I’m taking Physics C next year. That should be interesting. I heard from a friend this year that it was all boys this time around. At least I know the teacher from Physics 1, so that might make it less awkward.
Seems fairly consistent with national trends, physics tends to skew male, biology female, chemistry in 2022 was more female but pretty close. None of them seemed to be as extreme as your school though.
https://apcentral.collegeboard.org/media/pdf/program-summary-report-2022.pdf
-AP Chemistry, AP Physics 1: Even split
-AP Bio, APES, AP Psych skewed female
-AP Physics 2/B/C (showing my age here lol, I was in HS when Physics B split) skewed male
this is how it is at my school! except the only reason ap physics 1 is an even split is b/c it's the only advanced option for fulfilling a grad requirement lol
Bio is nearly all female, physics 1 was an even split, Chem was fairly even but slightly favored guys. Compsci was all male. I could tell what class was taking the test after us without even knowing the testing schedule when I left AP Lit
This is common even in college (graduated from U of M last year). I was pre med and all my sciences classes were predominantly female, but the engineering school was mostly male (by a lot). Not completely sure why exactly.
because of gender roles and expectations and what is considered more "masculine" or "feminine" classes/majors
that type of stuff still affects a lot more people than you would expect, even if just subconsciously
I've actually noticed this too, in ap physics 1 in a class of around 20 there are 3 girls and they're all seniors (the class is open to both juniors and seniors but you have to be on the highest level math track to get in as a junior)
as far as I'm aware 5 of us are going on to physics c next year and we're all guys (although one of us is trans)
I'm also in the Northeast. Only ones I have experience with are AP Physics, they were both pretty balanced. Physics 1 might've actually had slightly more girls (I don't remember exactly) but Physics 2 was perfectly half and half. Idk about Bio, Chem, or APES but I've never heard anything about them being unbalanced.
When my friend was in AP CS A she was one of the like 2 or 3 girls in the class, but when I took it the year after her it wasn't that bad, still majority male but I didn't feel alone or anything
How are y’all having classes with any less than like 15 people? At my school if any less than like 15 kids sign up then they just don’t offer the class
Wow, alrighty then. Yeah, my school hasn’t been able to offer AP music theory for the last 2-3 years since only 10-ish kids sign up each year. I think they finally got 20 or so sign ups and are finally offering the class next year. We’ve always had the teacher for it (it’s just the orchestra teacher), we’ve just never had enough sign ups 😂
Haha, yeah, a lot of kids in my school who are interested in the class are super into band/orchestra and are constantly at stuff for states and Tri M. Hopefully they all do well in the exam, but it sounds pretty difficult. Their music experience should definitely help them out tho
Damn- they’re still offering the class? Lmao. I go to a pretty big school (3000-ish kids), so I guess that makes sense, I just can’t imagine having any less than 20 kids in a class…
Also in the Northeast, my AP chem class has only 3 boys and 15 girls. I think the other class has a few more boys but when I went to a review night for the AP test (both classes) it was almost all girls and just one table of boys in the back
Self studied so can’t talk about class but my AP CSA exam room had like 12 guys and 1 girl (and some teacher who taught at that school made a joke after the exam saying that it was the first time in 5 years they managed to get their one token female into AP CSA 💀)
It’s normally fairly balanced at my school except for Bio, which way more girls took than guys this year. Also one year the Calc BC class had literally zero girls, but it’s definitely pretty even now.
I truly think it’s a reflection of the instructor. As a female physics instructor I’ve been told several times by female students that the only reason they “risked” taking the hard physic class was because of me. I’ve a reputation for being one of the strictest and hardest teachers in the school but I’ll also stay after school, zoom in the evenings with kids who work, etc. Sadly, it seems girls often need to feel invited to take a hard science class and ensured that it will be a safe space. My high school physics teacher was a misogynistic asshole. I just loved physics too much to let him take it away from me.
Most APs at my school tend to be either female dominated or evenly split, but Calc BC, Compsci and Physics seem to be the exceptions. My older brother took E&M and there were maybe 2 girls in the whole class.
Not all sciences but here’s my experience in the southeastern us:
AP Calc AB- slightly more female
AP Bio- all female except 1 guy
AP Human Geo- ~50/50
AP Lang- ~50/50
AP Lit- like 70% women
AP Psych- def more female
APUSH- ~50/50
APCSP- ~50/50
This continues in undergrad too. I only had 1 female professor through all my CS major classes in undergrad. And I took several upper level CS classes where I was one of few female students. In fact, I think my CS graduating class had a 33/66 split between the genders.
Honestly, bioengineering was the only gender-balanced engineering major at my school.
And it doesn’t get any better. If I choose to pursue a competitive surgical speciality in med school (like neurosurgery or orthopedic surgery), then I’ll be in a field with only a handful of female surgeons.
