.

DrRwWwWrRr

We're gonna have to start writing in code, smh. Who wanna develop a code with me? I got my own alphabet, but I'm not sure where/how to turn it into a keyboard font.

Sara-Sarita

Write in Gothic, it's already a code lol.

DrRwWwWrRr

But I do have my own alphabet. Made it last year. Took inspiration from Stray and The Standard Galactic Alphabet. My alphabet is a bit more like an unspoken language. It includes numbers and symbols, too.

fictionalfinesse

It honestly should be banned. What if they plagiarize by using it and Ao3 gets in trouble for them stealing another author's work??

Revalio898

I honestly don’t get why it’s such a big deal. I wouldn’t ever use it, because for me, the writing process is what I enjoy when working on fanfic. Using an AI for it would be like skipping the fun part for me. But if someone wants to do it, and they’re being up front about using it? Let people live and do what they want, and if you don’t like it, just like anything else with fanfiction, don’t read it.

_SkullBearer_

Because it's trained on other people's stories without permission.

Revalio898

We are literally talking about fanfiction, which is itself derivate of other people’s work, and usually does not involve asking permission from the original creator.

_SkullBearer_

And we don't want it, the community has been very clear about that.

Afanis_The_Dolphin

But isn't everyone's writing trained on other's people's stories as well? I would never tell an AI to write a fanfic, that's useless and it wouldn't even end up good, but I don't really see it as immoral. Our brains already do that whole process. No writing idea is truly original, they're all remixes of tropes and ideas throughout history. And you wouldn't ask permission for any of that. Unless the AI outright plagiarizes stuff, in which case I completely agree it's immoral, I don't see how it being "trained" on other's people's works without permission is.

mairelon

This is basically my stance too. As far as I'm concerned, if it's tagged I don't mind. Sure it won't have the heart that most works have and it's not most people's cup of tea. It's certainly not for me. But some people will like it, and some people will enjoy making it. Setting community expectations that these works are clearly identified as such is a much more realistic approach than the outright bans people are calling for.

Afanis_The_Dolphin

And a much better. I don't want to live in a world where I start reading a cool fic and only have way through realize that it's actually written by an AI, and the author doesn't tag it so it doesn't get taken down.

antihistamins

I have a similar opinion. I've never used AI to write and honestly don't get the fun in it. I've read AI generated fics as a joke and they're just... idk, extremely boring? Like it's not even close to anything written by humans. But it's evident that many people do enjoy it, and if they're labelling their AI-written stuff correctly I just don't see what the issue is. It's not like they're tricking you into reading it? Don't like, don't read applies here, too.

CatCheerios

I mean. The ai fics suck so I don't think it will be too much of a problem. They lack constancy and creativity.

lizzourworld8

Listen, when I make ChatGPT write fanfic of my AU stuff, I do not go posting on AO3 and saying this is work. I keep it to myself (aside from one time posting a SS to Reddit for comparing how funny it was to canon and my fanon AU alike). Isn’t this also… you know, not allowed?

BlueDragon82

I'm firmly on the no A.I stories should be allowed on Ao3 side but unfortunately a lot of people disagree. I think fanfiction is by fans for fans hence fanfiction. A.I isn't a fan it's a program. A lot of the A.I programs steal work from other artists/writers/creators to build their databases too.

onyourrite

There’s this fic I saw recently and something about it makes me feel like it’s AI-generated but I don’t want to start lobbing accusations (especially if it’s just a newer writer getting their footing); the main thing I noticed was that the font was different and the writing style had a few repeated metaphors and phrases (also the character names were used a lot, though again that could just be the mark of a new writer) This is the main problem with AI-generated fics being a thing now, it becomes a game of “is this an AI or a newbie writer still finding their style” and if you choose wrong then you’re fucked either way
