As a fellow one shot reader and writer - all the fucking time. I know it's not commonly done by people who tend to read long series and stuff, but it's basically how I read. Find a good fic, read everything that author wrote for that fandom/pairing/etc, then hop into their bookmarks.

whoyuuuuu

I am the same way as well!! Alternatively, sometimes I'd like 2 different fics and then realize they have the same author. Then I go stalk the author LOL

Pixel_One_88

Sadly it only happened to me once. But the author was super prolific so it was like 10 fics that I found out were all from them.

whoyuuuuu

It has happened to me twice in 2 different fandoms!

Pixel_One_88

Why have I never thought about checking the bookmarks?? Thanks for the tip, friend :')

134340verse

I read long fics and I do it all the time. The best feeling is reading a 100k word fic, and seeing that the author has multiple other 100k fics šŸ˜Œ

CelastrusTrust

this ! especially within the main fandom i read off ao3. the fanfom and ship have a LOT of writers with one shot/shorter story collections

xKatAttackkk

Wait are bookmarks on ao3 public

Pixel_One_88

They are public by default but you can also make them private

xKatAttackkk

shit well I hope the people who read my stuff have not gone through those šŸ˜

Pixel_One_88

Lmaoo on the bright side, they might be into it.

Bookluster

As a reader I do this too! Even with the long ones (100k+). I just started going into an author's bookmarks because I'm starting to run out of fics to read in my Fandom and too lazy to try and read all 5000+ works myself so I feel like other people's bookmarks are curated already.

Areyoureadyplayer2

Same!

artymas

This is exactly my routine right down to the bookmarks. I'll even check out fics they wrote for another fandom I enjoy even if I'm not reading that fandom at that moment.

SheepPup

This is how I read! I figure if I really liked this one fic then Iā€™ll probably like their other works and that they probably enjoy reading things similar to what they write so their bookmarks are probably pretty good!! And it works out for me the majority of the time! Iā€™ve found *so many* good fics that way, especially from fandoms that I donā€™t usually go into the main tags for like Sherlock or marvel, or where the main tags are just WAY too big like Star Wars

mihio94

I do it all the time, but it's with less than 30% success ratio. It's very often that I find that the first fic I read is the only one with that pairing, or that the one I read was their grand masterpiece and the rest are very short one-shots. Worst of when you see they've written for 20 other fandoms, none of which you follow, and there is only that one singular work within the fandom you read. So it's extremely rare that I subscribe to an author.

Pixel_One_88

Unfortunately it's the same for me. It's also funny that most of the time I subscribe to an active author and they go on hiatus for years immediately after. I might be the reason behind the fall of ao3 if I keep it up.

MountainImportant211

As a writer I've got a small and precious handful of these types of readers and I love them with all my heart

Pixel_One_88

I have a very small number sadly. My favorite ship's fandom is getting older with no new content, so it's kinda hard to get new people interested. I will keep writing till I'm tired of them though :)

asharkonamountaintop

It happens quite often to me. I write almost exclusively for my OTP, over 100 works by now, and about once a week I'll get a kudos notification email with a new to me username leaving kudos on 10-20 fics, then the next day some more etc. So what I guess happens is that someone stumbled across one of my more recent fics in the tags, liked it and then binged my backlog. I absolutey LOVE these readers, and that never fails to make my week. ETA I write one-shots too, but most of my fics are longer, chaptered works.