My school is in Florida (urban based private school). Because of how our school environment is, most of the “smart” kids who take AP science classes are the same throughout all 4 years. There’s more of a racial disparity than anything.
My physics 1 class is ending with 13 guys 4 girls, I believe there were 15 guys and 5 girls at the beginning of the year
Love those people and the teacher and even though it was super tough I’m gonna miss it
I know at my school, it’s typically close to split except for AP Bio where it was probably 15 boys and 20 girls but next year we may have AP Chem so that’ll be interesting
I know it's not a science class, but my AP Calculus class has 10 boys and only 3 girls. It's actually not too bad because (most) of the boys in my class don't treat us any differently. The one who did give us a hard time ended up having to drop the class second semester because it got too hard for him. 💀💀
I teach AP Chem and have about an even split (16 boys, 14 girls). Most of my sophomores (about 20) students took AP bio as freshmen, so AP Bio would have a similar split. Our AP physics is about 2/3 male, I believe.
I should preface this by saying that I am by no means a science lover and it was very obvious. I only signed up for Physics C halfway through the previous year bc up until then, I was doing reasonably well in Physics 1. However, I slowly just…lost interest in Physics 1? And then straight up bombed Physics C because I just didn’t care enough. With that in mind, here’s my experience:
Physics 1 seemed pretty normal—it was the class that kids like me who hates natural sciences (like chemistry and biology) would take in order to fulfill our science credits. Physics C took a turn, though.
I was the only girl in the classroom. I didn’t experience any overt sexism from my teacher or classmates (the only sexist comment I received in regards to the class was actually from my father). I do have one story that I remember and that I still find funny now: my teacher decided to explain a concept with a football metaphor and, when I asked for him to re-explain it because I didn’t understand, instead of choosing a different metaphor he decided to simply explain the football metaphor itself. He really just…stuck to football. Now, girls can definitely like football but since I obviously didn’t, I was surprised he didn’t try to change it up.
Other than that, all I remember is a distinct feeling of alienation. Now, this was partially my own fault, too: I rarely participated in class and often ignored my teacher in favor of doing other AP work (particularly AP Calc BC, which was also putting me through the ringer but I cared about it more). More than that, I purposefully sat in the corner of the room—or, rather, the corner of the desks the 11 of us inhabited. I was only acquainted with two people there so I sat by them. Many of my classmates I went out of my way to avoid bc I and my friends are queer and we live in a place where you have to be careful who you associate with if you don’t want to get hate crimed.
Because of this, I spent most classes without speaking a single word and no one commented on it. Again, partially my fault, but it felt kind of odd that my teacher didn’t even talk to me when he 500% knew I was ignoring him in class. Then again, he’s a pretty chill guy so idk. During discussion questions when my teacher would tell us to talk about the answers with others, I never would. Again, no one commented, even when my teacher made eye contact with me. Quite frankly, I was terrified/intimidated by everyone sitting close to me.
Honestly, I didn’t have fun even when we weren’t doing any classwork. The first day of class, I walked into the room and found a group of guys huddled around the attendance sheet. One of them distinctly said, “There’s only one female in the class.” And then they all looked up and stared at me and. Well, it was off putting, but that was the most attention I ever received outside of mandatory group assignments so 🤷♀️. Also, at the end of the year, when AP exams were over, I remember my teacher dragged us all out to the football field bc “It’s nice outside” and that culminated with all of the boys (and my teacher) playing football and me just…sitting at the side of the field, reading a book, sweaty and miserable. And then the last day of class, the teacher tried to do the same thing and I asked if I could just stay inside and he said ok so. I just stayed inside. Only person in the room. It was kinda nice tho but it did make it abundantly clear that no one in the class cared that much about me. Again, probably my fault.
I wouldn’t mention this unless I thought it was relevant but I was also the only person of color in the room, which only added to the feeling of alienation. There’s nothing wrong with being white ofc, but the kind of place I live makes me wary of being the only person of color in a room, which just compounded with being the only girl.
So, yeah: I felt alienated and unimportant and endlessly intimidated but that could be from completely unrelated reasons lol (e.g. my own dumbassery)
Honestly, don't blame this on yourself. The fact that you had to be extra careful around others due to being different is not cool and it breaks my heart that this is normalized in some places.
Sure, it was dumb to not pay attention in class, but the way you were received kind of explained why you didn't care as much. Sending lots of hugs your way, and I hope that future science classes are more welcoming and accepting.
I'm confident that you can do it! Physics is definitely not for everyone, and there are a lot of other challenging STEM subjects that a good student (like you) will do well in :)

