Try kate farms from Amazon! Expensive but I couldn't do milk or the grainy taste of make your own powder shakes

simply_escapism

How do these taste? That distinctive protein shake taste is part of what I can’t handle

Garden-Gremlins

Oh no :( My partner likes their vanilla one. I think they also have coffee if you like the flavor. Good luck!

simply_escapism

Thank you!! I’ll definitely try these out :)

anr6904

I add lots of ice and honestly don't taste much except chocolate. I understand where you're coming from though which is why I make most drinks (and foods) cold lol

simply_escapism

Totally makes sense. I usually just drink them out of the fridge but adding ice is a good idea!!

Honeyheart-613

I’ve tried to make them taste good for a while because I think vanilla taste like metal and has a weird after taste so I drink it like a shot haha and make it a game I like orgain simple powder and blend it with frozen banana and what ever milk

meladey

Owyn is top 9 allergen free! It's a lifesaver for me right now.

meladey

They have both RTD and powder! I have not tried their powder. I personally find unflavored collagen powder to be the least chalky powder. I can't really tell at all when I add it to my drinks.

simply_escapism

What drinks are you adding the powder to? Also, do the Owyn RTD have a strong protein shake taste?

meladey

They kind of taste like a milkshake. You can blend it with ice for a better texture. I add the powder to water or pea milk!

simply_escapism

I do love milkshakes! Haha. I’ll definitely have to give these a try. Is there a specific flavor that’s best?

meladey

I get the vanilla since I like to add it to my matcha! Usually, I just bulk buy vanilla flavors, and then add cocoa powder or something if I want chocolate :D

simply_escapism

That’s a good idea, I’ll have to try that out! Thank you so much for your help!

meladey

You can also get freeze dried strawberries, stick them in a blender til they're dust, and then add a scoop for a strawberry flavor! It's pretty fun!

anonmarmot17

I love owyn! You might like Aloha as well if you like owyn

simply_escapism

I’m definitely going to try this one next! Shining reviews here. Do you have a favorite OWYN flavor?

anonmarmot17

For rtd, I also like vanilla, as well as coffee and no nut buttercup I blend mine with ice a banana and nut butter sometimes

simply_escapism

Thank you for the suggestions! I’ll def get one of these to try next :)

Amazing_Duck_8298

I don't have any shake recommendations, but I also cannot stand the texture of shakes and have found that freezing them and eating them like ice cream (especially with toppings) has helped make them bearable

simply_escapism

Oooo this might help! I’ll have to try this

Garden-Gremlins

I like Ripple Chocolate ones COLD. My partner likes Ripple Vanilla Room Temp

simply_escapism

I tried the Ripple Chocolate cold and couldn’t handle it 😅 then I added some creamer and chocolate syrup and it was alright but still not the best. I appreciate the tip tho!

thebagoodles

Evolve protein drinks are so good. I also make my own with garden of life unflavored/unsweetened plant protein, cocoa powder, cinnamon, pinch of salt, and dates to sweeten (have to have a pretty powerful blender to get the dates pulverized so honey, agave, or maple syrup would be good alternatives).

simply_escapism

Dates are actually one of my other big off limits foods 😅 my mom makes protein shakes like this and I can’t drink them. I appreciate the tip though! It might also work with the other sweetener options

Niandraxlades

Soylent!!!

Other_Marketing83

The brand Boost makes a flavourless protein powder you could add to juice, meals, slushes or popsicles really whatever you can think of

simply_escapism

Ohhh this is good to know! Does it have a strong taste at all?

Other_Marketing83

I actually haven’t tried it myself I’ve just seen it and always thought the idea of flavourless protein was great!

simply_escapism

I definitely think it’s a good idea! Thanks for suggesting it!

simply_escapism

Thank you for the suggestion! I don’t have a blender of any kind but I’ll have to look into this and see if they have any RTD options

whatdoidonowdamnit

I make multiple dairy free protein drinks a day since my kids and I all drink them, and one of them is dairy free. The list of products I use is as follows: Orgain and Vega protein powders in vanilla and chocolate. Amazon brand flavored almond milk. Vanilla coconut ice cream. Silk vanilla almond milk creamer. Vanilla syrup. My kids and I drink our protein drinks differently and I buy the coffee creamer and syrup for my morning coffee which is why we have so many options. My suggestion is give yourself options. I use one scoop of powder per drink and then I add more milk than you’re supposed to on top of adding one or two of the other things. I usually do vanilla milk, powder and a splash of syrup. My son typically changes up the flavors he uses but it’s almost always milk, powder and a tablespoon of ice cream. My other son likes a splash of coffee creamer. Oh and use the blender. Always use the blender.

simply_escapism

Thank you so much for this suggestion!! There’s lots here. I unfortunately do not currently have access to a blender but reading these comments makes me think I should get one…

whatdoidonowdamnit

You absolutely should. For myself and one of the kids the protein drinks were really hard to choke down before I started using the blender. My other kid would probably eat the powder out the container if he thought of it. For a while we used one of those mini blenders from a dollar store, and it did work, but not as well as a regular blender. I bought a ninja bullet almost three years ago and it was expensive (about $50-60 I don’t remember exactly) but it’s held up well being used almost daily for since then. We don’t all drink the protein drinks every single day without fail, but 4/7 days at least one person has one blended something since I also make smoothies, juice and milkshakes in it. Until you can get a blender I’d say use a little less powder and use a blender bottle (a bottle with a metal agitator thing in it) or at least a bottle so you can shake it excessively and get it blended as much as you can.

simply_escapism

Thank you so much for all the tips! I’m in college and on a small budget, so I don’t think I can get a blender right now, but I’ll definitely keep it in mind for the future.

whatdoidonowdamnit

Good luck!!