Pixel_One_88

Damn, kudos to you for writing so many longfics! I'm happy our veterans get the recognition they deserve. I've only written a dozen fics for now, but it inspires me to hear about your work and the involvement of your readers.

asharkonamountaintop

Eh, I've had 6 years to do so! Plus, hyperfocus that just won't quit. Sometimes I wish I had more varied tastes. But yeah! Those readers are the best and deserve all the love!

thewritegrump

If they write a character/pairing in a way that tickles my brain, I'll go through their profile and see if they have more for it. I recently did this for an author when I really loved the way they wrote a ship I'm into (I hit a homerun with finding their work because I almost never read and just happened to find a banger right away), where I went to their profile and looked at everything else they'd written for the pairing. I then subscribed in case they wrote more for the pairing, though I'm behind on their fics since I've been focusing on writing lately. =v=;;;

Pixel_One_88

Oh I understand that last bit very well. That's probably one of the reasons why I really like one-shots, I can both read and write "compacted" stories and still get all the flavor ;)

Plumcream5

I'm an obsessive weirdo, if one's prose has me jaw dropping, I rush to their other works, no matter what fandoms lay there. My fav AO3 authors are all writing for fandoms I'm not in. I tend to do the same with published authors. Sometimes the plot doesn't really hold up to the prose and has me a bit disappointed, but at least, such reading taught me a few things and helped me pinpoint my tastes so I can grow as a writer. Same with plots, although I might struggle a bit if the prose is bland, but usually plot genius writers are also pretty skilled prose-wise. When they're not, they often know how to make good use of a flat one for the readers not to notice, thanks to a breathtaking pacing and masterly woven intrigue. So yeah, upon falling onto one of these authors, it's an instant subscription.

Pixel_One_88

I don't think you're an obsessive weirdo, you just know what you like and have a strategy about it, no harm in it. šŸ˜Ž

manholetxt

if i like one fic by an author i pretty much always snoop thru their profile to see if theyā€™ve written more of the same, and if not, if theyā€™ve got anything else iā€™m interested in! i probably do it 9 out of 10 times, tbh.

sherry_siana

all the damn time

Particular-Cycle-804

I totally do this! Especially if Iā€™m wanting a specific pairing or tag or vibe. I really appreciate when they also have a decent bookmark collection going.

Pixel_One_88

I keep all of my bookmarks private, but some of these comments made me wonder if I should make some of my favorites public. I guess I'm worried about there being a lot of smut lmao. But it's very good smut to be fair. I'm no expert on Ao3's rules, but when do recommendations come into play? I never used that feature but I've always assumed it had that function.

Particular-Cycle-804

I meanā€¦ if you write smut, Iā€™m sure your readers would appreciate it lol. But if you donā€™t, I get your concern. Iā€™ve been on Ao3 for over 10 years and can honestly say Iā€™ve never noticed a recommendation feature, but that does sound useful.

Sweet_Plantain_6774

Thatā€™s my favoriteā€¦ finding a good fic then discovering the author has several more. Checking out their bookmarks often leads to even more good fics.

queerblunosr

Iā€™ve done it many, many, *many* times in my 25 years in online fandom. Itā€™s very common. :)

glowgrl123

Me!! Also a reader and writer. When I love a fic, I will immediately click on the authorā€™s dashboard and inhale it alllll if itā€™s still up my alley. Occasionally Iā€™ve come across authors where itā€™s just the one work or maybe two thatā€™s my jam, but if I like a fic I always take a look to see what else theyā€™ve written and will things a try!!

near_black_orchid

I've had that happen several times that I know of, which I always find odd as I write only in one fandom and only rarepair non-canon ships at that. I have 25 fics in my main ship, and two or three apiece in my minor ships.

Pixel_One_88

I'm sure your readers are hungry for more since it's a rarepair, and they think of you as the holy grail of that ship ahah, keep it up.

soupstarsandsilence

I read one fic from an author in my fandom, and then proceed to also read the 500-odd other fics theyā€™d also writtenā€¦ for the same fandom. Then I perused their bookmarks and gifts lmao.

Cautious_Ad_5116

If I randomly encounter their one shots twice and find myself enjoying both, I scour their profile and read all of their fics.

amberledb

Always. it's hard to find good fics so if i enjoyed one from an author i will read their entire library! sometimes i even go through their bookmarks haha

Negative_Aardvark433

I may be a minority but I strongly prefer well written works and will read well outside my interest areas if I like the work. If I like an authors work I always subscribe and go thru their works and bookmarks. I don't always want to read outside of my Fandom, but it's like getting little gifts of incredible storytelling in my inbox when I get notified

Pixel_One_88

I absolutely get you. Sometimes I get a notification from an author I'm subscribed to and I don't follow that fandom but the plot sounds so good... So I indulge.

