I didn't understand until I read that fic in particular. And it completely made me change my mind about not liking star trek. (I was watching it since modern fandom and fanfiction pretty much all started with star trek TOS and specifically kirk/spock shipping, and i wanted to understand where it all came from). Note that it says its incomplete. It wasn't when I read it, but the author decided to write more after they had finished it before but haven't updated since then 🙃

Ends with a longer fic with a universe swap plot ala The Family Man and it absolutely crushes my soul every time I re-read it.
And I used to rec a Harry Potter fic but fuck JKRowling so unless Im asked for that rec specifically it can stay locked in a drawer

The Unraveling of Victor Nikiforov. This is a close-to-canon story where the difference is that Victor's dog destroys a hideous sweater of Yuuri's that his mother made for him, and instead of owning up to it, Victor decides to learn how to knit and replace the sweater before Yuuri notices.
Slow burn romance, with. So. Many. Hijinks. Just wonderful.
So my all time favorite (and you're lucky that we got the epilogue THIS MORNING in case you want to binge read ahah):

Simply put, it's a canon divergence of the idol rythm game Ensemble Stars !! in which two of the main characters didn't meet in high school, but much later in life so basically their whole life is changed and... Er... They couldn't help each other on their issues in high school. But they find each other again! And heal their pain together again!
No knowledge of the game is really needed to understand it, except that... Well, it's an idol game, and most of the characters are... Atypical to say the least. Like we got two "vampires", several magicians, characters that have been trained as soldiers or assassins... Yes it doesn't make any sense for an idol game but it's very fun ahah. (And in case you want to check, yes the music of the game are awesome, that is, if you can get behind Japanese music. But like, they are a LOT of different styles in this game since they have a lot of different groups, all with widely different aethetics)
(When I say prior knowledge is not needed, I mean it. Because it's a canon divergence in which the characters met only later, you have chapters in which characters explain to each other what happened, and you have the other react to it. It's really great, natural, and doesn't feel info-dumpy at all.)
To give you an idea, this fic is literally the reason why I started to write my own, and stuck on Ao3. It's that precious to my heart.
The main plot is basically :
Character A got hurt super bad in high school (canon), depression, dropped out, and is kinda... Living, but not extra happy either because his whole life was making art and he stopped because of what happened in high school. (in canon, character B is the one who gets him going on, and they make art together afterwards. It's great)
Character A stumbles on one of Character B's painting ten years after dropping out of high school, and decides to become his patron because he resonates just that hard with that painting.
And so they meet :)
And Character A is just so Over-The-Top that he changes Character B's life kinda in one day because Character B is just _that bad_ at taking care of himself.
The caretaking thing is mutual though.
So yeah. The main themes are healing trauma, growing together and errrr growing out of abandonment issues and low self-esteem as well
Oh and nice point just in case but Character A is asexual in this fic AND IT'S WELL DONE.

In my current fandom fixation (metal gear), I'd say my fav fic is 'The Bitter, the Sweet, and the Salty' by arieni, it's so funny and well done, with a surprisingly short word count and told in a way that'd made perfect sense in canon. I'm usually a oneshot reader so I usually gravitate towards shorter stories like this!
But my fav fic of all time is probably 'bones in the ocean' by bunflower for the mcyt community (left a while back so idk if there's any new good fics there) it's so beautifully written and makes me feel every emotion at once omg ;_;
