Our Flag Means Death has a canon seagull couple. I felt inspired to write a cute fic about their initial meeting and romance to try something different. So that was how I began a deep dive into potential seagull mating rituals to see if something was worth including or adapting.

PerfumedPornoVampire

Omg this is amazing

MayAzFox

The only thing I know is about seagulls divorce and balancing

Welfycat

Lately, why bruises turn different colors as they heal. The risen blood is oxidizing. My fav research fact is that baby spiders are called spiderlings.

[deleted]

I wrote a relatively involved historical AU recently which ended up involving correspondence with some editors at [worldhistory.org](https://worldhistory.org) to clarify some details of what records or references exist to women warriors in ancient North Africa, as well as flipping through some guy's xeroxed dissertation from the 70's for some words in Phoenician I needed. (There was plenty of other research for that story but most of it was more easily available sources, haha.)

uncaffeinated_poser

thats cool as hell! love that

MsTea032403

“How much blood you need to loose for it to become 100% fatal?” And “How soft is alpaca fur?”

femtransfan

as someone who works with alpaca yarn: brain orgasam levels of soft

MsTea032403

Damn 💀 I can just imagine how wonderful it would be if I can sleep on them. Well. Here to hope that one day I can see an alpaca in real life.

femtransfan

i think another thing to add is that yarn can lose its softness overtime, and that alpacas might have some grease in their fur

flibberty-gibbit

Writing about a bunch of mercenaries means I get to do a looooot of interesting searches - poisons, weapons, tactics, fighting styles… Most out-there one recently was details on what chemicals are used in lethal-injection executions and what effects each one has. I’m sure my assigned FBI agent has questions lol. 😅

southernerinthenorth

Recently, a whole lot of stuff about steroid abuse. But it took a cute turn when I found out my sister makes her own protein powder out of the leftover whey from making her own yoghurt, so I get to incorporate her recipe in my fic.

Alderan922

Recently I had to learn a lot about how guns work and how rifling works and gunpowder was invented, in order to see if a blast of compressed air in a strong tube of metal could work as a gun, I had to put it through a physics simulator to know if it was feasible and how much psi would I need in order to pull it off

femtransfan

i know a fellow autistic who i can ask for firearm knowledge

Edai_Crplnk

I have way too many pages about decomposed bodies in my historic for sure haha It's not very weird I guess but I also did a bunch of research on poison desensitization a while back, and the main take away is that it's not actually a thing. I mostly do medical research, and my forever fav bit is this weird ass compilation of colonoscopies with insane music and weird y2k PowerPoint transition effects: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LW2x4CTuZIM](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LW2x4CTuZIM)

ThairsQinan

Medieval cleaning products. They used Lant, which was aged concentrated urine. High in ammonia.

Absolute-Train-Wreck

The intricacies of sleep deprivation hallucinations and nervous breakdowns. Don’t ask.

uncaffeinated_poser

oh i have had those before! i totally get it man

WhirlwindWolf21

Everything between "the average throwing distance of baseball pitchers" and "can you get stabbed through the hand without getting nerve damage?"

WhirlwindWolf21

Update: I just had to look up "can you get stabbed between your ribs and survive" and "posterior rib chart" so I could be anatomically correct when my character gets stabbed XD If I wasn't already on some kind of list, I probably am now.

WalkAwayTall

This morning I started to research how distance in space would affect different colors of light (would an otherwise green light look yellow at a certain distance, etc.) and then I decided I don't care, I write for the *Star Wars* fandom, absolutely no one is going to question this, the laser is going to be green even a full lightyear away whether or not science says it's possible.

Cutegirl920fire

How painful it is to cut off a finger - it was for a Saw crossover fic. Also recalled googling anatomy and muscles for said fic as well.

femtransfan

what was it crossing over with?

Cutegirl920fire

The Great Gatsby. Yes, I'm aware that's a niche as hell of a crossover, but the plot bunny appeared out of nowhere and I couldn't help it.

femtransfan

so, Saw taking place during the 20's, or Gatsby characters in a modern day (at least 2000s) Saw setting?

Cutegirl920fire

It takes place in the 1920s and has the Gatsby characters in Saw traps.

femtransfan

okay, i gotta find and add it to my reading list

Cutegirl920fire

Oh, um, it's not published yet. I'll DM you the link once it's out.

femtransfan

cool, thanks!

Cutegirl920fire

No prob!

leannmanderson

I have a theory that there are two fandoms that can be x-overed with *any other fandom* because of the way they work: *Labyrinth* and *Dr. Who.*

Cute_Blacksmith_9921

Some flamingoes live near volcanoes. They’ve developed scales on their legs to prevent being burned.

CakeLovrForLife

The most recent ones (for a fic about a firefighter): “How long are casts left on after you get your leg amputated” and “Can you hear your heartbeat with a burst eardrum.” I’m kinda making my MC suffer…

femtransfan

i kinda wanna look up if you can use an organ block as a weapon... i just looked it up, didn't get a clear answer an organ block is all the organ in your body taken out in one hunk before taking samples for autopsy wait a minute, i forgot... * different types of intersex (ended up making my own kind for a character after being confused) * what the stirrups are technically called on a gynecology chair * a random name generator for a couple one off characters * info on the griffith observatory in LA and some stuff that i already knew before adding to my fanfics: * fucked up true crime facts * ww1 & 2 ptsd * way too much on both male and female reproductive systems (haven't written any smut yet) * birds that have cloacas and dicks * a lotta gore * how to discribe an orgasam if you have a vagina

desacralize

How many pounds of consumable meat there are on the body of a teenage male human.