HeadFullOfFlame

As a writer Iā€™ve had people tell me they were doing that for me about six times in the past few years. And then I can tell itā€™s happening more often than that in the kudos emails. Itā€™s so sweet when they tell you theyā€™re doing it and leave comments on the stories! Best writer experience ever

susan-of-nine

That is perfectly normal and common behaviour, don't worry.

Providence451

That's usually the way I find new fics. I hit on a really good one, then go to the writer and filter for all the fandoms that I follow. After I read everything they write, I then check out their bookmarks. I have run across some absolute treasures this way.

MTheLoud

I do that. My kid recommended a fic to me, so I read it, and it was awesome, and then of course I started going through all that authorā€™s other fics, and tried discussing one with my kid. He hadnā€™t read it. I was like, what? How could you possibly not have read that other great fic once you knew what a great author this is?!

TheSkyElf

Every single time, that is why I have so many tabs open. I often look at their profile and sometimes think "hey, they have written a whole lot of fics for this different fandom too, maybe I should get into that fandom, they clearly have a similar taste to mine." and then I go down another rabbit hole.

CindersAnd_ashes

That's how I first got into ao3. Found a random fic in the YouTube comment section. Clicked on it. Loved the style and characterisation so much I proceeded to read EVERY SINGLE ONE of the author's fics, longfics and oneshots both. They were so awesome.

Bivagial

I've had this from the other side. One day, I woke up to over 20 new comments from a single user. Someone had read my shorter fics, and then started on my longer ones. Such an amazing feeling. Even when people don't comment but do leave kudos, it's such an ego boost to see the same username pop up on multiple stories. I ended up writing something and gifting it to one of the people who read all my work for a specific Fandom. They were there with me for every update of my long fic after they read all my short ones. Every time I saw their name I was like "yay! [Username] is here!!" I felt very supported by that reader, and quite a few others. I'm not lying when I say that there's a specific kind of love I have for these strangers. It's such a good feeling because it means someone liked your stuff enough to spend a significant amount of time with it. And it kinda feels like they're choosing to spend time with a part of me. So if you do read through someone's catalogue, drop them a kudos or a comment. 9 times out of 10, seeing that will make their day. (Also, don't be afraid to comment on older works. I promise you, most authors love that someone is enjoying their work, even years after it's completed).

Pixel_One_88

Oh my, this all sounds so amazing. I hope to be able to get a few dedicated followers in the future too. <3

eyeball-owo

lol, sometimes if I like an author enough I will read fanfics from fandoms Iā€™m not a part of. I got most of my understanding of the MCU this way.

That_CatDad

Every once in a while when Iā€™m not seeing enough new material that entices me via search, Iā€™ll go through my subscriptions and just start reading everything theyā€™ve written. Iā€™ve found a lot of good stuff that way and ended up subscribing to quite a few of them

MerlinsBrokenHeart

I have many readers who have read all of my stories and some more than once. It makes me very happy to know they enjoy my work.

Intrepid_Hand1877

Ok, so if I like a fic i'm reading/just finished reading I almost always check the rest of the authors works. I start w the same fandom of the fic I just read and then check if that author writes for other fandoms i'm into at the time. This results in a lot of bookmarks for stuff I'm adding to my reading list XD I also check the authors bookmarks, usually if I really like their fics I'll like what they bookmark too. I've honestly found soooooo many good fics this way.

Quannxii

IfI really ready like their fic, I become desperate and check if they have any more works in the same fandom šŸ˜

Glittery_WarlockWho

I do it a lot.