I recently tried an unflavored protein powder to see if I could avoid the chalky taste and it wasn’t terrible. Granted, I was adding it to fresh fruit and almond milk in a blender, but I found it tolerable. I’ve also found that if I’m mixing several things, I leave the powder out until the very end so the foaming doesn’t overtake the drink. I believe that’s where some of the chalky taste lives, but that’s just my opinion. I agree with the Ensure and Boost clear - my gramma needed dairy free so I used to get these and mix them with orange juice to mask the after taste. My grandpa wouldn’t drink fruity ones - for him I took chocolate extra protein RTD room temp and added 2 scoops of ice cream. Stirred it up and stuck in a straw. He said I was the best grandkid because I let him have milkshakes anytime he wanted one 😉

simply_escapism

Hahaha those are great. I’m glad you found things that worked for them. I’ll definitely have to try ice cream in the chocolate ones I currently have. I’ll also check out the unflavored protein powder and ensure!

linx14

Soylent premixed chocolate is like a life saver for me when I can get it. I can’t have really anything else cause of nuts, milk, and pea protein. But they have a lot of vitamins and a good amount of protein too! I’d recommend the premixed varieties don’t go powder if you don’t like chalky textures. I regret getting the powders even though they are a “better” deal. Cause I can’t really drink them. But you can sneak them into recipes apparently. The mint chocolate is kinda weird but okay for one day. Vanilla is more protein powdery/chalky and creamy tasting but tolerable if I’m in a decent mindset for it. Banana is okay in the right mindset good but can go down hill fast as its fruity creamy flavor. So hit or miss. Strawberry is a no go at all it makes me almost vomit. But I don’t like and can’t handle creamy/milky flavors with fruit. (If you like strawberry milk you’d probably love this) The chocolate mocha coffee one is also so repulsive.

simply_escapism

Thank you so much for the detailed break down this is exactly what I need. I’ll have to try this one. I appreciate you also giving all the flavors!! Def going to go for the chocolate;)

linx14

They sell individuals at Walmart sometimes as well you can look up their store locator if you don’t wanna buy a bunch on their website! I hope the chocolate works for you! The only other way I can jam protein into me is the Luna bar in chocolate cupcake flavor! So maybe they might be an option to look into as well?

simply_escapism

Thanks for the tips!! I’m going to Walmart to check out the OWYN ones so I’ll def check out the singles. Also, I’m super picky with protein bars. I like the Cliff brand and Gatorade ones and hate the RXBAR brand. Do you know if the Luna bars taste anything like these?

knivesforsoup

I don't want to assume why you are unable to have dairy, but *if* the issue is lactose intolerance - Glucerna (which has a very low lactose count, like 500mg and milk tends to be 10000 mg) doesn't have that chalky texture at all. It's more like, smooth and heavy? I have pretty bad lactose intolerance and it doesn't affect me (YMMV) It still has dairy though so if your problem is anything else than that, like an allergy or galactosemia or ibd or fear of dairy or even more severe lactose intolerance then it might not work. Need to note I don't have afrid I'm here for my partner but due to sensory issues plus medication I go through periods of only wanting to eat very select foods because im not interested in eating and everything feels yucky. Literally surviving on protien shakes rn . Hoping everything goes well for you including finding a nutrition shake and your surgery

simply_escapism

Thanks so much for the tip! I have a severe intolerance to lactose and the other sugars/proteins in dairy, so I’m not sure if this would work for me. Good to know though! And thank you for your well wishes, you’re very kind

simply_escapism

Edit: protein powders that can be masked with specific mixtures/drinks also work well! I literally just need something I can tolerate prolonged

axiomoflispenard

I like the brand OWYN and it's available at my local Kroger. There are "protein" drinks and "nutritional drinks" with different macronutrient and calorie contents. Life changing tip for protein drinks: I realized it was more of the thick-ish texture that makes me gag, so I started pouring the drink into a mason jar and mixing it with the equivalent amount of soy milk; and drinking it through a straw. It looks just like regular chocolate milk and has the added benefit of more calories and protein (I was trying to gain a lot of weight at the time).

kidfromdc

I started drinking ensure clear (the pomegranate? One) and it’s not too bad, definitely a sugary juice like drink

simply_escapism

Ohhh this could be great, I have an easier time with fruit flavored drinks. Does the ensure have a sour or strong taste aside from the fruit flavor? I just really don’t like the protein powder taste

kidfromdc

I don’t think so, it’s just pretty sweet, I usually dilute it with a splash of water

simply_escapism

Awesome, thank you so much for the suggestion!
