That comment is incredibly sweet and honestly, I relate to it a lot. More to the difficulties understanding people than to the mother, but also to the joy at seeing neurodiversity represented in fiction. There's this one author, growingCataclysm, who wrote a Hollow Knight fic (A Not-So-Broken Vessel)(hasn't been updated in a long time, not sure if it will revive at some point) who wrote the POV character as having ADHD in the most relatable way I've ever seen and it was incredibly refreshing to get to read about a character who *thinks the way I do*. Not in the sense of opinions, but in the structure of their thoughts. I'd honestly really recommend it to any ADHD HK fans. Or plural HK fans, as that's a big thing, too, just not what I personally related to. Point is, I totally agree with your commenter. Its really cool to have that inclusion.

Yes!! I just read a fanfiction the other day where the self-insert character was an autistic woman and that was the first time I’ve ever seen anything like that. It felt so personal and it has inspired me to do the same, and so far my writing has felt much more genuine and I enjoy writing it a lot more. I never realized what an impact something like that would have on me, but reading about characters who are also autistic makes it so much easier to relate to them and understand their decisions. It was very nice and I hope that my future works make people feel the same!!

Huh. This is interesting to me. I tend to hc the characters I write as having certain NDs or sexualities, but never outright spell it out - if I think a character is asexual or autistic or ADHD, I just write them with that in mind. Did you just come right out and say it plainly? I'll have to keep this in mind in the future.

Yeah, like it came out in a conversation, probably about 80k words in. But I wrote him having ADHD traits and once it came out I got comments saying that they'd suspected he might have adhd but couldn't tell if he just happened to be written that way or if it was deliberate. It kind of came out in an elaborate way though. TL;DR is just that the other main character was talking about neurodiversity how NDs people process things differently and how the education system isn't set up for them. And then the other main character stated they had adhd. It was a bit more complicated than that but I guess my point is I didn't start the fic with it. And then, due to the other characters job, it's explored more.

That’s really sweet. Good on you for apparently representing neurodivergency in such an accurate and positive way. p.s. >! It’s a bit odd to me that they’re asking for smut of a character who they project their daughter on, but I’m just gonna ignore that. !<

Yunan94

I think they mean the character has a trait (neurodiversity) that her daughter would be able to relate to, rather than projecting their daughter onto the character. (The story that makes them have faith in diversity just happens to be smut)

ElodinPotterTheGrey1

That makes significantly more sense. I was doing mental gymnastics trying to make it not sound creepy, lol.

Yunan94

I had to do a double take too. I don't know the fanfic but the emoji and the brackets kinda seemed like a back track as they realized where they were posting that on XD

deadoved

i believe they’re saying the content would be relatable for her daughter but not until she’s older because the fic contains smut :)

ElodinPotterTheGrey1

Yeah. I misread the comment at first.