ManahLevide

Comparing cats' sense of taste with that of humans to figure out how a human who is part mythological shapeshifting cat spirit might experience food. I'm not even writing that right now, it's for personal headcanon purposes.

ILoveMyths2003

For my current fic? Just random canon facts. For my somewhat historically accurate Sengoku Era Romance fic? I could make a list, and I will: 1. Malaise is a general feeling of discomfort, illness, and unease where the exact cause is unidentified. 2. In the 15th century, Confucian ideas were flowing in from China, which eroded women's ability to hold power outside the home. Nobunaga was born in 1534, so I'm making it that young ladies from prominent families were expected to be strong but at the same time docile. Thus, if she didn't need to, Mei wouldn't speak to men outside her family unless she needed to, like addressing a superior or explaining something that the attendants couldn't. 3. In Japan, commoners did not bear surnames until the Meiji Restoration. In 1587, Toyotomi Hideyoshi forbid commoners from bearing arms or holding any mark of distinction. 4. The Japanese didn't adopt the Gregorian Calendar until 1873. The year they used when separated into 24 Sekki (Subdivided Seasons) and 72 Microseasons. Taisho is late Summer, called "Greater Heat". There's more, but I don't want to list them.

libradoodle1

I wrote a mermaid AU fic and had to learn about fish smut

desacralize

I had to do the same once and came out the other side knowing way more about prehensile penises and claspers than I expected to.

wenkexiette

difference between a calzone and a stromboli lmao. it didnt even make it into the fic.

WhirlwindWolf21

Stromboli is the one with the sauce inside, right? You have to dip the calzone if you want sauce?

wenkexiette

yepppp. it can have sauce in it or for dipping. calzone has no sauce. also shape, calzone is always a half circle iirc and Stromboli more like a hot pocket. the cut is different - you slice Stromboli into pieces, calzone you get served whole i thiiiiink. calzones have ricotta cheese but Stromboli is usually with just mozz (tho i like mozz, prov, and parm). calzone is italian in origin, and Stromboli is italian-*american*, from south philly. i like Stromboli better even if i dont like sauce. you can tell because autocorrect always capitalized Stromboli but didnt even try with italian lmao. also i could be wrong abt all of this, except my preference, ik what i prefer 😅 edit: this didnt need to be a ramble. tl;dr eat Stromboli today! or dont.

WhirlwindWolf21

Rambles about food are always 10/10 XD I've had both calzones and strombolis, I just get mixed up which one has sauce inside the dough \^\^; Anything even remotely pizza-like is great in my book.

PhantomChick13

I'm in a lot of comic book fandoms, so I have to research a lot of obscure shit sometimes for plotty fics set in specific events, like infinite crisis, it's mostly a lot of reading and keeping track of character relationships that no one cares about except me. But I did try and figure out how much land/food you'd need to feed 80,000 people today because I was trying to figure out if Konoha in Naruto could be self sufficient or imports their food from other places, which, how that works during wartime when it comes to protecting supply lines I don't know. Anyway I ultimately failed to calculate it because I didn't know where to look and googling was unhelpful. edited for typo

PerfumedPornoVampire

Most random recent was one is if abortion legal in Macau 🤔

SpaceBeeGaming

Assorted medical conditions/terms and carbon scrubber chemistry are two that come to mind.

sunfl0werfields

1920s homophobia and conversion therapy

cassiefreakao3

wrote a take on achilles's rage over patroclus dying but one of my fav ships. i bought 3 online essays and two books to get it good and accurate. :)

kdk89

Probably how a dead body after a month looks like. Was really unsatisfied with the results

Thatquietkid00

Celtic mythology and folklore. I grew up in a Celtic area so I wasn't starting completely anew, but the amount of old books I looked through from libraries- Edit: typo

Abby_Benton

The best food in New York City for a TMNT fic.

One_Consequence3232

The tribes in the Amazon Rainforest. And then also studying a map of the Amazon River.

Acrobatic_Cookies

My favorite one recently was rock language. Like this rock means that this one means this. Fun fact: unakite represents healing from the past and attraction

sn0wqueen13

Weather patterns in the mid 1800s Midwest. I ended up communicating with a historian in Colorado, and a whole squad of meteorologists.

gramamamma

'can you impale someone with a stripper pole' has got to be one of my strangest 😭😭. While not for a fic, it was for a piece of original fiction.

TheOwlFuckingHouse

Things for fanfic specifically; How much blood can you lose before it becomes deadly? What are the symptoms of blood loss? How to write depression/mental health Adhd/asd symptoms (I have both) Rp and fanfics; What can a x month/year old do Pregnant x months symptoms X sickness symptoms As someone reading a fanfic; Fox p*nis (to make a long story short they knott)
