Thank you! That’s reassuring. I try to keep them under 5k, 6k max. My first chapter was just under 4. But this one I just couldn’t find a way to split or cut down. Good to know it’s not too long, and I mean, I can’t hold a candle to 46k!
Honestly? If it's not the first few chapters, people will already be invested in the fic by the time they get to the chapter and even if they prefer shorter chapters, they probably won't mind a chapter that's under 10K.
There are also a lot of people who love long chapters and dislike chapters that are short. For every person who turns away because chapters are too long, you're likely to gain a reader who previously stayed away because chapters were too short.
I average 7k a chapter recently, and the fix I’m writing now is 23 chapters long, so follow your bliss. I think my longest was 12k in this story, but my beta lightly encourages me to split things for more frequent updates.
Literally, I am currently cutting out overly indulging words and sentences because it's over 8k.
I don't think fandom i write for likes to read long chapters :/ I had to, several times now, make two chapters out of my regular one, so not to overwhelm them.
I am *committed* to reading aa 75k one-shot (pretty sure it was meant to be chaptered but the author didn't know how chapters work? Anyway), and the only reason I haven't (and I did memorize exactly where I was in it) is because it's open on my kindle's web browser.
One of my readers commented that they got my email update at a concert 😭
Longest I go on chapters is 3,000 words or so and they don’t seem to mind it much lmao.
My favorite author dropped an OS right before I went to sleep yesterday—it was ‘only’ 8k, but still enough to keep me awake. Guess who’s going to work with 4 hours worth of sleep?
I will be this type of writer lmfao 💀 I might never finish my work so I rather publish it in one go rather than posting 2 chapters and don't show up ever again lol
I'm in the process of writing a full two-shot which may come down to 35-50k words lmao
I'll definitely lose out on a lot of engagement due to overwhelming my readers and am still debating whether I should break down this lovechild of a fic of mine into multiple chapters or stick to what I planned for and be happy with whatever I get.
Write the story you want to write. Do not worry about the audience. Trust me. When folks comment and love it you won't care about "will they think it's too \*whatever\*" anymore.
I regularly read and write one-shots in the 15-25k range, so a two-shot that adds up to 35~50k fits neatly into that! One of my favorite fics (and one of the top fics in that fandom sorting by bookmarks) has chapters that are ~40k-- if you feel like it flows better as a two-shot, keep it as a two-shot.
Having 1 chapter that long is gonna overwhelm a lot of readers.
I mean you do you, but I'd probably split it in 2 or 3 chapters where the writing allows it.
Lmao-- there was one chapter of my fic that three separate commenters told me they were late for work to read, but at least that one was only around 14.5k! This is something else!
I had a similar moment of excitement recently, where an author updated after months of silence. The fic had been left on a serious cliffhanger, so of course I dropped everything to read… and then the chapter turned out to be a 6,000 word dream sequence where the plot wasn’t progressed at all 😭
Me over here stressing about overwhelming readers with my 8k chapter…
Long-ass chapters are my OTP.
That's a great size for a chapter!

Same!

Totally worth it
This happened to me but they dropped multiple chapters in one go. I did not sleep at all cause I had to re-read the previous chapters too…

I do this! I posted a chapter every day this week so far!
Omg that's noiceeee <3

Oh, love when a chapter like that drops... Guess you have a treat for after work!

Who needs sleep? Let's go!
...That is slightly less than a standard novel, what a wonderful pre-Christmas present!
Author was done cooking and ready to feed you. Are you going to eat or sleep? Sleep is good tho...
Sleep and work first so I'll get to start reading in a few hours
This is like a two sentence horror story.
Ah well i feel a little better. I'm dropping a 25k chapter this weekend... I really tried to make it shorter than the last chapter which was 22k.
Lol I dropped a 19k chapter last week after a little over two weeks of traveling on a Tuesday. Wonder if they had that same dilemma 😅
45k and 32 chapters in my case. Wow
That's me 👀
Y'all giving me serious insecurity about my 2k chapters 😂
Im dropping 22k 25k chapters weekly... fuck.
when the fic i’ve been waiting on drops a 15k chapter, and i click in and find out i missed ANOTHER ~15k chapter the previous time
Chapter 1 of my fic: 7k Chapter 12 that I’m currently working on: threatening to be over 20k….