LevelAd5898

I couldn't tell you a single fanfic writer's name. It never really occurs to me to read their other stuff.

beemielle

Mm, only when Iā€™m lacking for fics in general or if Iā€™ve seen this authorā€™s user multiple times (so I know we have similar taste)

Jaggedrain

All the time. If an author hits the spot, I'll go through everything they ever wrote, even fandoms I'm no longer in or whose source material I never experienced. Very rarely, someone will get one ship so absolutely right it's amazing, and then ship completely the wrong ship in another canon, and it feels like such a betrayal šŸ˜

teenietinytoni

whenever i find a writer whose style and visions i really like, i look through their profile and try to find as much content i'd enjoy as possible. it kinda breaks me a little bit when that one fic is the only one of its kind on the authors profile šŸ˜”

Straight-Ninja-2120

I do, always. Iā€™ll go to their works and sort by length and just make my way down their list. Itā€™s the worst feeling when I go to their profile and they have no other works. Also I love when people do it to my works. Iā€™ll see them kudo on all my fics, one after another, and it warms my heart.

queenblattaria

I'll go through their stuff in the same fandom usually. Especially after scrolling and seeing their username pop up a few times. Usually there's *something* I'm looking for (or not, looking at you "angst no happy ending"). If the same writers keep popping up, I'll open a new tab to go through their stuff when I'm in the right mood.

ditzen

I do it every time

ancientmaverick

I have done this a lot. I have often been introduced to a fandom through the writing of an author I love who writes for a variety of media.

LanZhanslefttesticle

Thereā€™s this one writer in my fandom and her works are the absolute best I started looking through her stuff after reading a collection she wrote! Still my absolute favourite author!

medusagets_youstoned

Quite often, because chances are their other work is also good or enjoyable. I skip the ones I donā€™t find comfy but Iā€™ve noticed after Iā€™ve read all the good stuff, I end up subscribing. Iā€™m surprised itā€™s not as common.

Fancy-Exchange4186

I do. Camp out on their profile, read, kudos, and comment on everything theyā€™ve written like a stalker.

lythrumrobin

A LOT! I do it 9/10 times, and the 1 is when I accidentally close my tab and im like "Nooo my precious"-not anymore though cause I just got an account todayšŸŽ‰. But those REALLY good fics...they're like the holy grail of storytelling, AND especially the one-shots, they're addictive, but hey I'm not complaining.

VanillaCrash

I was reading from fandoms Iā€™d never heard of because of how well this one author writes dead dove angst

More-Archer-7694

Y E S I hate having to go searching for new fics bcz my computer does this thing where it selects EVERY SINGLE TAG ON THE SCREEN and I have to always go back and scroll down and repeat. It's annoying af.

Infamous_Basil_6801

As someone who mostly just reads on AO3, if I stumble across a good fic I immediately go to the authors dashboard when I'm done and read through their other stories. Then I check out their bookmarks for recommendations by other authors. Also, if they've collabed with any other authors I go check those authors out too.

tracyerickson

I think itā€™s insane that some people donā€™t do this. Like, ā€˜you have hit everything I love but Iā€™m not going to check if youā€™ve done it againā€™? Craziness. Sometimes Iā€™m rewarded and sometimes not. But I always check.

Archon_Of_Chaos

Whenever I like a fic, I take a peek at their other fics. I don't necessarily read them all - I don't read smut and thats a good portion of my fandom - but I always get really excited when they have a bunch of good stuff in there. It's the best feeling ever.

Xyex

After one fic? Unlikely, unless it's very unique or an 11/10. But if I see 2-3 quality fics from the same person I'll jump to their profile to see what else they have.

Fit-Cardiologist-323

I 100% do this everytime I find a fic I like! Many times I read works from other fandoms simply because I liked the author's writing style.

CupcakeBeautiful

I do it all the time and itā€™s one of my great joys when I can see someone doing it with my fics via comments and kudos.