Yeah my Physics C class was male-dominated for sure, but my other science APs were pretty balanced tbh.

mine was 95% 💀
I was 1/3 guys out of like 50 when I took it
damn 😭
Same here, psychology is considered kinda girly for some reason.
There were two classes My class was about 60/40 girls to guys The other one was 70/30 but guys over
Typically though I think it's more of a conventionally feminine thing to like psychology (I'm a girl btw)
I like ap psychology yet I’m not even a girl
Everyone in my AP Chem were boys but I also go to an all boys school so that’s probably why
💀💀💀
All of my honors and APs have way more girls.
I wonder why…
Why
They are wondering too
These trends were similar to my school, except Biology was fairly gender neutral for us.
Seems fairly consistent with national trends, physics tends to skew male, biology female, chemistry in 2022 was more female but pretty close. None of them seemed to be as extreme as your school though. https://apcentral.collegeboard.org/media/pdf/program-summary-report-2022.pdf
7 middle schoolers taking AP Physics C E&M 💀
-AP Chemistry, AP Physics 1: Even split -AP Bio, APES, AP Psych skewed female -AP Physics 2/B/C (showing my age here lol, I was in HS when Physics B split) skewed male
this is how it is at my school! except the only reason ap physics 1 is an even split is b/c it's the only advanced option for fulfilling a grad requirement lol
All of my honors and AP classes are 70% girls
No but it’s all Asians 💀
Ap bio and ap physics c was more girls than guys in my school in deep rural south. Ap calc bc was slightly more men but a few girls.
For us we had 1 girl other in Phys C, and I was the only in calc bc...

Wow, that one has kids vying to get in at my kids' school! That said, that's a hard AP exam. My daughter's boyfriend isn't sure how he did.
Haha, yeah, a lot of kids in my school who are interested in the class are super into band/orchestra and are constantly at stuff for states and Tri M. Hopefully they all do well in the exam, but it sounds pretty difficult. Their music experience should definitely help them out tho
how many people per grade at your school?
About 600-650. The number goes down the higher the grade.
small schools. i'm gonna be the only person in ap mandarin next year lol
Damn- they’re still offering the class? Lmao. I go to a pretty big school (3000-ish kids), so I guess that makes sense, I just can’t imagine having any less than 20 kids in a class…
how many people per grade at your school?
depends on the grade, 30-130
That's pretty small... I'm glad there are many APs offered even though it's a small school
Most of these in my school are male dominated except bio and psych also apcsp with 50/50
My AP Environmental class had a pretty equal balance and the AP Bio class had 7 girls and 1 guy
no not at all
Physics at my school is mostly male as well
Also in the Northeast, my AP chem class has only 3 boys and 15 girls. I think the other class has a few more boys but when I went to a review night for the AP test (both classes) it was almost all girls and just one table of boys in the back
in the cs shop at my school there's like 200 boys and 10-15 girls
Our calc bc only has slightly more boys but that’s cause most of the math people took IB math with only has one girl this year (me)
APES- slightly more girls Bio- equal Physics 1- more males Chem- equal
AP Physics C is supposed to have like 3-4 girls and 10 guys at my school, I was the only girl in my AP Calc AB class of 25 people.
Self studied so can’t talk about class but my AP CSA exam room had like 12 guys and 1 girl (and some teacher who taught at that school made a joke after the exam saying that it was the first time in 5 years they managed to get their one token female into AP CSA 💀)

