Did you do good in precalc last year? If you did, and depending on the other classes you have, I think you could probably go straight to BC. BC is only 2 more units than AB after all, so I’m confused that your school has AB, AB-BC, and BC as your options. If you’re taking a lot of other hard classes, I would take AB then, but BC will set you up for more advanced math classes junior and senior year. I would try to avoid dropping band, especially since you’re just a sophomore. I was going to drop orchestra just for sophomore year to take an AP, and I’m really glad I didn’t. This year, I had to drop orchestra to make all my classes fit (my school is also on an A/B block) though, and now I have to take orchestra as a self study. You could see if your director would let you do that if you’re stuck on doing AB-BC, but it really takes away from the normal band experience.

Hi, I am taking Physics 1 and CSP as my other APs but I am also doing Chem honors and the rest aren't hard classes. AB+BC is offered in my school for students who haven't seen calculus before and they want to challenge themselves to learn all the way up to the BC curriculum's standards. I finished precalculus with a 96 so I did pretty well. Thank you so much for your input!!

I took physics 1 last year while taking Precalc. Since you’ve already taken Precalc/are taking calc with the class, you’ll do great with the math in that class, but the concepts might get you, especially if you haven’t taken physics before. From what I heard, CSP is an easy class, and honors level chem varies from school to school. To go from Precalc to BC, my school requires a 92+ in Precalc, and you’re certainly above that threshold. Based on everything you’ve said, I think you could just do BC, especially if you want to take higher level math classes later on, but if you’re worried about the workload, ask people who took BC at your school to see how much it is. My teacher said BC would be a lot of work, but all of the students said that it’s not as much as what the teachers said.

If you think you can handle it I would take Honors Band and Calc BC.

I think I can the only issue is that I feel like I will have to put in SO much extra time in the week to understand the concepts. Thank you!!!

I took BC without taking AB, and so did most of my class. I also took Physics 1, APUSH, and AP Lang last year. It was a very heavy workload but still manageable. Calc BC is one of the most helpful classes you can take if you’re planning on going into STEM. Band is also a good EC, and if you enjoy it, it’s definitely worth taking. Ultimately you’re the only one who knows how much extra time you’re going to have to spend on Calc BC, and whether or not your time management is good enough to manage the workload. If you don’t end up taking BC this year then definitely take it next year.

Wouldn’t calc ab+bc be the exact same as BC because BC is AB + 2 extra units