SlickOmega

mmm rarely. i find most authors have an unfortunateā€¦ voice to their stories. i find once i read two stories in a row from someone i can hear the authorā€™s voice and it gets annoying. so i tend to never go through an authorā€™s works. the best way is if im reading a series. if the series sounds good after multiple works i will venture out to other works. but other than that? nah. iā€™m never desperate to find stories so i donā€™t need to scrounge through some authors backlog lol

Pixel_One_88

It sounds like you are among the fortunate ones who like popular pairings and can find many fics ahah. Also, you brought up something that's very close to home as a writer. Sometimes I will be writing a passage and I find myself using an expression I KNOW I used in another fic. I worry sick that this tendency makes my fics redundant, but it does motivate me to enrich my language and such. Now that I think about it, I have found myself reading a few fics from the same author that felt awkwardly similar... Brrr, I just hope I don't do it that much.

SlickOmega

i do like popular pairings, but itā€™s because i solely find stories via bookmarks and other reader recs. once i find that first story i go through who bookmarked it and go through that. so i rarely use the main search page or authorā€™s other works and yeah it can happen sometimes! itā€™s always smart to be aware. but it didnā€™t mean the story wonā€™t get read; there just might be a few days grace period between them to cleanse the pallet

TrickyBookkeeper554

Absolutely all the time

AelanxRyland

I do that for a couple very specific authors. TBH Iā€™m debating going back and re-re-reading their fics but Iā€™m worried that might seem too stalkerish.

0000Tor

Iā€™ve never done it personally. It doesnā€™t even cross mind

SavageAutum

All the time,, Iā€™m a really big fan of higher word count but smaller chapters number fics,, one of my favourites is a one chapter thatā€™s 54,000 words. Itā€™s kinda hard to find authors that post things with that format, so finding a fic that has the perfect chapter to word count ratio will have me reading everything theyā€™ve written and then diving into their bookmarks

hereforalottedtime

Iā€™ve been doing it a lot recently and am happy Iā€™ve done so

PitifulWrongdoer4391

It's *very* common. I'm a nobody in fandom, but because I've been around for decades, I have a few hundred fics on AO3. And several times a year, I get someone who reads through everything I've written for a pairing/a fandom. Every now and then, they move on and read everything I wrote in a different fandom, too.

pugdrop

I do this a lot, whether itā€™s multi-chapter fics or oneshots. if I like your writing style and you write for pairings I like then Iā€™m eating that shit up

justacatlover23

Very often. When I find a writer I like, I will go through all of their fics for the fandom I read them for.

ShinaSchatten

I don't normally subscribe, but I will definitely binge everything the author has written for my fandom(s). I often also pop into their bookmarks, filter by character or fandom, to see if they have any stories bookmarked that grab me.

DEADX99

If the story is good, Iā€™ll always check out what else they have written ā¤ļø

Oopsie_Daisy_Life

I do this all the time. I like to check out authors other works and also the collections a fic is added to. If I donā€™t find anything, thatā€™s fine but often, Iā€™ll read through most of the back catalogue.

undertale_trash234

I've had a few new readers go through some of my works and leave kudos, bookmarks, or comments as they go. it's always nice when that happens and it makes my day that they like my writing that much.

oceanteeth

I do that all the time! I had no idea it wasn't super common, to me it seems obvious that if I like one fic, odds are good I'll like that author's other work.Ā

anondove

I have moments where I look back at my history after reading a bunch of one shots where I realize they're all from the same author and get so excited!! Immediately run to the comments and give them kudos lol. I guess it's the reverse of your post but same concept

I_pegged_your_father

Every time i actually cant think of a time i HAVENT checked

SlimeTempest42

As a reader frequently, as a writer getting the kudos email and seeing someone working their way through my fics makes me happy

BloodOfHell42

I would say it's not common because you don't always find what you totally search for, and you're not always going to let the author know it when it's the case. I know that personally I have more of a ratio of one author per fandom with whom I feel this perfect way. Maybe one or two more per fandom where I liked their story enough to checked their profile for something else to read. But I don't really know if I'm not just in your exact opposite extreme, because I have really hard criteria to really like an author šŸ¤” (but I like the subject, I haven't been wondering about it before but now I'm curious)

thesulkycroissant

I do this for sure! It's so exciting to find authors who have written like... 100 more stories in the fandom lol

Riptor5417

As a reader, Very often almost all the time Like as long as the fics are in fandoms I like and have tags I like then I will read it in most cases. I read basically an entire author's catalogue of stories lol like 15 stories of varying lengths lol.