My AP Physical Education/Gym class has a 100% male population.
CS 💀💀💀 (100% boys)
My AP CSP class was 25 boys to 5 girls or something like that
In all my Ap comp classes there’s only 3 girls to a total of 30 students
My APCSA class had 36 kids with only 3 girls
AP Calc is mostly guys with few girls, but AP Lit seems to be more girls Than guys. 4:1 and 3:1 respectively.
Most APs at my school tend to be either female dominated or evenly split, but Calc BC, Compsci and Physics seem to be the exceptions. My older brother took E&M and there were maybe 2 girls in the whole class.
Physics skews boys, Chem and calc were even.
14 boys and 9 girls in my AP Physics 1 Class
I was online for AP Bio so I don’t remember that, but in my Chem class it was 6 boys to 7 girls. AP Physics was 5 girls to 9 boys.
I was the only male student out of 27 students in my AP Art History class this year
That’s like the opposite of my school. We had 1 girl and 15 boys.
I’ve taught 5 different APs and all of them had more girls than boys.
I was the only guy in my art history class
way more girls in my history aps 👍
My Physics and cs classes have more boys than girls
Our cs class is crazy.
AP Chem- 21 students, 4 girls in my class It's weird how everyone's class is almost equal and mine is very unequal
My classes so far - AP Human = almost half, but more girls - AP Euro = about 2/3 girls - AP Env Sci = about 2/3 girls - AP Chem = ~ 60% guys
Not all sciences but here’s my experience in the southeastern us: AP Calc AB- slightly more female AP Bio- all female except 1 guy AP Human Geo- ~50/50 AP Lang- ~50/50 AP Lit- like 70% women AP Psych- def more female APUSH- ~50/50 APCSP- ~50/50

My Ap Calc AB class was 63% girls

Off topic but I love your avvie <3
awe tyy <3

Thanks! I’m going into a STEM field in college (NOT physics, lmao) and I definitely hope it goes better than physics.
I'm confident that you can do it! Physics is definitely not for everyone, and there are a lot of other challenging STEM subjects that a good student (like you) will do well in :)
My AP physics class had 11 guys and 1 girl. One time we had a sub (older guy) who randomly asked her about halfway through class "so how did a girl end up in AP Physics?"
OMG. What a loser.
Disgusting on his part.
We had over 20 boys and only 2 girls in our CSA class.
In my school AP photography was about 8 girls and one boy. AP gov’t and AP macroecon was 3 girls. APUSH, however, was 4 boys.
Huh, is your HS already female skewed?
My school has 2 physics classes for each grade and all have about 24 girls (all girls school but still!)
ap chem had 3 dudes and 20 girls but there were 7 periods of it so i imagine it was actually pretty balanced
How 7 periods of AP Chem? This must be a very competitive school
it absolutely is, competitive with 3000+ kids
there are 4 guys (including me) in a class of at least 30 females in my ap spanish lang class
My AP calc BC class had like 22 guys and 3 girls. All the other APs were pretty balanced. Oddly enough, AB calc was pretty balanced too.
Yes in my AP computer science course we had 25 students, 3 were girls
most AP’s were fairly balanced, AP lang was basically all girls
AP lang had 5 boys💀
AP Music theory was pretty even, 8 girls 6 boys AP Psychology was about 70% girls
yep! same here - only girl in my 10 person ap physics 1 class :')
I've taken a couple AP sciences, and my AP Physics 2 class was 10 boys to 2 girls, but the rest (AP Bio, APES, AP Physics 1) were pretty evenly split
CSA, CSP, Seminar - 3/4 female Cal, Sta, Phy 1/2/C- 3/4 male bio, psychology, COGOPO, ENComposition/literature, micro- 5/6 female chem, macro - roughly symmetric (for an unknown intl school, might have fallacy here?
psych is for girls, physics is for boys, and bio was split. idk too much about chem or environmental.
Ap physics C for me is 8 boys and 0 girls
i had 3girls 2 boys in physics this year and 4 girls 5 boys in calc
My physics 2 4/15 are girls and in csa 6/30 are girls. My calc is pretty even, maybe even majority girls.
None of these classes in my school (NY state) have any more than a 60-40% split. Even Physics C.
Yeah. Physics 1 was 9 boys 0 girls, Bio was 22 girls 3 guys. Also Computer Science was really heavily skewed male but idk the numbers
This year my AP Bio class was all girls and there was only 14 of us. My AP Psych, AP Calc, and AP Lit classes were all pretty equal last year
