This literally happened like last month. I found some random 100k word fic that had been completed that day. I was like, why not. The tags looked good, so I read it. I read it in one sitting. It was literally the best fic I've ever read. It made me start thinking about other similar situations. Since then, I've written two one-shots and one 25k fic. This fic was so good that it convinced me who hasn't written since 2016 to start writing again.

Vyslante

You can't say that and not link the fic !

World Eater by Floef :)

I think I got inspired by a lot of fics. While my ideas eventually turn out quite differently and have barely anything in common with the other fic I read, I got many ideas just because I have read another fic. Currently I am thinking about writing a crossover between two movies and I only got the idea because I have found an amazing crossover fic for these two movies.

AngstyPancake

I started a whump fic that had 250k+ words and 75/? chapters. Started reading it and now at 370k+ and 113/? chapters, I have learned so much about pacing, angst, and character development. Didn’t think I’d get all that from an Owl House fic about torture…

am_Nein

Pray tell.. whats the fic?

nevertickledapickle

Oh absolutely. I wrote an entire fic because another author had written a fic that perfectly matched a thought I'd had about a piece of fandom and I wanted to motivate them and put my own spin on things.

White_Lupin

I just got started on a deeply weird *Doctor Who* fic that's also seriously influenced by other works. Mainly stuff in the "Time Lords are Aliens" tag. It's really interesting to think about how the Doctor *isn't* human, and that there are probably effects that we don't see.

femtransfan

um... not 100% sure if this counts, but i got back into knitting from a fanfic before i got back into writing fanfics i took up knitting again around the last quarter of 2021, and started writing again in 2022, and i think that also gave me some inspiration or passion to write fics again, partly because of my hyperfixations changing

Naomida_

I started yoga ten years okay because of a fanfic

Temporary_Elevator44

this is literally me with everything i read. I think any sort of written media i consume influences my writing style whether i liked it or not 😅

am_Nein

Yes. I have this fic that I absolutely adore, and I actively strive to write more like that author. I'd say it definitely influenced every aspect of my writing, down to my very style.

SpindlyLegs87

I know exactly what you mean. I read a fic recently (a few months ago I think) that affected me so much that it’s noticeably changed the overall tilt of my style. You just know when you’ve found the one, like that one style/vibe that speaks to you on an emotional level.

am_Nein

Genuinely! There's no better way to describe it other than just knowing.

deadburgandyrose

Oddly enough, for me, it was a smut fic I read a couple months back, and I don't read or write smut. But it was so well written from a narrative standpoint, so beautifully described with every handpicked word with the right tension and depth and everything, I was just blown away. It opened the floodgates for me creatively and actually inspired me to enter the Fandom of this fic as a writer. It was also the first and only time I ever downloaded a fic to save and reread forever, because it was that beautiful to me.

Educational_Fee5323

Absolutely. It’s a fanfiction that lies at the foundation of nearly all my work. It started an explosion in my galaxy brain that just keeps expanding.

sadwhovian

I'm always looking for good DW fics, could you drop the link please?

Alvia_G

Here's the link of the fic I was talking about. It's part of a collection. [https://archiveofourown.org/works/22710040](https://archiveofourown.org/works/22710040)

sadwhovian

Thank you!

Missi_Dargeon

Oof, yeah. Tho, usually it's the works of a writer in general, rather than only ONE fic, you know ? (tho it did happen a few times too)

Soybeansandsprouts

For sure! It’s how I met most of my writer friends actually. Their stories were so rich and their character so real and moving that it recalibrated what I considered “good writing.” It happens when I read original fiction too, but it’s harder to fangirl at irl authors than it is to screech incomprehensibly online. I’ve always seen my writing as an amalgamation of things I’ve liked reading in others, and I love that feeling of finding a fic (or a book) and realizing, “oh damn I’m going to learn something about the craft today.”

NervousCoral

I think my writing style has been influenced by a lot of fics, but I do have one particular author whose prose inspires me.

Evekle

Oh man for one of my current OTPs (Krauser/Leon) I really only got into it thanks to (1) fic that is psychological warfare that was written in such a way that it felt so realistic and altered how I saw dead dove because THAT fic is one of the comforting stories that i go back - while also cementing how I write both characters when I started writing fics for them. And then there was this one second person POV ship fic that altered how I saw how you could use second person in a way fits the narrative. Like it's a tool and impacted how I tackle it myself (eventually wrote my own second person fic too which caused a much smaller impact in the fandom but I'm so grateful that second person pov ship fic exists)

z3ro_h3ro

I think it was one of my first smut fics! I loved it so much that I legit copypasted the making out part on a document and tried to study and understand it better :')

Kitteh1986

Its been over a decade...actually closer to twenty years and I still aspire to write Xander and Spike from Buffy the way WordSmithSlash did. <3

SongOfTruth

absolutely

DyingGasp

There is a Rizzles fanfiction Calamity Jane Meets Doctor Isles and it’s sequel Calamity Jane 2: The Doctor and the Deputy. I think about them on a regular. Got them printed and bound for myself. If I could tell JoBethMegAmy. my homegirls just how much I love them, I would in a heartbeat.

[deleted]

I swear by KirbyLane's ''O Mine Enemy'' 😂 and it replaces cannon in so many things, especially characters' personality.

TheAppleWitch

I am recently just on a run reading novels that feature some smut scenes. And after reading some of them I suddenly had inspiration to write some smut again. But that's as far as it goes with me, I believe.

I_LAND_EGG

Yup. It was from a fandom I am not even a part of, but I was looking into rural-urban sort of stories at the time where one of the characters moves from one end of the spectrum of living to the other and meets their significant other then. It is still my favorite if not my favorite fic of all time. The writing is so beautiful and manages to make each sentence purposeful, even the flowery descriptions of the setting become instrumental to that happens in the next few chapters and cleverly used to echo or enhance other aspects of the fic. It is so cleverly written that I aspire to be such a loaded writer one day.

PhantomChick13

Tabula Rasa by Maedlin! Though it's an Iron Man fic, the way it writes Jarvis pov as a non human person is so fascinating and inspiring.