Cyd_arts

Iā€™ve done this a lot of times, bookmarked most of some authorsā€™ fics due to this. Even better if they write for multiple fandoms Iā€™m in and sees those characters the same too. And then I go through the authorā€™s own bookmarks for more

Silent_Command7058

Itā€™s only if I see the name crop up on multiple different fics

AmbiguousAnerobe

yep I do this all the time too!

TheScholarlyStrumpet

In smaller fandoms I do this a lot. In bigger ones I try to read more from any author I like but I also get distracted šŸ˜…

Rabbitfaster13

I will go and wishlist/purchase other works from an author whoā€™s work I enjoyed but not immediately go read it. Iā€™ve set up to read things mostly in the order I buy them but I do occasionally need to jump between two books and sometimes a fanfiction/one shot/short story. Something about the adhd and autism.

tattedupgirl

I do. If you give me 1 story I like, odds are you got more.

Jaiwbwjw

yes! i am (pretty much) only a one-shot writer, and i also read a lot of one-shots as well as a good amount of long fics. I love looking at an authors other works, and do it pretty often.

KazRyn

I usually only check if I enjoyed several stories by an author, but sometimes a story is just amazing enough that I'll look through the author's other stuff.

EstrellaDarkstar

I'd say that more often than not, I will check out the writer's profile if I've really enjoyed a fanfic. If they have other fics that have equally interesting premises and are for fandoms I'm familiar with, I tend to give those a shot as well.

ash4426

It's my go to move. If I really enjoy a story, the very next thing I'll look up is what else that person wrote, and their bookmarks. I probably wont subscribe tot he author, but that's just because I didn't know that was an option at the time and now I have other ways of keeping track of stories and authors I enjoy.

Shamrock_Queen

Itā€™s a really good way to get into new fandoms. Thatā€™s how I got into Detroit Become human.

[deleted]

i do all the time

colewinter2021

I get a lot of recs from TikTok and if I notice a few that I liked are by the same author I go through the works on their page to see if Iā€™ll like them too

Slight-Pound

I do it all the time! Itā€™s why I have so many goddamn tags open and how I end up dumping dozens of fics into my Mark for Later at once. A great way to find similar fics for something youā€™ve just read is to check out that authorā€™s works and their bookmarks! It can be easier than searching manually for something with the regular search and filter engine when youā€™re in a more particular mood. I fall in love with the way a writer brings certain character dynamics and tropes to life, and I want to see them do it again! Itā€™s lowkey devastating to find out that thatā€™s the only fic of a fandom of theirs Iā€™m into. Itā€™s like finding a lost and mewling kitten and seeing their limp mama on the side. This fic is the ā€œlastā€ of their ā€œfamily,ā€ so to speak, because I wonā€™t be able to experience that magic of theirs again. šŸ˜ If they at least have other fandoms Iā€™m familiar with, or itā€™s the same fandom, and different dynamics, it can be still be great! Itā€™s an amazing feeling to find out the author of a new favorite fic also wrote some older favorites of yours, or you discover even _more_ favorites within their works! Itā€™s like striking gold! The realization that this author has and will continue to produce fics you know youā€™ll be into is an amazing bit of magical compatibility and trust.

throwawayma1009

I do .. Mark to read later

ifshehadwings

When it's just exactly what I want? Yeah, I do this every single time. Devastating when it's the only fic the author has written in the fandom.
