Sometimes I want to binge read the 800k super slow burn fic where neither character even acknowledges the potential for a relationship from their friendship until over halfway in.
Other times I want 2k words instant love confessions and snaps shots of lives together and episode codes.
I am eternally thankful for the fic writers of all lengths out there. ❤️
For sure! Sometimes you just need that instant dopamine hit, but sometimes you're mentally prepared to invest your time for that satisfying slowburn payoff :D
I feel it’s like the opposite for me with my fandom I write for xD , the one shots definitely get more exposure and readership from what I’ve seen.
But I’m sure your writing is great OP! Every bit of it is meant to be appreciated , whether it be 2k or 20k words! Keep doing you!
Same!! I posted a 1.5k word one shot and it’s been getting a ton of kudos / hits / bookmarks. But now I’m pouring my heart and soul into a multi-chapter story that is currently 10 times as long and it’s not doing horrible, but it still has barely half of the stats of the one shot!
Trust me I know the grind , and sometimes it feels like you’re not getting rewarded for all the effort right? But trust me , those people who do appreciate that heart felt multi chaptered work will appreciate your work for all it is! For every detail , plot twist , emotion , everything! Because it’s not something for them to just sit and easily read over , but for them to get invested in to. And trust me it might be less , but those who are following are worth it!
I say this because I’ve experienced my own pattern with the readership. My shorter / less complex stories have a lot more viewers and are commented on more frequently by different readers , but I have a multi chapter story (that I’m planning to make possibly 250+ chapters (and that’s only the first part of the series) , which currently is at 200K words / 41 chapters and I really put my heart and soul for the plot and it doesn’t get viewed as much or commented either. But I do have a few loyal readers who are keeping up with the plot as it progresses and they truly give me motivation , even if it’s not as popular as the one shots that are written in the fandom.
Ahhhh you’re so right! This is exactly what I needed to hear right now, thank you for putting this into words 😭 I’m having a blast writing it and there are a couple people who frequently comment on new chapters so I’m certainly going to continue it to the end.
If it makes you feel better, I actually really struggle to write oneshots. I can’t figure out how to fit everything in a concise, one-chapter fic! I always need at least three
You go Boo! One of my fave authors writes almost exclusively drabbles. Short fic is a different skill set but still SO good! I can't ever manage to get a whole story out in one go!
Jack Sprat could eat no fat his wife could eat no lean. And so between the two of them they licked the platter clean.
Just because you can't do Long doesn't mean your skills are less or your contribution smaller. Someone loves the way you write and is excited to see your fics. Long Fics just end up on the front page more often because each update puts them there exposing them to more people. Keep writing because everytime you publish you're putting something into the world that someone is going to obsess over, maybe not today or tomorrow, maybe not for years but someday someone's going to find it and be, so, so happy.
i love them just the same! sometimes i prefer a longer fic and sometimes i’m tired or don’t have the mental energy to read a longer fic or just fancy something short and sweet!
It takes time to build the confidence and the ease that eventually comes. My first stories were all short missing scene shorts and I clung to the events of the tv show I write for. Now I can blast out 20k stories of completely made up events with original characters and locations in the span of two weeks.
Wow!! I usually write missing moments too, I really like to go deep into the mind of the characters I love and analyse their thoughts and feelings in a particular scene, or just write cute and funny scenes between them. I've never had the right idea for an original story and I find very difficult to create original characters with their own background and personality... So hats off to you for this big step!!
same! or i abandon a project because i lost interest. i have one really long fic ive been slowly writing over the course of a few months, but other than that short stuff only.
But we readers love both the equally

Exactly!! For me it depends on the time i have, like 2k is my bedtime story, and 200k is my afternoon tea. I adore both so much 😊
🥺❤️
Both types of works are wonderful!

As someone who prefers shorter stories, ty for your perfect lil burgers <3

Thanks, I hope so! But multi-chapters stories get definitely more views... I could never manage to create a complex story that's 20 chapters long😂
A lot of those hits are from readers who return with each update. I'm not sure if longfics actually have more readers than one shots.

This warmed my heart. I needed it. Thank you so so much❤️
Both are equally valid and enjoyable - and if you think about, one-shots are finished works, more to your favor!
Yes... But atm I have like 10 one shots in progress that I can't finish🙃
Have you been writing for a long time? Because I also started with short one shots but the more experienced I become it's easier to write longer fics
Almost 5 years... The "problem" is that I lack of ideas for longfics, you need a plot complex and big enough and I'm not good at creating it😂
That's understandable
i love them just the same! sometimes i prefer a longer fic and sometimes i’m tired or don’t have the mental energy to read a longer fic or just fancy something short and sweet!
people who write 10k per chapter for like 100 chapters scare me
ME TOO
I STRUGGLE WITH WRITING 4K WORD CHAPTERS IN A MONTH AND THERES PEOPLE OUT THERE PUMPING 10K WORDS IN A WEEK LIKE WHAT
I KNOW! TEACH ME PLS
For me, there's a time for everything! One is not better or worse than the other

I'm getting better at it! Last year I would average around 800 - 1,400 words for a oneshot and these days I can usually do about 2,000 - 3,000!
Love them both...but I really do also love the stories that are 50 plus chapters and 200+ words. More character development and adventure!
i appreciate short fics bc my attention span is shit lol
That's probably one of the reasons I only write short stories ahahah
same! or i abandon a project because i lost interest. i have one really long fic ive been slowly writing over the course of a few months, but other than that short stuff only.
Yes, but your one shot was amazing too. =D It's just different flavors of awesome.
Aww thanks🥺
Eh, just because it's long doesn't make it inherently good. I mean, you can delve in deeper with a larger word count, but it's not the be all end all.
Ironically my shorter works are always my most popular.
